    Mine was built in 1968. My dad bought it new and used it everywhere; Ireland, Accra-Ghana, Singapore, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Jahire Bahru, Brunei, Hong Kong, etc. It STILL works and I put at least 4 rolls thru it every year. I use a Weston Master V lightmeter. And yes I used to dev & print, myself (don't miss smelling of 'fixer' on a Saturday eve!).

    Dig the video, but the M6 was not the first Leica with a meter. The M5 was, and it is a beautiful beast of an under appreciated camera.

    • @pushingfilm
      @pushingfilm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IDREAMINSURFGREEN yes! Thanks for the correction, completely forgot about the M5 (and CLE?) it is apparently quite under appreciated... Only handled an M5 once, and it felt quite different to the other M's

    • @15buggie
      @15buggie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had an M5. Gorgeous camera indeed and very underrated. Actually the most quiet M as well. Such a silky smooth advance.

    • @heresmyurl
      @heresmyurl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, but CL and then the CLE does not fall under the umbrella of M cameras, so you were right in leaving it out. The m5 is the redhead of the family. Some people love them, some people hate them, but they are definitely part of the family.

      I dont know, my M2 is a late 69 and has bright viewfinder, but the differences between the two are serious minimal at best. Both are incredible, especially when you go with the all brass M4. Anyways, enough geeking out, lets get out and shoot 👊😅

    Such a pleasure to see a new video about M4, you can't event find that much of people talking about this lovely machine! I got it last year and done like 400 rolls already with a Summicron 35/2 v1 and 50/2 v4. The only problem I hate about is the finder without a correction lens``` It destroyed my last glasses··· OTL

    Hey man, your video appeared in my feed. Fantastic review and an excellent video. I loved the mixture of POV and behind the scenes footage. I lusted after an M3 for years but ended up with a lovely M4 with a Ziess Biogon f2 about six months ago. I think it’s a fantastic camera but I really want to try out the M2 because I like the look of the Knurled rewind knob and metal advance lever. I am also saving for an M6 as sometimes I simply want the inbuilt meter. Thanks for sharing, I just subscribed. Enjoy Japan, it looks amazing.

      Pushing Film considering I don’t have another lens to compare it to and it’s my first Leica it’s hard to say. I need to work on my development process as some shots are bad ha ha. Matt Day gave a good review on it and I read a lot of great reviews. From what I can tell it is a very nice lens. It doesn’t come with a lens hood but I purchased a 3D printed rectangular hood which looks pretty cool and does a good job at protecting the lens.

    • @pushingfilm
      @pushingfilm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Falkous I see! Yeah I like Matt Days review, and am thinking it would be a good lens to get as a better value option compared to summicron

    The Leica M5 was the first to add a light meter and’s the best Leica M together with the M3. Street photography and general purpose photography isn’t something that just became popular these days that’s literally what the M system was built for.

      Hey! That's great, gotta love the M3. I don't, sorry! It was high on my list some time ago, but I progressively found that there were many great videos out there already showing the process. I could still do one down the track through, showing my method (its quite standard though)

    I love my M4. Paired with a 35mm lens (in my case, the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 35mm f2.5), it's my favourite camera and the one I use almost daily. However, after having used both the M4 and an M3 (which I also own) for a number of years, I have to say that I prefer the M3's loading system to the M4's 'quick load' system: with the M4, it's much easier to misload a roll of film by mistake and replace the bottom plate without realising that the film hasn't been engaged by the sprockets and delivered onto the takeup spool. That happened to me once or twice when I first got the camera and I watch out for it every time I load it now; on the other hand, I've never misloaded my M3.
    But on balance, then M4 is my favourite Leica M camera.

    • @pushingfilm
      @pushingfilm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Lewis Nice! How do you like the 35mm skopar? As for the loading issue, I have a habit of visually confirming that the rewind knob rotates with the film advance with any manual film camera, so this wouldn't be a problem personally. It would be nice having both though!

    • @paull3466
      @paull3466 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After making those couple of misloads when I first got the camera, I now always check that the rewind knob on my M4 rotates with the film advance: the reason I didn't do that when I first got the camera was because I had been so use to the M3, which is near-impossible to misload (as you have to physically insert the leader into the takeup spool) that I had become complacent/lazy :)
      The 35mm Color-Skopar is a great little lens and quite affordable too (for an M mount lens, that is). I've been using it for years now and I can't praise it enough.

    • @dantecoco9528
      @dantecoco9528 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well you can 100% make sure the film will be loaded correctly by simply align the edge of film to the button silver line (no idea what call), I made those loading mistakes too when I got my M4 for the first couple months. it won't loaded correctly because the rewind knob did not set to a proper angle... Once you get familiar with that you won't make any misleads ever again```; )

    • @jqueryrocks
      @jqueryrocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Lewis I've read some reviews that the aperture ring on the 35mm skopar is very loose and may accidentally change when you focus, can you confirm this? thx

    • @paull3466
      @paull3466 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jqueryrocks Due to the compact size of the lens, I guess it's possible to hit the aperture ring accidentally when you focus it but I've never had that problem personally. I wouldn't call it loose exactly, but it's certainly not stiff.
      On the other hand, I spent a number of years shooting with the click-less Jupiter 8 (on a Zorki, then a Bessa-R) which, I always felt, does have a 'problem' in terms of the possibility of changing aperture accidentally whilst focusing.

    Nice review, I was stuck trying to choose between the M2 and M4 when I decided to take the plunge and buy a Leica. I ended up with an M2 because the right camera came up for sale with a recent CLA at a good price. I don't regret it. The difference in loading is a non issue (still really easy to load and pretty much impossible to get wrong) as is the knurled rewind knob.
    For what it's worth I'd say don't worry too much about finding one in such nice condition. I think that a Leica looks good with a little wear and tear (not abuse) and brassing is a sign that it has been well loved and used for what it was intended for. The money saved by not buying mint can pay for a CLA so that it is good to go for another however many years.

    • @pushingfilm
      @pushingfilm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mathew Chatterton Hey, you're absolutely right on both fronts, wouldn't knock back an M2 either! And indeed a body with a bit of wear and tear but a CLA is the best option for someone who plans to really use it

    Really honest opinions about leica which I totally agree with. I love my MP (0.58x) a lot and I peronally thinks its the best of all the M's. Don't settle for Bessa, Canon or Nikon rangefinder copies. They may be rangefinders too but leica is the legit one to get. As for glass, get leica glass! not zeiss. You spent money to get Leica camera use Leica glass. Older glass is great and lower in contrast but buy from reputable dealers (in Japan). New glass is contrasty with better coatings - mainly for newer digital M's. Leica is the shiz-nit. I use to talk trash about Leica geeks, until I tried one then I bought one asap.

    Yeah, well, that Summaron 35mm lens is OK, but don't get the sun (or any light source) anywhere near the front of the lens. It's really a 1940s-50s lens. The later Summicron is lightyears better.
    Lenshoods are necessary in any case.
