I appreciated how even though there were realistic people having the realistic hand-wringing moments about what was happening, at no point did their characters' principles get illogically compromised, not even Reece's when it's pretty clear that though he's doing it to evil people, he is unequivocally doing evil and is at peace with it.

The orbiting characters, and even those closest to the main character, make their opinion on the matter known, but it doesn't preach at the audience in an attempt to tell them how they should feel about it.
We can have whateverthehell opinion we like without any punctuation from the writer, other than the completion of the list and the conspiracy coming to light. Doesn't attempt to make you feel bad for being 100% on board with the slaughter, or for believing the main character could have done more to expose the conspiracy and have the monsters responsible dragged through the legal system (though it's implied many are just too powerful and influential to be satisfyingly prosecuted, much less given the death penalty for the direct deaths of several servicemen).

The most refreshing thing about this show is how it's a story about vengeance but it never preaches about how "wrong" it is to seek vengeance or retribution and the "cycle of violence". I also wonder how many of these incredible projects would even have been able to see the light of day if not for them, which is why, even considering the disgusting crap they pull, I'm yet to be on the side of "burn the both of them to the ground".

Luigi was by far my favorite character in this series aside from Mario himself and he broke my heart, he broke my heart into a thousand pieces. Now I understand that Luigi's Mansions exist because Luigi wanted to be surrounded by lost souls shackled by regret just like himself. Wallowing in his eternal misery eventually gave life to Guigi, the manifestation of all his sins in a concentrated form. They say both of them continue sucking up those coins in the bowels of hell itself to this day which will probably be explored in

Y'know, the more I watch your "Spec Ops: The Line vs ThE lAsT oF uS tWo" video, the more I think this is basically a mirror of Spec Ops The Line, or at the very least has a similar plot to it with similar characters:
    • James Reece and Martin Walker both start out as confident military guys (a Navy SEAL and a Delta Force operative, respectively) ready to finish the mission and go home.
    • Both stories tell about how fucked up war is and about how fucked up the government is.
    • They both end in similar ways: Walker and Reece lose their friends and go insane, determined to find the characters who fucked them over (Konrad and the SecDef, respectively), but while Walker fails to physically kill Konrad cuz he killed himself before Walker even arrived (although you can choose to kill him), Reece succeeds in his mission, first killing an NCIS agent in his own bedroom, then finding a corporate VP and torturing him into getting what he wants before drugging him with a methadone cocktail, disemboweling the cartel leader who murdered his family and then forcing him to walk around a pipe, killing a man on the literal steps of his own building, then running from the military and blowing up his two commanders after drowning another one in the Pacific and finally murdering his way to the SecDef before she kills herself to avoid responsibility. Walker, meanwhile, either succeeds or fails in killing Konrad after so much bullshit happens to him. While Walker can choose to accept responsibility for his actions by shooting himself in the head or having Konrad cap him, Reece absolutely does NOT regret his actions, not cuz he's delusional but cuz he genuinely understands that these are truly horrible people who've done terrible things.
    • Walker, at first, wants to be a hero but soon loses his shit, refusing to hold himself accountable for accidentally dropping Willy Pete on almost 50 civilians; after Lugo is lynched by civilians, Walker can choose to let them go or murder them in a fit of rage. Reece starts out as a hero with a happy family and a clean reputation, but he slowly loses his cool and eventually (in a way) disregards human life altogether, blatantly telling his friend Liz that he can't just stop to help anyone caught in the blast that fucks up Steve Horn and his men; eventually, he viciously guns down hordes of less-than-shit contractors who are "jUsT dOiNg ThEiR jObS" (which under almost no circumstances justifies killing people), smashing one guy in the face with a tomahawk and then putting a bullet in the last guy after he voluntarily drops his Glock and opens the safe room door for him.
    • Walker, despite losing his shit and then becoming an active sadist, can choose to do honorable things, such as choosing civilians over a CIA agent and saving a man who simply wanted to feed his family and was so desperate to do so that a soldier had to step in and murder them all. He also tried to save Dubai but indirectly fucks over their water supply and then has the choice of shooting the fucker who was responsible or letting him burn alive. Meanwhile, Reece's actions are less than honorable; he shoots an NCIS agent in the head and then guns down hordes of contractors. To make it simple: both are absolute lunatics, but one can choose to do good things while the other is an absolute psycho by the end of his story.
    • The game and show end in similar ways; like I mentioned above, Walker can either take accountability for his actions or refuse to accept it, and if he kills Konrad and then relinquishes his gun when the convoy shows up, he leaves and presumably returns home a broken soul who lost his mind. Meanwhile, Reece succeeds in fucking over the people who ruined his life, but unlike Walker who goes home a broken man or dies in a desperate attempt to redeem himself, Reece is able to accept his losses and move on with his life, satisfied that he could avenge them

Terminal List has the "perfect ratio" on Rotten Tomatoes because of extremely gay sociopolitical reasons. Positive audience score because.. well, it's actually "good TV" if you're onboard for its kind of revenge. Negative critic score because there are a myriad of people with an axe to grind with Pratt's religious and political views, as well as *anything* glorifying any aspect of the military, along with the reveal of what really was the catalyst for everything that went wrong in the story.
If anything it's an endorsement, though it is far and away not perfect. I'm onboard with the flashbacks, but there were stretches where they were *really* ploddingly drawn out. Still gripped me for an entire impromptu binge watch I was not expecting.

  • @CatsOverdrive

    This point only really CLICKED with me on my third replay of the series[SPOILER];
Why all the weird hallucinogenic editing involving his family's memory? Why does it keep showing the whole "bird hit window" moment as something that's extremely fragmented and very dreamlike? Because the experimental drug is actually doing it's job. The drug works by blocking out if, not aggressively obfuscates, memories with strong, stressful or negative emotional attachment/association.
So what does that say about James Reece? That for him, the most unforgettably frightening moment in his life is not the physical risk that comes with his job, nor his capabilities for efficient, cold violence...it's the realization that he has to confront his wife and daughter about those.--The reason the whole "bird hit window" scene kinds of always cut off seemingly in a very specific part is because that very specific point is where it dawned on him that he, somehow, have to walk them through his experiences, his mindset, and his expectation towards his job's risks, in faint hope of put them at ease. And at that moment he felt overwhelmed.
The moment we could finally see the rest of that scene is actually the indication that he's finally able to make peace with that for himself. Therefore, the drug no longer attempts to "block" that memory out.
Also goddamn; Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch's journey and bro-chemistry reminds me of Y0 Kiryu and Nishiki.

Instead of the films merits. Which is how it should be done. And the majority of the audience didn’t enjoy.

Terminal List really highlights just how far Hollywood has fallen over the past 20 years. Honestly the show doesn't do anything special that we haven't seen before, but since everything else is woke feminist trash and the same shallow super hero bullshit that we've been bashed over the head with for nigh on 20 years it's practically gold by comparison. The adage, "what's old is new again" comes to mind. If this show came out as a movie in the late 80's or early 90's with films like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Robo Cop, Terminator I think it'd be regarded as highly as those movies are today (at least by anyone older than 25 who remembers them). It has the same type of spirit. The same goes for Reacher (the one with Alan Ritchson).

I fully believe Critical Drinker's theory on why "professional reviewers" give it such a low score: It's a show about men being men. A simple, "You wronged me. I'm coming for you." No pushing progressive ideals, that would make no sense being in this kind of show. Plus, it's star, Chris Pratt has been the target of being called an "evil alt righter" because he attends Church and is most likely conservative.

To all those who wanted to know about the book. Season 1 of the Amazon series blends elements from the first four books, from what I've noticed. You'll see them once you've seen both the books and the show. I've come to appreciate elements from the series and the books, as both are great in their own right. I'd recommend watching the show first, then reading the books.

I've read all the books, minus the one coming out later this month, but haven't watched the show yet.
From what I saw here it looks like this covers mostly the first book with pieces of the others, but you mentioned it does more, so that's cool.
I was hoping maybe it would be one season per book, minus the second book with all the boat stuff. Seems a bit difficult to make into entertaining television I suppose.
Either way, I'm looking forward to checking this out after I finish that last book.

You should definitely read the books, it really shows the skill of Carrs writings. The show did depart drastically from the book in some parts but was still true to the core of the story and it's themes. There are also some things in the books that Amazon would never touch with a 1,000 ft pole (the decapitation of a muslim clergy leader who was secretly funding terrorists, specifically Al Queda) so some of the changes make sense. I definitely like the books more but the show is still excellent and I don't think it's departures from the book make the show worse. TLDR read the books (yes there are multiple, and the 7th is coming out may 2024) because they are SUPREME political/espionage action-thrillers!

Maybe it's just me but I really couldn't bring myself to like the show more than other eerily similar stories. Majorly because of how the villains are just so lackluster in the show. They lack any serious punch. They only really go after Reese once while he picks them off one by one in front of them. They get told about it and just ignore it.
For me, the issue is just so glaring that it drags the show into mediocrity.

  • @Vargas_Shezar

obligatory - book was better. show was disappointing.
    But for real.
In the book Reece is a expert in tactics and being stealthy, solving problems with his vast knowledge of being a seal and trying not to get on anyones radar, because you know, he is just a man, not a one man army.
In the show he flat out opens fire with an assault rifle in in front of some kind of building.

There's two things that really jumped out at me in this show.
For one, every time Pratt had that "confused-but-putting-the-pieces together" look I was physically incapable of not seeing the buffoon from Parks and Rec. It's not anyone's fault, but I could never get past it either.
For another, this show had what I like to call Shock Delight. You know how shock humor gets a laugh because somebody is saying something horrible and you can't believe it? If you'll pardon the spoilers, this show has a corrupt old lady politician desperate to secure her legacy who experiments on people using an untested drug through the use of an Emergency Use Authorization and causes massive side effects, and at one point uses big tech to censor a reporter trying to expose her. This show is not subtle, and every time it would say something like this I would be unable to believe that they were being allowed to say it. They even reference China being what China is, which is something I did not expect Amazon to sign off on.

My only complaint from the book is the changes to Katie Buranek. They race swapped her for the show. Not sure if that was Jack Carr's call, or Amazon's (it was probably Amazon's). Generally speaking in the books Katie and James Reece already had known eachother for years. It gets covered later but Reece's father knew Katies from his time at the CIA. Katie was still an independent investigative journalist, but she had a lot more recognition both in print and on cable news. She wasn't a hippie dippy gypsie journalist bouncing between advances at venture capital firm backed outlets like Slate, Vice, or Gawker. Also I'd point out those digital rags like Slate or Vice wouldn't publish an article about a conspiracy to cover up bad drugs made by big pharma. They would drop to their knees and felate any drug company willing to throw ad dollars and puff piece candidates their way. Other slight changes include that they axed a scene where Reece kills an Al Qaeda aligned Islamic Imam in San Francisco and leaves an ISIS flag draped over the Imam's severed head to pin the blame on ISIS. They cut out the use of a jihadist purposely radicalized online by the US government to try and kill Reece and Buranick at that diner. The US government has been caught red handed purposely radicalizing US islamic extremists at least once. The Garland terror attack attempt a few years ago had an FBI agent attempt to flee the scene after he just got done texting the Jihadists to "tear up Texas". The theory behind why US intelligence and law enforcement would engage in this activity is to further justify the surveillance state. Might have to save another conspiraxy and false flag attack for at least Season 2. Also I'll point out the FBI involvement wasn't in the books. The FBI characters and subplots only exist in the TV series.
