    I'll miss my Einser, it has been a fun travelling companion for 135K miles. It is still the best drivers hatchback outside of performance models and the BMW diesels are excellent. The only thing I won't miss is the lack of a spare tyre..... it really sucks getting a puncture on a motorway at 11pm with the family onboard and waiting for a recovery vehicle!

    These are getting pretty affordable - cheaper than the said mazda 3 of the same age. Just wonder about the reliability and service costs of "premium" badge. Really like the looks of this, it is neck a neck with mazda 3 for best looking hatch imo.

  • @Sandouras
    @Sandouras 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Look, i dont like this car, but even if it wasnt RWD (like the A3), it'd still have that hump in the middle of car (like in the A3), albeit perhaps smaller. The solution to that is TO PUT EACH FOOT ON EITHER SIDE OF SAID HUMP. If that hump makes the rear seat on the 1 series reduntant, the same applies to every car ever.

    • @lukeeclair7736
      @lukeeclair7736 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Maybe the footwells arent that big for 3 legs?

    • @beefbroth6539
      @beefbroth6539 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandouras I've tried it, while it's doable, it's not really comfortable unless all 3 people at the back are kids or small adults.

    • @Sandouras
      @Sandouras 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beef Broth It is the same for every car though. Even those that are front wheel drive have it, albeit a bit smaller.

    • @beefbroth6539
      @beefbroth6539 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandouras That's the thing, on other cars it's tolerable for long journeys, in the 1 series it's not, due to the combination of limited rear space plus big transmission tunnel. That's why Matt also mentioned it in this review. He mentions this in pretty much every car that has the same problem.

    • @Sandouras
      @Sandouras 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beef Broth Rebecca does too even in FWD cars and i think it's unfair. She always says that you have you twist your body to get your feet on the one side of the tunnel. Rebecca, it's easy, dont wear a skirt and put one foot on each side of it.

  • @ShaunMMX

    Don't know why BMW or Mercedes don't try to bring over the A Class and the 1 series over to North America. We already get the 2 series and B class in Canada, it would be nice if they brought over the A and the 1.

    I’m a bit late but i’m looking for a new car and this is one of the options. I currently drive a 2013 corsa limited edition, and despite the great, sporty looks, it’s really slow only being a 1.2 and i fear the fact it’s so slow you have to completely use up each gear to get anywhere because there is no power, ironically using more fuel in the process. I know the 116i is a 1.6 and has more power, and slightly worse fuel economy, but am i right in guessing fuel would work out roughly the same as this is more efficient and has the eco pro mode?

    Well thats all very nice, but is it reliable in the long term? Ive seen some issues with these while working for a dealer, and to be honest, apart from some details, you are just buying a badge. Ive seen electric problems, brake issues, you name it. I wouldnt buy one unless BMW convince me they are as reliable as a Toyota or a Subaru.

      comedyman112 No, I meant the new 2014 A-class. The interior is superb. It looks so nice and modern, much less boring than the competitors'. The materials are also very nice and high quality. Always the same shit with the "slightly offset pedals". The car´s transmission tunnel is designed accordingly to the shape of the gearbox, which is obviously shaped in order to leave LHD drivers an adequate pedal area. Not their fault, only due to the fact these blokes drive in the wrong side of the road.

    This car and its rivals are a bit pointless here in India. It costs about Rs 3,000,000-4,000,000 (£30k, $47k) which makes it only about 3-4,000,000 (£3k, $5k) cheaper than the 320d and the X1. Why would someone want to buy this car for that much money?

      ***** catalogue price is not the same as real price. You can get a very decently specced and motorized new 1 series for way under 30k . (also from Belgium)

      120d is so much faster than the 320 d with 200hp and near 400 nmt why would you not want this 2000cc 1 series unless you need the space and with full spec this is a awsome rear wheel drive

      320d is a better overall package + higher resale value

    • @KrunalRindani
      @KrunalRindani 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my country the prices after tax are identical (£2-£4k difference) and insurance shouldn't be a problem for a person who's ready to shell out £40k+. The 1 series wasn't that popular and so resale value would be even lower. The 320 makes a lot more sense for an regular buyer at least in India.

      +Audrius Bockus right, don't compare them now, wait 3 years and see how dated, stupid and flimsy your mazda 3 will be.

      I test driven both cars, I like mazda's new identity but not comparable to bmw's heritage and standards and quality, you get what you paid for theres no such thing you pay less for a better car.

    iDrive, connective drive, what a great invention to distract you from driving the car. Still, at least when you have a lapse in concentration and lose control of the car you can crash in teutonic comfort. Great.

      Isn't that the case with all car infotainment-systems? The iDrive system is actually better than most in terms of safety, because it's easy too use and it's controlled via the iDrive button/knob as opposed to the many infotainment systems that are touchscreen-driven. Touchscreen really requires you to look away from the road, whereas the iDrive system can be controlled almost blindly once you get a hang of it.

      MegaVector2011 iDrive is really safe to use. You do not have to touch screens and take your eyes off the road. The rotory dial is simple to use, the touch control panel around the dial is simple to use. You master it in no time and you can pretty much work it without ever having to look at what your hand is doing. The high level dash display does not distract you as it is just to the left of your eye line sight, so as you drive along you merely glance as you scroll through the menus, which you get to know quickly.
      Compare that to a touch screen system, and very quickly realise how fantastic the iDrive is.

    This guy really has no clue what he's talking about. In the 2013 review (th-cam.com/video/TsuEFEmoaWA/w-d-xo.html) he said the boot is good as it's bigger than other 'boxier' mainstream hatchbacks; here he's saying the boot is exactly the same as before which is a 'bit small' for its class. What a waste of a review.
