    I love the old school techniques but its so easy to do this kind of thing in CG now. Even with CG it still needs cinematic knowledge to make these shots work.

    • @SmallerLives
      @SmallerLives 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people on channels with similar themes to this one talk about CG as though we're still living in 1986. CG is absolutely PHENOMENAL at so many things that practical effects cannot possibly hope to recreate. To say that practical is 'so much better than CG' is just rubbish. Yes, practical is much, much better than terrible CG, but that goes both ways. The guys from InCamera have spoken very positively about CG in some of their other videos so this comment is not intended as a dig at them in any way!! Practical is obviously a big thing for them, but they are certainly living in the 21st Century :-) And yes, you still need to have a bit of a brain on you to make this stuff work, CG or not.

    I did a similar effect. I took a $7 kids swimming pool, filled it with water, placed dollar store black foam board half way around and then shot the entire pool full of spray fog. Then I pulled a weathered model boat across the pool via fishing line. The effect was pretty cool. Smoke definitely does make the difference. I may have to try some of these techniques. Fantastic video!

    This technique goes back as far as the 1940s. They used this Dry for Wet technique at ILM on THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990) in fact. Only difference is the miniature was twenty feet (20 ft.) long. Bigger the better for believability. Oftentimes 1/6 scale. And photography would often be filmed "Overcranked" at speeds of 240 frames per second and higher even to give the illusion of massive hull of a submarine in the ocean. Basically sell the shot or what we call in the business a "Suspension of Disbelief".

    Have you guys tried something like Film Convert to add a little bit of a softer film look to your shots? They're very good as they are, but maybe it would bring out a little bit more of that realistic light rollof, that's inherent to filming with practical models and sets. I have a feeling you guys would film on 35mm if you could. You're using Black Magic Cameras, so it would be no problem to properly simulate film stock.

      @@InCameraTV There was a show in the 90's called Movie Magic and they did "making of" episodes on the old practical and optical effects movies.
      Your videos remind me of that. It's great to see the old school hands on approach is still alive and well in the world. Keep up the great work and good luck to you all!

    I love that the effect you used to sell that there's a bigger ship out there is basically the same effect that ILM used in The Empire Strikes Back to say, "Hey, remember the big Star Destroyer from the last film? There's a bigger one of those now!"

    The Phallic pillars reminds me of the item that Kirk is holding in that episode from season 1, That Are little Girls Made Of. Which I think is funny title.
