  • Hi folks, Part of the things NUX sent me over was their Mighty Plug Pro and I wanted to see if the much newer and slightly more expensive Katana version was better - I had NO prior experience with either of these and wanted to give a very real world demo of what its like with each as you get it. Both units were recorded directly from their headphone outs as thats what you'll hear when using it. Let me know your thoughts!

    I own both of these and there are pluses and minuses to both.None the less either one is excellent for the money. I have used the Kitana Live through a Headrush FR-108 and it blew the doors off my Spark Go going through the same FR-108. I have yet to try the Nux through the live set-up so for now I can only comment on the Headphone sound. I feel the NUX has a more full bodied tone than the Kitana. However, the Kitana cleans up more like a real amp when you roll your guitar volume back which most units of this nature do not do that well. Another plus for the Kitana is the large volume knob.The Kitana options on the amp selection is much slimmer on the choices than the Nux but I can see the value in keeping the options to more of a minimum for people that get too over whelmed with a lot of choices. If you are very picky then the Nux has the edge with the IR capabilities. Both are easy to dial in and the Nux lets you load your won IR's while the Kitana does not. Both apps are fine but I think the Kitana is laid out just a little better but not by much. In Conclusion the Nux has a bigger sound to my ears but maybe not everyone likes that. I also had a Nux MG-30 but lo and behold the tone engine is different and the Mighty Plug Pro just sounds better then the Nux full blown MG-30. That is a mystery to me...hope this helps....

    Great video I will say I've got one and if you do spend the time and find your own tone and use some good headphones you can get lost in it but you do have to spend some time tweaking but once you have your sound and saved then the next times you just pick up and play 😊

    Count me in fella I personally like these devices for the fact of the lack of a guitar cable anything that allows less clutter and more freedom to move around is a plus but I can se your point if you have to spend time trying to get a basic tone your happy with. I'm guessing you can save your settings though on the apps 👍

    I'll say as someone whom owns both devices, as soon as I tried the default presets on the Katana Go I threw the NUX in a box and left it there collecting dust. Which is sad because I toyed with the latter for a year and a half, spending a LOT of time and effort to dial in my custom tones. Getting the IRs to emulate the sound of my favourite bands actually cost me money and it wasn't cheap either, like, you want to sound like iron maiden? Cool, here's two presets, that will be 20 dollars. Even then, the end result was barely acceptable. Might just be my experience, but I'm sharing it for anyone trying to decide which one to get.

    Count me out Paul. One, because I live in New Zealand, and two, I’ve already got a Nux Mighty Plug Pro. It’s a great bit of kit, and if you download the third party Mightier Amp software it’s even better than the Nux software. The Boss looks cool but not enough to warrant buying this if you’ve already got a Nux. Good luck mate and thanks for the honesty.

    I bought a NUX MP-3 a few months ago. It's pretty good as long as you have quality headphones. In my case I was tired of being tethered to a computer. I plug into the interface and then the interface is plugged in to the computer, and by the time you introduce headphones into the mix, you got cords everywhere. If you to stop playing for a second to get a drink of water or go to the restroom or whatever, it's a real hassle navigating all those cords. With the NUX I'm free to play standing and walking around the house; I move freely and play in the living room, the bedroom, wherever. What's more, it connects to my laptop, tablet, and phone seamlessly, so I can practice for a couple hours while listening to podcasts and audio books as well. All this results in my playing a lot more than I otherwise would. Now, I wouldn't use it to record or play live, but you absolutely could. It doubles as an interface. In fact, it's made for live streaming. But I just use it for practicing around the house and it's pretty awesome for that for me. I just wish the battery would last longer. I always have to remember to put it on the charger. But you can use it plugged in to the charger as well if you have to. I don't like doing that at all as you can well imagine, but if I get into one of my 4-5 hour practice session I don't see any harm in plugging it in and letting it recharge if I'm sitting at the charging station anyway.

    Hey man, these things can be great for running around on when travelling or before a show. I used to use a pocket pod (remember that) years ago for that reason - these are both way better than that. Boss do a GT pocket which is also a contender and has TH-cam linking (like a spark amp). I reckon the Boss may last longer with the slower charge time 🤔.
    Sure, count me in. I'd use that as a travel amp. ✌️

    I can treat my NuX MPP as common audio interface so disable all effect chain and use VSTs for amp sim and FX exclusively. Could I do this also with Katana Go? So set all effects including amp/eq to off and listen just 100% wet signal from DAW on headphones plugged into Katana?

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I guess this would work, you would just set the input of the channel on the daw to whatever the headphone amp is plugged into. although, id always just use an interface

    I have the NUX and I find it great for travelling as my work requires me to travel constantly, I have a headless travel guitar so the NUX is great for this but I´m interested on the Katana as for the videos I've seen it seems it sounds better but it seems it can't load IR's or reorder the FX blocks

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The nux is far more flexible and tweak-able. The katana is far easier to get a good sound is my experience with them. If you have the nux i wouldn’t get the katana assuming you’ve already dialled in what you like

    Ok here's the situation.
    Im a rhythm guitarist, very very little bit solo or leads and even if i do it will be on the fat strings....im not too much of a guitar aficionado...no great technical prowess....i have an sg guitar
    Im looking for a plug and Play that can jusy statt roght off and play at home and small cafes.......maybe in the fiture i would conssider tweaking presets in detail but for now just want to plug and start riffing, somewhat an instant gratification kind.....
    Which of these would you recommend i consider

    • @Paul-D

      The katana go is easier to get instant gratification but there is way more tweak ability on the NUX.

    I would not buy it because I just don't like the digital sound. Ive tried a Katana, Line 6 Catalyst and Fender Mustang. I don't need hundreds of sounds. I am far from being a amp snob but to my ears you can't beat the warmth of a small tube amp and some reverb. You want some dirt then adjust the gain. Oh yeah I forgot about the Spark. Not saying they are bad but not a good fit for me. Nice video.

    I SOOOOOO hate phones as well, they are a monumental waste of time and money which could be better spent finding cures for every disease known to man, especially aging.
    Sorry for the rant!
    You are right about the sound differences, (I own both and many, many more...yikes) the Katana has an easier app to get through and the sounds I get seem to be better than the nux. However the NUX is made of metal and has the ability to play with it via built in backing tracks which can be looped so you don't have to use the damn phone! The BOSS in contrast is just cheap plastic and you have to spend some time downloading backing tracks...ugh.
    I also feel that the price of the Katana should be around $50.00 cheaper than the current price of $119.00, which seems to be what major manufacturing companies have all agreed to.
    I live in a houseful of people so the amp thing is out...these are my only options. Sound wise, it's the Katana hands down. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.

    When comparing these devices you must IMHO consider also the ready made patches at BOSS Tone Exchange as well as your own patches if you happen to own a Katana amp. I have and this fact is the biggest pöus for the KATANA:GO - I get to play with the same sounds I have on rehersals and gogs with the real amp. Pauly didn't adress these facts at all, which I think is a great omitment.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was an intentional omission but yeh your right thats a huge plus. The point of this video is for people who are totally new to each as i was - and what does it sound like soon as you get it before you deep dive, patch share etc etc.

    I can speak to the Katana and you barely scratched the surface of the thing. Both it's onboard capabilities and uses as an audio interface via USB/DAW. I assume the same for the NUX.
    Since we're being brutally honest, why did you bother with this 'shootout' of products you dislike, don't use and could barely adequately review? 🤷‍♂

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because not everyone gets things and uses every inch of what it can do. Some people just want to see how things sound and work with minimal messing about - and those people will relate to this. Theres always plenty of choice of videos and channels that people relate too. You just dont relate here and thats fine 👍
