I remember going to races, all over SoCal, in those days. ...Long Beach, Perris, Ming, Mission Bay and many other places. Not unusual to have 20 to 30 thousand spectators, and 300 to 400 plus boats at an event. So much fun!! I remember, much later, there was a VHS tape covering boat racing. There was a guy who summed up the boat racing scene. He said " Boat racing isn't just racing...it's a happening. An event...a reason be together. People come, just to Be Here". Very true!!
Dude, thanks so much for sharing these memories! We grew up going to these races. I'm 56 now, but I can remember some of these boats like it was yesterday. Such great times!
They are still around, You can find them out at the river alot of times around parker and Lake Havasu. I'm still playing with my 1971 Hondo flatbottom.

My family was dragging me there in the early 60's. I have video posted on TH-cam of it. Loved the boats and everybody was positive.
Very cool, I love pulling out my 71 Hondo flatbottom it's alot of fun.
Amazing footage. Would love to see these boats today, if they're still around? Someone needs to start up a Hotboat museum.
