Maybe you are a zen rabbit and will batter that lion with your sailing super-powers. All those areas are only bad if you get the weather or tide wrong, but they are certainly spots to keep an eye on if you are near them.
Hi Gaynor, Bev n Salty Lass, ur both looking well, that intro looked like a great commercial for holidaying, just can't wait to get there Not. The music was good too. Sorry didn't comment last week was quite unwell. The information ur both giving is very sound and easy to understand for the sailors around there, so forewarned is forearmed as they say. Hope ur both ok were having torrential rain at the moment it's great but then it turns to floods so not good, were sweet as I built on high ground. Have just about got everything to start building the 6m x 2.5m cabin on the 9m houseboat so getting very excited. Any who be safe be happy love u both Aussie Girl ⛵⚓☸🇦🇺😃💖♀️🐘🐧🐉🌞🌈 where is my T Shirt ??????
I hope you are feeling better and that torrential must be the stuff we had here a few days ago ... 😄😄 The T-shirts will happen, but boat stuff has to happen first.
hahaha, i love the honesty of your mishaps and fears it makes for light hearted easy viewing. And of course it's all educational stuff :-) . I guess you're enjoying yourselves despite the challenges
Fabulous girls. The ones I identify most with are Rathlin to Torr Head ( which thankfully I had Chris Tweed on board for!)....and Strangford Bar, which still makes me nervous as I am never sure what time to go through it. You further complicated it by telling me there are lines to follow which are not easily seen. (I have only ever come out of Strangford Lough...never in). The only one I am not familiar with is Dubh Mor.
The next time you are down this way we will show you the pilotage for the Narrows. As for Dorus Mor and the Sound of Luing, timing and weather are everything.
Want to know a secret. Was my first time around Fairhead as well but had taken heed of Pilot Notes and Tidal Flows as well as advice from a very experienced Lady sailor. Was an interesting sail between Larne and Glenarm .You appeared to be looking for the big waves to bash through. 😊
In reference to your RNLI praise, we don't have anything like that here in the States, for a couple of reasons I can think of, but I enthusiastically applaud all of the RNLI volunteers and supporters. The more I learn about them the more they impress me. The first reference to them I saw was on the Old Sea Dog channel where I wondered what he was talking about. You two do a great job of telling us who they are and what they do. Two primary reasons I think of why we don't have an equivalent are: 1. our coastal waters are no where near as tricky as the UK's with only a few localized locations I can think of, and 2. the US's lawsuit happy culture would make a voluntary group like that non-viable because of potential liability - they would need more lawyers than volunteers, sadly.
We supported them before we went to sea. Since we started cruising and sailing full time, we became even more enthusiastic. As well as the money we raised for them, we make a monthly donation direct from our bank account and, like many UK sailors, we attend fund raising events and donate there too. Some people with connections to the sea leave their entire estates or monetary legacy to the RNLI. Perhaps another factor is that the UK & Ireland are islands in a hostile sea area with bad weather. Even the shipping forecast (broadcast on Radio 4) is a national institution. It even has its own theme tune "Sailing By" and non sailors do listen to it (Skip about 2½ minutes to skip "Sailing By") th-cam.com/video/cT229KbRA-o/w-d-xo.html And a parody version.... th-cam.com/video/PXjwWAGAf70/w-d-xo.html
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass Just did really good, polypropylene is a good rope as fishermen use it all the time, has many advantages over other types of rope, though it needs splices either hard eyed or soft . Bit late in the day to worry about such folly now though. It’s always interesting to see the camera footage on a good days sail but no footage when the proverbial is hitting the fan; simply because it’s all hands on at them times. Camera footage can wait in my opinion, just get that boat moored up somewhere safe and do after film which is fine anytime. Great vid again.👍🏻
These days we have more cameras and two of them are fully weatherproofed and can be left mounted in any weather so maybe we can get more footage than previously. Also three years on the boat makes a huge difference. If we were doing that sail over again, the outcome would be very different. Sadly however, the only way to get more experience is to make mistakes and learn.....
I was in Port Patrick in summer just past there.. was on a motorbike tour... but my mate took his 6m rib from Bangor to Port Patrick to meet us... his buddy was in a sail boat... we did wonder why the sail boat wasnt sailing directly into port... I assume this was similar a reason to as in the video.. :)
@@hideawaysailing9078 - It was the best feeling ever! We actually had a BOAT!! Would the cops turn up and arrest us? Having this much fun could not be legal surely...... 😆😆
It had to be. People scared us half to death with sea-stories of the Narrows. It used to be that when we were passing them out at sea, we made sure we detoured all the way out to the Fairway Buoy in case we got sucked in.....
Thanks for the tips! We hope to get there one day. Lots of crazy currents and channels around vancouver island where we are too, but I think timing intervals and distances of current areas are different.
Look, if you are going to end with "See you" you'll have to start with "Hi guys" :-D That was really useful - actually, both these videos have been. Whilst my plan A is to head south and west this summer, if it all goes Pete Tong again my plan B is a UK circumnavigation.
If we do the "Hi Guys" intro, you only have yourself blame... from Bev's poing of view, "Hi guys" is a lot drier 😄 The circumnavigation sounds like a good idea. We might wind up doing something similar. Glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks for the kind words 👍
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass Haha, I think Madds may have that copyrighted ;-) I'm really hoping for plan A. Next "winter" in the Caribbean sounds really appealing at the moment!

Just love the intro🤣🤣It really helps 😂😂 now I’m calm as a rabbit in a lion’s cage.

Loving watching you both on your videos. As a novice sailor, I've learned a lot from you. Whether I'll remember any of it is a different thing! 🤣🤣
I am sure that once you start doing it, it will stick in memory just fine 👍 Thanks for watching and commenting.
Top-class info, thank you. You are now officially in the category of "local knowledge" :)
Wow, thanks! High praise 👍👍 But there is still a lot to cover......

Ar-harrr! Salty stuff 😄
Loved this. I'm down in Cornwall, but would like to spend some time up your way.
Oddly enough, we would like to spend some time down your way in case it is warmer.... 😃
YOU ARE HAVING FUN. welcome to my share. . i just puddle around off shore, nice days, and pretend i am a sailor.
Just puddling around is great fun! In fact, just sitting on a boat on a sunny day is fantastic. Enjoy your boat 👍

Day one on Salty Lass? Take a good look at that dinghy. It was only with us for one journey......

From what we have seen of Vancouver and Puget Sound, the conditions look very similar. I suspect that in either case, a good pilot guide is useful
