- Following on just one day after our amazing close encounter with the 27s orca pod in Shetland we see a different pod - the 12s! The 12s pod are a pod of orca/killer whales which we have seen before off mainland Scotland. The pod is very distinctive as it has three huge bulls and a female named 'Breagha' or '12' with two notches out of her dorsal fin. Breagha was the first orca/killer whale to be matched between Iceland and Scotland and she was first identified in 1987 making her over 40 years old!
The 12s pod are a Scottish/Icelandic pod who are known to travel between the two areas, often being seen around Scotland in summer months. We first saw the 12s off the north east coast of Caithness, Scotland where we followed them for the whole day as they were heading north up the coast, often coming in close to shore making for great encounters! It was nice to see the 12s pod in a different location this year up in Shetland, although a little further away. The pod had initially been seen off the island of Yell, heading south where we caught with them off the north east coast of Shetland mainland.
The pod stayed fairly far out, over the other side of the sound where they were heading into the island of Whalsay. After seeing the pod head further south we decided to take a chance and get the ferry over the Bressay to see if we could catch up with them again.

Great video, we are currently wild camping at stoer lighthouse, just up from clattol beach, Highlands. We are just staring at the sea constantly, but as yet haven't managed to sea any dolphins /Orca as yet, not sure if they come down this way, take care guys👍
Thank you! Sounds amazing, hopefully the weather isn't too bad for you? Yes, whales and dolphins are regularly seen from that lighthouse and multiple pods of orca over the years including John Coe and Aquarius! Our fingers are crossed for you 💙
@@findingfinsuk thx for the info👍
Hi both what is the best time to visit Shetland for orcas pls I want to go next year x
@carybarrettwildlifeandtrai3261 hello! Have you managed to find a camper yet? Shetland has been quieter than usual last year and this year but we used to find July and October/November the best times. Mainland Scotland is just as good and picks up around April time with regular sightings through June and July too. We've had some amazing encounters along the coast of Caithness! 💙
@@findingfinsuk hi thanks for that information and yes I’ve got my camper
