I really hope that some of you guys can experience this amazing place as well. If you end up going, let me know - and send photos! I'd love to see! :D
P.S. People always ask me why / how I always hike in flip flops (slippers). I prefer hiking in the most flimsy shoes possible, because I want to feel as close as possible to being barefoot. I grew up running around in the woods barefoot as a kid, maybe that's where it comes from! I tried buying good hiking shoes once, and I fell three times on the hike and constantly felt off balance. I have never fallen in flip flops (knock on wood!) and like to be able to actually feel the surface I'm walking on. A downside is that my feet get scratched up sometimes, but I'd rather have scratches than feel unsure of my footing. So. There you have it - the most detailed conversation I have ever had about footwear. :D

The Great Wall is truly a great experience, I remembered my first time on the Wall, its everything what its hyped up to be and more! At one point you will feel overwhelmed, thousands of years of history right beneath your feet, still intact, still standing, amazing! Imagining a lone ancient chinese sentry patrolling these walls thousands of years ago, devoted in defending his country with his life from outside threats, far away apart from his family back home, walking the same parts of the wall where you are walking, it will give you goosebumps.

Hi Jordan, what I like the most about you and Poppy is that you girls are not some spoiled city girls, at all. You are seasoned travelers that can handle things on your own. You really go out and experience things by submerging yourselves into the surroundings, and get the most out of your travel. You two are not finicky, almost always positive. That is very refreshing. It is your attitude that makes your videos so very enjoyable. Cheers!

Americans tend to be adventurous backpackers. I imagine Chinese and South Korean ladies wouldn’t go out without a large hat, parasol and don’t expect to traverse on these unknown, unpaved roads without a male guide, but their commentaries might also be quite different- more poetic and introspective as opposed to full of repetitive platitudes

@@user-db5zi6gt7p sorry I don't understand what you're saying. However, if you don't get the joke, I will try to explain it.
In China, we all know it is called the Great Wall.
the op mentioned in the US they are building great wall now, where it does not actually look like a wall since it was more like a fence if you google the fence border between US and Mexico. And lately the double steel wire between the US and Canada.
Thus I am saying, the latest trend to build a wall at present is "Great Fence".

Hey Lewis, as others said, Beijing is a little bit cold in December. In particular, the Great Wall is located in the rural area of Beijing, so there is much colder than downtown. But, if you are lucky enough and there is some snow, I suggest you go to Badaling Great Wall (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badaling). It is safer for tourists than other wild parts. And you can enjoy a totally different view of the Great Wall wandering in the snow mountains. That's really cool! Do NOT go to the wild wall in winter. It's dangerous!

I hope it doesn't give an impression that you can do such an adventure anywhere else, as it's very risky to do so in most other parts of the world.

I am from Beijing, and I am sure those teenagers and young people will be happy to help you guys out. You will loose a lot of extra money no matter if your bargain with the scammer is successful or not.

The management of communist dogs is correct. Come join the Communist Party. You can get a lot of wealth.
The Communist dog uses your money and kindness to make weapons.
      Refused to buy China-made goods,
China's large and medium-sized enterprises, the source of funds is the Communist Party,
Because the Chinese Communist Party holds shares in China's large enterprises,
In China, 80% of entrepreneurs join the Communist Party, the implementation of the communist economy。

When you two were sitting there looking from the camera to each other and back again while the crickets chirped looked like my two dogs when I suggest something neither really wants to do. It was a really cute moment! lol! To see The Wall under those circumstances is really special. When I look at it I see each individual brick and I picture someone carrying it up the mountain. Then I picture two hands setting it in place, so many years ago. Your interpretation of it put a real human perspective on it for me.

When I watched your videos on youtube first time, I was living in Oregon. I just wondered if you guys would visit some places in China. I came back to China in early August, and noticed that you guys get to Shenzhen. It's amazing. Now, you step forward and get to Beijing :) I am not sure which part of the Great Wall you visited, but the wild wall is an absolutely right choice because that's the REAL Great Wall. One of the famous visiting locations close to Beijing is Jinkou Great Wall. It's a dangerous but beautiful place. If you guys have interests, spare time on it. Hope you guys have wonderful days in Beijing and China!

Yes, do it! Let me know once you've gone, I'd love to see your photos!
I personally did not wear hiking boots, but that's just because I'm a weirdo and actually prefer to hike in flip flops, haha. I think most everyone else would want hiking shoes / sneakers for this. I'd recommend long pants because of the all of the vegetation, and a coat because it gets cold at night. Also there are three hike options, easy, medium, or difficult. We chose medium and it took about 3.5 hours. It's not very clear on the website, but you have to request a guide in advance (it is 150 RMB extra). If you choose not to take a guide, they give you a map to go on your own.
Excited for you and so happy that you found this place before you went! :D

I like that this wall is not over-crowded, everytime I travel its like an army of people as far as your eyes can see.
Just insane the amount of people at tourist spots.
When I was younger everywhere we went was almost deserted now. Sigh.
I hate seeing garbage everywhere I go and brainless people smoking and throwing their butts on the ground or dumping their garbage into the local canal.
Everywhere I go some hawker trying to peddle me some shit that I dont want. Fucken junk trinkets or other shit. Lol sometimes they bark at you and demand a tip in a rude and aggressive manner. Sigh.
At least this tour its NOT quite as aggressive.
Thanjs Poppy and Jordan. Your both very sweet. 😊❤👍

Chow Chow are one of the meanest most ferocious breed of dogs. They are chinese fighting dogs. My father has a hole in his face from one, when he went to hug his grandma's dog, my son has a hole in his face, when one walked up, tail wagging, never growled, never made a ove of aggression before ripping hole through his face and having surgery. The 1 other chow Chow belonged to some family, and every night I was there for dinner from the time it was a puppy, and no matter that it new me, it would attack me with any sudden moves. I am glad you girls must have found the nicest boy on the planet. I'm not afraid of dogs, and maybe not even Chow Chow's but I am EXTREMELY wary around ANY of them. That fellow looked pretty damned friendly... Enjoyed your videos girl... I live in various Asian countries from time to time... BUT I have yet to see the Great Wall.. and I am going to go! I tell you! Top of my list. and NOT in a tourist area.

I am Chinese and by watching your video I am very very sure that the locals were trying to sell you a personalized tour or taxi service to your destination in one of their cars or vans. That's why they stress to you or lied to you that the train doesn't leave until much later. The locals wouldn't be so stupid to sell you a 6-yuan ticket you can buy yourself for 600 yuan for no added value. With this in mind, you can understand their behavior in your video - like saying big NO, NO when you offered him 20 yuan; he probably felt insulted because that is way below his cost, not even enough to pay for the gas! In any event, you made the right decision to stick with public transport. In general, do not hire such personal tour or taxi services without a Chinese-speaking friend by your side. Awesome VLog! Even I have been to the Great Wall a few times (yes, to the tourist-flocked sections, unfortunately), you just made me want to do what you just did! Keep up the good work!
