I met Donnell a bunch of times. He lived around the block from me in Manhattan. He used to come to the club i managed in 02-03. He met me outside with my girl at the studio and brought us in and sat us 3rd row and we watched both little john episodes of chappelles show live then he came out after and brought us backstage to meet dave. That was a great night.

The story was that they said his show was TOO successful and they “couldn’t” afford to pay him how much they actually owed him and they tried to renegotiate and lowball him for a fraction of it. Which just even reading it out-loud sounds CRAZY
True the original contract the percentage was to split revenue after comedy central recouped their investment. Which they did show grossed over 550M in DVD sales and advertisers fees. They owed dave over 200M they thought it was too much to give to a young black comic. So they said the gross revenue voided that contract. Tried to rewrite a new one that would give him 50M to continue the show. Straight disrespectful. Look up the Crain business article on it. Terrible business by the executives

Donnell been funny to me since I first saw him on the show, as a kid. He didn’t have to tell a joke, all he had to do was be there at the right time. That Wayne Brady scene is hands down one of his funniest moments.

I completely understand and respect Dave's decision to dip out. The clarity was made in both the oprah and Actors Studio interviews.

Stop the cap ,Donnell knows it was $450 million total and they offered $50 million. I wouldn't settle for $50 million neither, knowing I made more.
I would've took the 50 mil and told them to add the royalties on top. I know I can't expect half because I'm not footing the production costs, but I want to make sure I'll be able to make money off that show into perpetuity, as long as they run it. And that's the mistake that Dave Chappelle made... not going for the royalties.
Plus there was no ownership so no long term checks and they wanted creative power over the show and Dave didn’t want that. Donnell wouldn’t of been able to fire anybody bc he wouldn’t been in charge they offered 50 m to not be a boss
