    People don't understand what the hype was like walking into jam-packed, dark-lit arcade and seeing the crowd around this game. The sounds, the graphics, the music, and the fighters--it was like they discovered time travel and brought this back to prove it. Minds were shattered when someone performed a fireball.

    • @korbindallas8224

      Ikr. The smell of an arcade or bowling alley, hearing a bunch of coins fall through the change machine, and yeah the sounds and optics of the game were enchanting. I didn't even know how to do any of the special moves until I got it on console years later. THAT was surreal, bringing it home for the first time. And then when bosses became playable. Some of the best of all time gaming moments for sure.

      Aw man I was there. And your comment touched my heart. I always tell younger players today that I wish I could share with them what street fighter mania felt like before the internet. How guys would just huddle around magazines and scrutinize all the screenshots. When we first heard of DJ, Fei Long, Cammy, and T Hawk. Everything felt so high stakes.

    I would like to point out that "Balrog" is not a Spanish sounding word or name at all. "Vega" on the other hand is a very common surname used in Spain but also as the name of many towns and cities around the Spanish speaking world.
    "Las Vegas" being one of the most famous examples of it. which means "The Meadows".

    • @renslo689
      @renslo689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I always thought Vega sounded more Spanish, your description makes sense for him. Balrog is just a made-up name from Lord of the Rings, right?

    • @stephencook7337
      @stephencook7337 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks. I was under the impression that only I thought Balrog sounded nothing like a Spanish name…. Glad to know I’m not alone.
      On another note, I remember hearing that name (or a similar one) used as the name of the battleship in level 3 of Strider Hiryu.

    • @solenstyle
      @solenstyle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe he's from one of the regions of Spain, like say Catalonia (Barcelona) that has a different language than Spanish.

    • @juanausensi499
      @juanausensi499 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@solenstyle Nah, Balrog doesn't sound Spanish or anything like any language spoken in Spain.
      Vega is a legitimate Spanish surname, but i think the bullfighter being named Vega was by chance, and Capcom was thinking about the star Vega, not the surname Vega, because Vega was originally the 'dictator' fighter, who wasn't Spanish.

    Baz Knight from Shovel Knight is an intentional and direct reference to the Bullfighter design here; it was a meme on the old Fighterpedia/Two Best Friends channels that he was an uber-powerful fighter named Zubaz, and Matt and Woolie of said channels donated enough to Shovel Knight's development to be directors for a day, and were allowed to design and implement Zubaz as a boss.

    remember, Dudley was later added to the roster in SF3 as the 2nd boxer. and he is British. that luchador could have evolved into El Fuerte from SF4.

  • @TypeVertigo
    @TypeVertigo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    "Dick Jumpsey" may have led to Dudley, originally from Street Fighter 3. Jumpsey is a parody of Jack Dempsey, who is famous for the Dempsey Roll - a technique combining oblique punches for offense and very fast dodges for defense, and directly referenced by Dudley's Rolling Thunder super move. As an Ultra Combo in S/USF4, the Rolling Thunder's stylization of the Dempsey Roll even references its use in the famous boxing anime "Hajime no Ippo."

    It's good that Capcom replaced Anabebe with Blanka. Some might say that it would never have gone over in America...and that's certainly true today. Capcom definitely "future-proofed" the game. However, I actually admit that Kamala Harris (no, not that one...the original)...James "Kamala" Harris the wrestler was supposedly a "headhunter from Uganda" and was managed by a guy in a safari suit...AND he was one of my very favorite wrestlers back in the day!

    I used to think it was weird for a game called “The World Warriors”, Street Fighter 2 never included any characters from Australia or Africa, since a title like that would imply characters from around the world, or at least one from each continent. On Mike vs Balrog/M. Bison, they were never the same character. Just look at the earliest versions of each character’s story. Boxer was always a money-grubbing fool from his inception, Mike was always motivated to only make money to save his sisters life from a disease she had. Also Mike was a former champion, Boxer officially never reached that level. Though Mike killed someone in the ring it’s unlikely that it was intentional, while Boxer wouldn’t care if he did or not.

    Ryu: Masutatsu Ōyama
    Ken Masters: Joe Lewis but I’ve also heard Benny “The Jet” Urquidez who is a kickboxer (Ukidokan Kickboxing) and practitioner of Kenpo-Shotokan. Capcom Artist Akiman used Urquidez’s guest appearance in the manga “square jungle” as inspiration to draw Ken. (Both of these guys have also been rumored for the inspiration and design for SF1 character Joe)
    Chun-Li: Akiman, the artist who created Chun-Li says she was inspired by Tao from 1983 anime movie Harmagedon: Genma Wars. He also says that it’s a fair assessment to say that she was also inspired by Capcom character Tong Pooh from the original (‘89) Strider game. She had the look first. Whether he admits it or not, I think some inspo came from Star aka Lang from Yie-Ar Kung Fu in 1985 (and Fan for some of her kicks). To attach a real person, I think martial arts movie star Angela Mao probably inspired the inspiration imo. She played a character named Tien Li-Chun in the 1975 movie Lady Whirlwind. (In the Art of Street Fighter interview, Nishitani [lead designer for SF2] says there was a real-life inspiration for Chun-Li’s name, but he does not name that specific person. “I was flipping through a Chinese martial arts magazine when I saw a person with a similar name. It was Chinese, and I had no idea how it was supposed to be pronounced, so I just guessed it to be “Chun-Li.” Then we simply picked out nice-looking kanji that would phonetically fit that name.”)
    Guile: no real people but Jean-Pierre Polnareff with Stroheim’s Hair and military background (just American and not Nazi) from Jojo’s bizarre adventure. Schilke Müller that evolved into Guile looks to be based after Narumi from the manga Riki-Oh (‘88) he’s basically that character with black hair and a big Yakuza tattoo. (In the OVA they made him look like younger Toguro)
    (JP) M.Bison
    (US) Balrog: “Iron” Mike Tyson former undisputed heavyweight champion. Baddest man on the planet. Really popular throughout the 80’s and I believe he was making a comeback around this time.
    (JP) Balrog
    (US) Vega: no irl references i could find. Was originally a fully armored knight but got reworked into an updated Geki from SF1. Possibly a reference to DIO from Jojo’s bizarre adventure. I may be reaching but they share similar mask poses. The main inspiration is the nameless Asura from Fist Of The North Star (known to fans as sand spider). Same haircut, mask, ninja techniques, throwing stars, and even at one point holds his throwing knives between his fingers and they look like claws (but he throws them).
    (JP) Vega
    (US) M.Bison: Yasunori Kato from the novel Teito Monogatari (‘85) where you can see some artwork on the covers, but the live-action movie adaptation (Doomed Megalopolis) in ‘91 really gives you the dictator aesthetic. Also Capcom literally copying/tracing of General Washizaki from panels of the Manga/Anime Riki-Oh.
    Cammy: no irl references, but Misty the assassin from the manga/anime wounded man. Gauntlets are ripped from anime/manga appleseed, and the main character is also a militaristic blonde, albiet with short hair. Most, if not all of her moves are from Gunm aka Battle Angle Alita. Maybe a little reference to hello Kitty. (btw, her best skin is the shadaloo version from SF4.)
    Dee Jay: Billy Blanks. More specifically from his role The King of Kickboxers (‘90)
    E.Honda: no irl inspirations outside of sumo guy. His trademark Kumadori style face paint is used in Kabuki theater. Specifically the play Shibaraku.
    Sagat: Sagat Petchyindee even tho he’s like 2feet shorter. He was famous in Japan while fighting there and the only person named Sagat. After a long losing streak he thought he was cursed. He consulted some monks and worked on his technique and came back with a new move that helped him regain his championship belt and throne as king of Muay Thai….An uppercut!
    T.Hawk: well his original name was Geronimo, so that might be it. I couldn’t really find anything on him outside of an alternate design with a Mohawk.
    Fei Long: Jackie Chan. Duh!
    Blanka: was generic beast man with electricity powers they put it together and it actually stuck . The Adebebe character that he was before and his handler might be might be a reference to the wrestler Kamala and his handler. The handler, in this case, is speculated to be a bullfighter dressed similarly to The Road Warriors of pro-wrestling fame. The Zubaz shirt he’s wearing is an American apparel brand that was marketed as comfortable shorts for weight lighting. The Road Warriors helped popularize the brand in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Woolie and Matt McMuscles, formerly of the Canadian-based Super Best Friends YT Chanel have deified the character, but (maybe purposely) mistook the Zubaz logo on the shirt as the character’s name. So Zubaz or colloquially referred to as just “The Baz” Is absolutely a reference to the character here. He’s been a guest in Dive Kick, Shovel Knight, Kaiju Combat, Indivisible, Slipstream, The Takeover, Petal Crash, Devil Engine and maybe some others.
    Dhalsim: Lead designer of Street Fighter II, Akira Nishitani, stated in an interview that the concept of Dhalsim's ability to stretch his limbs comes from the "Zoom Punch" technique shown by Will Anthonio Zeppeli in the manga/anime JJBA. There is also reference to Yogi Tro Le Soung from 1976’s Master of The Flying Guillotine.
    Zangief: Pro wrestler Victor Zangiev. Goda “The Bear Man” in fist of the North Star (who also inspired Uighur in FOTNS who remind me of Odin ), and a rumored Mr.T inspiration.

    • @KenMasters.
      @KenMasters. ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also about T. Hawk:
      As "Geronimo", he looked kinda similar to Elvis Presley in the concept art. They dropped the stereotypical look to make him bare more of a resemblance to Chief Bromden from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest because they are fans of the book and film, it makes sense because they're both tall, strong, and long-haired.
      In Street Fighter: The Ultimate Battle (1994), they depicted T. Hawk as a Rambo-knockoff.

    One of Vega/Balrog/Claw's early designs was that of a knight with a sword, which later developed into a claw which I imagine got merged with the bullfighter.
    The interesting thing about that abandoned design is that it was used as a jumping off point to develop another Capcom game, Knights of the Round.

    No way Mike and M. Bison aka Mike Bison aka Balrog have nothing to do with each other and are completely different and serperate characters in the SF universe. Capcom can say that until they're blue in the face but its extremely obvious that Balrog was either heavily inspired by Mike or is literally just him.

    There’s some final looking concept art of Balrog out there, from back in the day, with ‘BISON’ clearly emblazoned on his embossed belt buckle. And M. Bison’s orig name ‘Vega’ was, as I understand it, after the star of Vega which is a reference to Yasunori Kato, whos occult powers are drawn from said star and his occult star branded gloves. Also I remember a weird regional version of sf2 from childhood in which Blanka was named Jimmy throughout... Dick Jumpsey 😂

    No. Clearly you need to watch Woolie Madden and Matt McMuscles' old Fighterpedia videos and realize that 'The Baz' as he appears in Dive Kick and Shovel Knight is based on that running gag, which started in a video that is SUSPICIOUSLY SIMILAR to the one you put out here, Top Hat.

    These rejected street fighters should've been rewritten and put into SFII's roster making 20 instead of 12.
    · Masaaki Kakuda would be Retsu's son who is more vengeful and violent, and based on Takuma "Terry" Tsurugi from The Street Fighter (1974).
    · Zhi Li would be Chun Li's cop-partner and only thinks Gen was killed but turns out that he survived as seen on the bottom left-hand corner of 8:04.
    · Tahir Meyer would have beef with Zangief in the ring, where it's an Israeli VS Soviet wrestling civil-war rivalry between them.
    · Shilke Muller would be Major Guile's greatest Air Force lieutenant and arch-rival after the murder of Charlie Nash six years prior, in which Guile causes beef with this former green-beret for turning down Shilke's war-hungry offer of being his soldier and bodyguard due to his grievance and willing to handle his own revenge.
    · Dick Jumpsey's story would also involve him being the reason why Balrog was banned from boxing, by surviving a headbutt to the skull. His personal boxing trainer is my own dad Dalton Masters.
    · Great Tiger would be an Arab Sorcerer and Martial Artist who fights under the style of Zanzouken, can double jump, and is the only SFII character who can deflect projectiles. His story is that he is at a war-versus-piece civil war with Dhalsim, believing that his country failed him and is trying to take over India and avenge it by putting an end to Shadaloo.

      These rejected street fighters should've been rewritten and put into SFII's roster making 20 instead of 12.
      · Masaaki Kakuda would be Retsu's son who is more vengeful and violent, after losing a fight with Louis the "lard boy" over the last Cinnabon! Kakuda is going after Louis once he improves his skills against everyone in the tournament.
      · Zhi Li would hold a grudge against Chun-Li for all her farting and
      Star-Leaf-Ulysses-Tamer-Instinct-Nome-Gander
      due to Zhi being a modest
      Baby-Indoor-Tennis-Cake-Hollow!
      · Tahir Meyer would have beef with Larry Kruteck. The latter being a member of the Mad Gear gang, and husband of a pop princess.
      · Shilke Muller would be a Mega Man robot hater, traveling the world trying to destroy each one. Entering a fighting tournament is a great way to travel the world so he can junk them in-between bouts with the Street Fighters.
      · Richard Jumpsey's story would involve REVENGE against Ms. Frizzle for being an irresponsible school teacher who's most recent "field trip" resulted in the death of his son!
      · Great Tiger would be an Arab Sorcerer and Martial Artist who fights under the style of Zanzouken, can double jump, and is the only SFII character who can deflect projectiles. His story is that he hates EVERYBODY in the tournament! That's all you need to know.
      *Fixed.*

    Hey Buddy around 4:00 you mention M. Bison and Balrog....Actually Capcom states that M. Bison was the Boxer and Balrog was the Final Boss Military Guy and the ONLY reason they switched them is FOR THE American versions......To sound more American, I am pretty sure if you look into ACTUAL SF2 Games in Japan at that time they should have Produced some SF2 games with the Original names....
