AJ looks like a really great guy, especially to sail with. He clearly enjoys sharing his experience, and that kind of attitude (the enjoying the sharing) really makes for an enjoyable time and a great learning experience
Thank you so much Dylan! I'm thrilled that you're enjoying my videos and am honored! I've really enjoyed watching all of your films and they've been such a great inspiration to me. I think that yours are some of the best sailing videos on the internet.
great job videoing this adventure. i actually look forward to the new installments each week. Really enjoyed the knot tying by Cap'n AJ..the flying bowline was a new one for me..kite flying video really says it all...what a life!
Well I must say, One of your best... love the Go Pro on the kite and what an amazing sunrise. You must have really have hated this trip coming to an end.. I really like the kite in the life raft idea. Ill go in half with you and we'll make our millions.. Chris
Just found this vlog 5 years after the fact, good for me... From an older Capt, (retired) aka.. a old salt encrusted sea dog 64' Ketch driver who now is 70+ years young) this video (vlog) is still relevant to many, many folks. Enjoyed the lessons well taught as well as watching new sea folks getting there bearings on a truly fine performance vessel of that time which indeed is still a first rate passage maker heart breaker (if you loose a race ;-). Thanks again for sharing. Would have enjoyed blogging had the tech been available back in the early 70s, We would have used a Bolex 16 mm but film was just not in the budget although a Nikon 35 mm was aboard. We cruised many a passage in a Formosa style "Clipper", heavy wood (Mahogany) planks being over an inch thick in most of the hull, impeccable joinery, winches were muscle powered non self tailing and were always where the heavy sea's could take a swipe at you, jackline or not! Hate to think what a 64' hand constructed ketch would run in build-up and fitting out with modern winches of this time.... She was 64' LOA, 59' on deck, nice bowsprit and main stick was 74', absolutely not a performance vessel in any way, but would take a heavy sea-state without fear , bury her bow and move on, she talked a lot, every timber, halyard and spar spoke there own song. Most large vessels in the day could sail rings around her Hull speed 7 knots, maybe 8 in a surfing blow and was rock steady in large , confused sea's. Although a nicely shaped displacement hull with a wide beam amid-ship with slightly tapered stern/transom. We refitted her to carry passengers and light cargo from Miami and the Caribbean to many islands in the Bahamas chain, Eleuthrea , Spanish Wells as well Caicos , Provo, the Corn Islands, adventure at it's best for a 21 year old following after "adventures In Paradise" except we were a Ketch (great sail plan) not a Sloop,Cutter or Yawl. Now days with all the high tech and advanced materials not many new style Ketch's around. Thanks again for your sharing your journey. One question, MUSIC, who is playing around 4:23 - 5:47, nice background... David. SV Eleutheros (ret)
Yes - Every life-raft should have a kite! I will be re-thinking the contents of my grab bag... Excellent film, really enjoyed it. Now off to see some of your others. Pete
Drake and Moe, thank you so much for your videos. I just ordered a Kitty Hawk 7.5 Parafoil kite after watching your video. My cousin, brother and I will be sailing a Hunter 26 from Panama City Florida around the keys and up to Charleston South Carolina beginning April 19th. I will try your camera trick and try using the kite as a small kite sail. Best of luck on your trip to Ireland. I check the videos every Tuesday and Thursday.
Kite Cam looks excellent. I've been playing around with RC helicopters and they don't work well when the wind kicks ups. I want to set one of these up while I windsurf and just zip around it. Cool idea!
Just got my Hero3 (HumbleOutdoors w/free 32GB SD Card), I have a Albin Vega that will be getting wet this spring after a four year restoration. The kite cam looks like a ton of fun..Thx
Drake & Monique: I really love all of your videos! Thank you for sharing your adventures, and educating all of us who dream of following in your footsteps. As a native Montrealer (now living in San Francisco), I'm looking forward to the Canadian leg of your voyage Northward! Inspired by this video, I just tried the GoPro Kite Camera setup while sailing with some friends around SF Bay. It worked pretty well! Most of the video is too shaky to be usable, so I'm thinking up ways to better stabilize the camera. But I got some amazing stills out of it. If nothing else, it earned us some major admiration points from other boaters in the Bay :)
+Jonathan Karpfen That's awesome! :) Monique is Canadian and originally from Montreal and we are looking forward to sailing to there someday very much! We're also really into making aerial videos using our drone on our other channel ParagonSkies. I hope you enjoy this demo reel. :) th-cam.com/video/Hbb7xKV2fdI/w-d-xo.html
The Garmin touch screen chart plotter mounted on the binnacle wasn't connected to the autopilot. The autopilot was a B&G computer connected to a hydraulic RAM on the rudder post quadrant.
Hi Donjobs, Thank you. What version iPad are you using? What software are you using on it to view youtube videos? Until we figure out why this particular video isn't working on your iPad, maybe this new Google iOS app for viewing youtube videos might be worth trying... Please let us know if you have more info. Thanks!
I wonder if you could use a metallic thread in he line of your kite to use as an antenna to increase the range of your handheld VHF for use in a life raft? Feel free to steal this idea if you want, just give me a sample if it works!
Tell Mo to keep her eyes on the horizon as much as possible. This will help with her motion sickness. Down below it's more difficult, but it can still be done.
And I bet she got land sickness when she got off the boat too huh?, ha ha, been there, had to take the lawn chair into the showers at the yacht club when we got back cause we couldn't stand up, yea, been there, had a BLAST !
AJ looks like a really great guy, especially to sail with. He clearly enjoys sharing his experience, and that kind of attitude (the enjoying the sharing) really makes for an enjoyable time and a great learning experience
The way you did the sun rise in stages was really outstanding. My favourite time of the day.

The sunrise scene, music combo was very well done!
Great use of a Kitty Hawk Kites' parafoil kite! Excellent video.

How awsome is it to be sailing with Capt. AJ? It's like the guy is always thinking a few steps ahead. Great stuff guys!
Hey Drake, wow, that kite cam shot is excellent. Really enjoy the documentary coverage of this cruise, great work !!
Well done, best kite-cam while underway I've seen.

Love the opening photography, kite and captains AJ advice shoving kite in a liferaft.
Thank you! This is seriously one of my favourite videos...
Love the skycam bit.

I agree with Jody, fantastic job. Only down side is i wish the videos were longer. Keep up the great work. :)
Great work with the GoPro :)
Awesome music for sailing.
You guys are GREAT.
Manochehr Bakhtiari aw shucks.. :) Thanks for sailing with us,
It's such a great suggestion, but I don't think I would have ever thought of this. Now, however, we'll always have a kite in our ditch bag!
We tried more than a dozen songs before choosing that one.. Monique is the master of finding the perfect music for our videos!

This video is so awesome! I just want to drop everything and come sailing with you guys. Keeping making videos and sharing on you tube please.
really cool !!!

A kite on every life raft.... Another lesson learned.
Very cool.
The flats fishing while being pulled by a kite is "Fishing Tips Platinum"!
@everyone - Many thanks for the comments! We really appreciate the feedback. Fair winds, calm seas and happy sailing! - DrakeParagon
~~_/)~~ Mo is adapting. She is a keeper....

AJ is like MaGayver
Hey Drake, What program do you use to show the map with plotted journey at the beginning of your videos?
Hi Sean, those were made with Apple's iMovie software - the globe is a built in feature.
Thank you for the reply.
Please ask Captain
