I actually have an amusing waldo story. I went to this anime con with a couple of friends a few years ago and one of the friends got separated from the rest of us. so we went up to the second floor, which basically was a balcony that looked out across the main floor of the convention center, to see if we could find her...and then we saw him, waldo, standing in a group of other cosplayers. I still wish I'd gotten a picture.
Wally is definitely a British national treasure. Not sure if he surpasses David Attenborough or Gordon Ramsey but he's up there. So proud of this contribution to society 👏
And of course, there was a complaint ... there's always one, isn't there? Damndest thing is, you can go to any tropical holiday resort and see tons of topless sunbathing women. That reminds me ... time I booked another trip! 😀
I was the same, in that when I first heard the name "Waldo" it was in that same episode of Simpsons (Great gag by the way, especially with the kid in the book pointing to him as well, LOL classic Simpsons) but even then, I thought Waldo was used to avoid copyright by Simpsons so they did not use Wally instead. But yeah, turns out he was called Waldo in the US.
I counted quite a few people in the world record breaking attempts who didn't have glasses. In fact the Japanese crowd had quite a few people without glasses on. They should have been disqualified.

Loved the books as a kid. But the one that challenged me more than anything (not sure exactly which Waldo book it's from) the two pager is a dog style spa, I think, and you have to find the REAL Woof among hundreds of Woof look-alikes. The only difference, Woof has 5 stripes on his tail. OMG that particular puzzle took me quite a bit longer than usual. Altogether with finding the extras like the scroll, key, side characters, etc I must have been on that puzzle for at least 3 hours. Still loved the challenge, though. XD
According to Forest Gump, Waldo is known as "Charlie" in Vietnam. … But in Korea he is, of course, known as "Kim". My first sighting of a "Where's Waldo" book was at an Optometrist (eye doctor) waiting room! LOL! No joke! Did anyone find waldo next to the framed Star Wars picture in the upper-left side of the video?? Clever Minty!
I remember around 93 a friend of mine at the time found the Where's Wally books and basically went nuts with them, he got them out and repeatedly renewed/got them out again them over and over from the local library. Then when he found someone had reserved them so he couldn't renew them he put in a reserve himself after having a sort of hissing fit about it, makes it worst he could easily have gone out and brought them properly from WHSmiths

as a kid, my room was Waldo themed. white and red everything, waldo covers and sheets, books galore. My folks found a red and white desk and dresser too.

Non-white students (and Asians are now counted as white for some reason) were doing worse, so instead of trying to improve things they just lowered the standards so more kids would be able to graduate.

They also used to put pictures of missing children on regular sized milk cartons in the grocery store. I didn't put the two together until just now.
In Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" video, there's a character named Waldo. At the end of the video, there's a caption that reads "No one is really sure what became of Waldo after graduation". If "no one is really sure what became of him", I guess that was Van Halen's little addition to "Where's Waldo?" ........................ In more important news, I'm glad to see you're on the mend.
i had a classmate who dressed up as Waldo for our high school class photo, it helped me to find myself in the photo as i was close to him in the group set up.
I liked the concept of Waldo and even borrowed a book or two from the library. But, I wasn't patient enough to look for all of the individual items. My brother and son never cared to sit down long enough to look. They had other more fun things to entertain themselves with. Last year I did have a real life sighting of Waldo at Silver Legacy in Reno, NV. I used my phone to take a photo and still have it on my camera (how could I not?). Despite the circumstances I was very surprised. It was a photo of him walking away from me. Did I mention it was on Hallowe'en? Still it was a genius costume idea that never would have occured to me in a million years. So, you know I brought me phone out before he got too far away! -I love Mad Magazine's version. Where's Waldo for Morons, it was printed in the early 90s (I think). Very funny! -I thought Odlaw was an evil version, also. It always seemed sinister. In the art, I mean. I never saw the series. -I had forgotten about the wizard. I thought he was neat, too. -Watching you dance ... you silly! -I'm not surprised that he was made into a video game ... even if it was redundant, because since the beginning of video games: If they thought they could make a profit out of that video they would jump at the chance! Waldo is pretty much a historical name. The only famous person with it was Ralph Waldo Emerson.

They're both about equally as common here. Actually, Wally is probably slightly more common, as it could be short for Walter.
