That panel was magnificent. I love stained glass, very clever process.

I was once told by a reputable glazier that red glass is 6 times more costly to produce than any other colour. Red in general is the least colourfast colour in the spectrum and in order that it retains its colour costly silver oxide is used in its manufacture.
I don't know how long we have been producing red glass in this way, but I imagine all red glass in church windows before the introduction of this process will either have been replaced many times or it has just reverted to its original clear non colour....

My mother used to spend all her holidays with her relations at Lyminster and when I was about four, she cycled up with me from Littlehampton for a picnic by the Knucker Hole (no L in Knucker by the way, sorry!). She warned me not to go near the edge of the pool as it is bottomless, and told me that a horse and cart had fallen in and had never been seen again. That was the story they were told as children - that and the legend of Old Knucker the dragon of course. Maybe that’s why I am still uneasy near water! Thank you for another interesting video. That stained glass panel in the church is beautiful.

A totally engaging and interesting video which I really enjoyed watching. Marc English would have liked that small door early on! Some beautiful photography shots too. Apparently the church is Grade I listed the highest appellation.

Here be Dragons! Scaly little fellas aren't they? And that firey breath, bit like myself after a bottle of the good stuff. Love it Richard.

You’re a brilliant visual & verbal story teller, Richard, & this is an intriguing story. You may remember me telling you that although I was born & mainly grew up in Surrey, as a very young child I lived in nearby Poling for a short time (& both sets off my grandparents lived in Littlehampton for even longer) but I was never told about this legend before. Fascinating large tale for a tiny hamlet. By the way, as others have said, while you’re good at lots of things, & I realise feel frustrated at times about being pigeon-holed, today’s & yesterday’s videos really are you at your finest! x

Just come across this video. Many many many many years ago; my Great Uncle and Grandfather fished in the "Knuckler Hole". Didn't catch so much as a tiddler apparently.
St Mary Magdalene church is indeed Saxon. It would have served the local Manor, the Convent and surrounding village and farms. It should have very thick walls too, which made it an all but impregnable place of refuge in times of strife or uprisings.
It's a lovely spot, and I'm pleased that you like it too. You should go back and take Julia; from what I gather, she'd really appreciate the place too.
    Nice video Richard, thank you.

The dragon of Saxon Wessex is white. The last White dragon pennants were flown at the battle of Hastings in 1066.
The Welsh have a story about their red dragon defeating the Saxon White dragon (or Wyrme).
I wonder if that is a Welsh dragon in knuckler hole? Would be interesting to see if there are any bronze objects in the knuckler hole.
Connections and claims to places were often enhanced through committing prized possessions like swords thrown into ponds.
I wouldn't be surprised if the knuckler hole holds more than a dragon's skeleton.

Love these types of stories. There is another dragon tale in St Leonard's Forest maybe you could explore, and a beautiful carved seat. Just been recapping on your In Search of Sussex series "Off the beaten track" and hope you will do more. Love these classic BE films, so good! You go to a lot of trouble to set up the camera and film yourself walking about and so on and I do appreciate how much effort is involved plus editing, but it really makes it. ♡

Our son was Christening was at Lyminster Church in 1976 no dragon signs then. Our house in Lyminster was built on land that had been part of the Arundel Estate until the 1920's so would guess all the land around the Church would have been the same. There were loads of conditions on what we were allowed to do on the land. Great video again Richard

It's Knucker from the Old English Nicor meaning water monster. We visited the Church a few years ago but couldn't find the Knucker Hole. Later in the local pub someone told us it was now on private land

Fantastic site ,story ,and Church ,thank you Richard . Dragons represent Earth Energy , interesting moral in that karmic retribution from meddling with Gaia and her Natural Telluric nervous system ... Marq English would enjoy dowsing here I feel ....as would I ... sadly , a bit far from Cornwall ! 😊 Benedictines seem tounderstand such sacred Earth Energies sites ...they so often crop up at them ....⭐🐉👍⭐

I will live close to such a haunting place in future somewhere in the world where I can stroll around when I want to. The graves are so alluring to me. In the moonlit nights, I would sit in the middle of the cemetery and connect with self. In the quiet of the night in the peace and harmony within. Wow! Me, I, and myself and of course my eternal friend, the present moment. Thank you Richard Sir!

A nice video showing the church and surrounding area. A shame you didn't get closer to the hole, but I'm sure the land owner wouldn't jave appreciated that.
I'm sure others will have pointed out that there is no 'L' in Knucker, but there you go. I guess there are also many different versions of the tale too.
    Best wishes
    Al

What a fantastic church, and a local legend not too dissimilar to Beowulf. It is a shame that the site of the Knucker Hole is out of bounds to us common folk, but at least it hasn't been turned into luxury flats. One of your best Richard ,stay well.

Great story. Its interesting that it took a German, Nicolas Pevsner, to go around the country to document all the buildings of merit almost singlehanded and later with assistants. My old boss was one of those assistants. Hats off to them!

Fantastic video, I made a little documentary on this myself and uploaded it to my Channel. The Knucker Dragon story fascinates me. Not sure if you are aware but there is a public footpath that runs alongside the Kuckers Hole that you can get quite close and can just about see it through the fence. Anyway brilliant video really enjoyed it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Nice film about a church I'd always intended to visit but never quite got round to...it's a lovely interior, (Did Pevsner dislike it?), and I think the glass is attractive too...worth a visit some time...loved the churchyard, which seemed to have a "hallowed" field feel about it...I quite like the rustic beams in the van by the way...rather nice to eat a Ploughmans under perhaps :-}}
    All the best as always

Dear Richard if you attempt a trip to Eastbourne again, please think about the coast road as views over Cuckmere valley and from Belle Tout and Beachey Head are truly spectacular. Keep away from edge as cliff falls frequent especially Birling Gap where houses have gone into sea!

Hi Richard, when you keep the camera and walk around, you look this way and that way and up. Looks a bit unnatural, especially when you are apparently looking up at the sky or even a tree. While I cannot offer any better advice, but I had to say my piece😕
