I travelled on her in First Class with my mother and brother from Naples, arriving in New York on September 28, 1939. This must have been one of her very last regular transatlantic crossings. She was indeed a very fine ship. My crossing is described in FRAGMENTS II.
@@leonvrtovec4445 Actually, the Rex and Conte di Savoia ran multiple and successful crossings in 1938-1939 along with many other Italian liners that were scheduled for evacuating American citizens and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis and by 1939, with Italy being declared neutral on September 4th, 1939, 3 days after WW2 broke out, these westbound voyages from Genoa-New York with no stopovers were fully booked and not surprisingly fares to the Americas increased by 40% mainly because money was needed to cover the insurance premiums of war risk cover and partly to make up for the almost complete lack of passengers traveling to Europe at that time.
Thanks for this wonderfull vide. The WWII brought not only the end of some millions people, but also for a few hundred ships, and some highlights, than REX, Normandie, Champlain .... Very emotional film.
That was the finest way or travelling ever!!!Planes are obviously faster nowadays, but we can`t compare this, i mean.Would someone travel from Italy to NY in a plane sitting in a small seat in tourist class when we can spend six faboulous days crossing the Atlantic in this magnificent pice of art???Some things had gone because of technology and that's a real shame...
my grandfather took his 2 daughters, one of them was my mother. On the SS Rex, from nyc back to italy to see his family in the 1930’s. i have some photos.
I live 2 kilometers from the area where it happened. In the town where I live (Izola) are still alive people who saw it live, a lot of stories I've heard and all end the same way .....
touching video! The person who sings the song is an awesome singer...is she the same singer as from the Normandie (part 3, when she's towed to the scrapyard) video?
SS Rex was a steam ship,as I see from the engine room plan there were 4 steam turbines connected via reductors to the propellers, 4 propellers. and 12 main steam boilers. Electricity system were produced by 2 auxiliary diesel generators and 2 steam turbogenerators, with 2 auxiliary boilers. There were an emergency diesel generator placed on the ,,classe speciale deck . chief engineer,Slavko Franca
Between 1933 and 1937 Rex was doing genoa, gibraltaar where she a stopover of 4 hours and then left to new york, with a record time between these two ports of 4 days and 13 hours, world record, but she never stopped in lisbon because of the river delays in the taggus river; on the other side ths sister ship very fast conte di savoia, never stopped nor in lisbon nor in gibraltar but in funchal,Madeira where she left to new York; I was in the board of the portuguese steamship joão belo of portugal, and between madeira and Porto santo, on 11th april 1940, 6.pm, we crossed with the enormous and glamorous italian Conte di Savoia, at incredible speed that seems the the 6.700 tons joão belo to be sinking with the provokings waves made by the propellers of conte di Savoia.Elmano de Freitas Morna
My mother and grandfather left Italy to come to American on the Rex in March 1939. They escaped Hitler and Mussolini and joined my grandmother in Chicago.
Sad thing is that. The Germans took over the Italian ships since Italy surrendered in 1943. Rex was gonna be sunk as a blockship to prevent British or American warships to pass some were in Germany or Italy.
Technically the blame for the ships destruction was an organization not unfamiliar with destroying world heritage, the Waffen SS. If the SS had not taken over the ship and the British had not found out that they were planning to sink her as a barrier to the port then the Rex might still be around after the war.
Most all wars made for busines ! Rex, Bremen, Europa, also the French battleships laying at Oran where Konkurenz for the British "Seamonopol" .This was the raeason and in a war the victor can do what ever he is wanting ! Sorry the Rex was a wonderfull ship, and the oportunity was well for the British aircraft. Rex was a
I'm answering The question about the name Some said that because ships are"female" their names should be females or associated with them. But the italiano name for these liners is "transatlantico" wich is a male name
God those Italian liners were gorgeous, from the first Augustus through to the Michelangelo and Raffaelo.

I don't think that was the Rex...it stopped to make transatlantic crossing after Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1936..

I fully concur!!!!They are a human technical achievement made for leisure and not war and posed no threat to anyone!!

What a waste of such a great liner....beautiful video once again

That part of the coast between Koper and Izola is still known as "By Rex". There's also a commemorative plate at the site.
I'm totally agree with you.We want the '30 travelling back!!!

nice vid. but why you added diesels at 4:04?

Beautiful ship...neither she nor Conte di Savoia deserved the fates they got.
Viva l'Italia! Evviva il Rex padrone degli oceani!
Regis nomen navis omen
I live 50 km from where Rex was sinked. The Rex horn was heard 50 km away, it must have been huge.
It's sad. The destruction of a Ocean Liner either by fire or sunk by War or even scrapped is so depressing. Puts me in Dark mode.
Tyler Frederick Yea. They were the largest and best objects created by man until the jet age came.
what you mean at 4:06 a Diesel engine running? Rex had turbo sets
concordo
3:23, the swimming pool
People will always be so sooo stupid. They just destroy..and destroy....And ship.. what a ship that was!
My mother and grandfather left Italy to come to American on the Rex in March 1939. They escaped Hitler and Mussolini and joined my grandmother in Chicago.
why all nice things come to an end? too early end. i vote that they make replicas from the most famous steamers, cause i wanna take a long trip... ;)

Rex.
So in italian it sounded like il transatlantico Rex

Rex was a
it sink in slovenia and he got a twin but i foget the name
I'm answering The question about the name
Some said that because ships are"female" their names should be females or associated with them. But the italiano name for these liners is "transatlantico" wich is a male name
In Spanish ships are male also. Maybe only in English they are "she"
its a beautiful ship but a strange name normally ships are thought to be feminine and are given names with a sort of assoication with females
In italian all these liners sounded like a male name
Too easy hit an undifensive and unarmored civil ship.
