Another golden baby. Love that you guys are finding your own rhythm in these films too. It doesn't feel like you're following any American / 'TH-camr' styles and taking your time with the material. More now, plz.
All the videos on your channel are pure gold for filmmakers ! I cannot thank you enough for all the practical knowledge you are sharing ! I have personally waited for this video for quite a while as i am planning to setup a practical truck explosion for my next short film. And while looking at this, i thought it might be very interesting for further pyro videos to explain which kind of building materials you should use to maximize the "explosive" and scattering potential of the miniatures (like : plastic will break or melt instead of distort, polystyrene will explode in tiny pieces, metal might be too thick to let the explosion pop out, etc.). But maybe all of this is already planned within your TIE Fighter upcoming video... who knows ? 😀😎💥
Loved this so much that I’m watching it for the 7th time. I’m thinking of getting a license in pyrotechnics. Btw, Brian Johnson is the spfx artists responsible for the zero g explosion technique. Lucas and a friend were hanging around Bray Studio where Johnson filmed the spfx for space 1999. Lucas originally wanted BJ to be the spfx director for Star Wars, but Brian had just signed on for the second season of Space. As a matter of fact, the very first iteration of the Millennium Falcon was based on the Eagle transporter from S1999. Lucas trashed it when he saw it resembled the Eagle.
Great video talking about the history of the effects and showing some examples but really would have liked a more in depth talk of specific materials where I can get them and cost. Also how to do this at home on your own sets or on your own miniatures
Good question. It often comes down to testing and experience…after a couple of test charges we honed the exposure closer to where it should be but generally we would get it dialled in very quickly. After you get used to filming fire and explosions, it becomes much easier to estimate how much headroom in exposure to allow. It’s always safer to slightly underexposed to maintain highlight details - as once those clip beyond the dynamic range of your camera, you can never recover them. If memory serves me correctly the settings we used for these smaller charges were around 120fps @ F8 with iso around 800 and shutter at 1/60-1/200. - JP
Hell!!! InCamera SFX monsters!!! 🤣 That shockwave in de “remaster” didn’t make any bloody sense. For sound and shockwaves (low frequency sound) you need this thing that’s very much absent in deep space. Called an atmosphere 😜
Another great video as always, here's a question for you are you guys selling that footage? I would love to use some of your explosions in some of my stuff
i wondered if you ever considered doing what Joe Viscosil did for Star Wars and shooting striaght up below the hung charge with a sheet of perspex between for that zero-g effect?
With good reason I'm afraid. We're here to demonstrate filmmaking technique. Our feeling is that we should not be handing out info on how to make pyrotechnic charges as they can be misused. For those who want to learn there are plenty of resources out there if you're willing to put the time in to find them. Making these things too easy can lead to folks just doing it for a laugh or not understanding the very real dangers, and potentially injuring themselves and others.
Next time camera on the floor facing up (shooting through a 45 degree safety glass)? Or sideways into a large front silvered mirror at 45 degrees to get the same effect?
How did you guys find the right exposure for the explosions? Did you have some test explosions just for the exposure? I guess a camera with a lot DR helps, but when you blow up the White House miniature like they did for Independence Day, you only have one shot, so how do you know that?
I want to ask you what technique to use. probably the same one used by rodeo fx. can you also make other effects besides explosions or particle effects
What ISO and Aperture do you typically recommend shooting at with these types of shots. I’d be using a Canon C70 which uses the same sensor as the C300 shooting at 4K 120fps. Also... 180 degree shutter? Or do you want a faster shutter to capture all the motion with less motion blur?
They should have shot some explosions from underneath. Or had a camera for such an angle. Creating of course Zero -G explisions as it would appear in space etc.. Still enjoyed it very much.
We do plan on making our elements available to license in the near future. We're also going to make them available on our Patreon, when we get that sorted!
Guys...please please do the take down of the '89 Batwing from the Batman movie...features miniatures and pyros in one perspective! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASE?
Always thought the ring shock wave effect in a new hope looked daft. Shock wave rings only make sense when the explosion is happening along the ground. This effect makes no sense in space where the explosion would be distributed evenly from the center.

Stoked to have you with us guys!
@@InCameraTV Ha! Been here since the trailer for the fist video! :D
Nice! Well ya know, if you haven't ceremonially destroyed those lovely miniature buildings maybe we could help with an explosive alternate ending 😉💣💥
@@InCameraTV hahaha! I doubt our cardboard miniatures would survive the trip to UK! Very glad to hear you saw our work! ;)
@@sliceoflifefilm of course! Gorgeous work 👊
That projectile coming down at 18:10 is straight movie material. Loved this episode!
A healthy disdain for the portrait mode. I love it.
In my opinion Derek Meddings was the Maestro of miniatures and explosions.
One of the hidden gems here on filmmaking TH-cam. Way too underrated.
*The Pokemon Moltres cameo made with real fire was epic.* ✨🏆
Great channel. I'd love to see some compressed air explosions, more of a dusty, dirt and flying debri look without fireballs.
So would we! It's on the list 😉
@@InCameraTV it's been 10 months...
Explosions and disdain for Lucas' butchery of the original trilogy.. I love this channel!
I learn something new with every video! Never realised how they created the practical explosions, amazing stuff again team, bravo 👏👏👏
So beautiful!!! Real is real !! I love using footage rather than CG
Please please please never stop, absolutely ADORE this channel 😍
Awesome ep! Explosion at 18:38 was a particular favourite...
We think Michael Bay would be proud of that one!

Thank you for speaking up about the ring shockwave in the new edition!
Can't wait for this channel to hit the 1M mark!
This looked like a fun day! great footage. Sterling work guys, really liking the channel.
Just finished binging all of your videos so far, keep up the great work! Psyched to see what you do next.

The zero-gee bang where the camera looks up at the pyro was first used to great effect in Gerry Andersons Space 1999 in 1973, not Star Wars..
