- That did not go how the BBC expected. When comedian Joe Lycett appeared on Laura Kuenssberg's new politics show, he refused to play the game and instead used satire to roast our soon-to-be prime minister Liz Truss. By doing so, he punctured the self-important Westminster Bubble that presents itself as sophisticated political commentary but is often the inane and the superficial. That's why - unlike most of the discussions on these shows - it went viral.

I wouldn’t worry too much. When you see Kuny sinking her teeth into these people (much like Beth Rigby on Sky) it’s very clear indeed which ‘side’ shes on…. Don’t forget, it is her brand new show and she probably just didn’t want Joe setting a weird tone for it right from the get go. It isn’t Dave

BBC invites a politician to provide her perspective on politics, a journalist to give her views on the news, and then a comedian to discuss the emergencial events in the UK. Who's not taking things seriously now? Joe was just brilliant.
He was excellent. A real 'moment' of TV political broadcasting.
And Keunssberg just kept feeding him effin brilliant almost up there with Grundy and the Pistols

Lycet just went way up in my estimation. LK was really pissed off with him making a mockery of Truss's interview but it's about time the BS stopped and the truth was spoken.

Basically, he tells the journalist that she sucks at her job as after having interviewed Truss, we are still none the wiser. She can't seem to handle the deserved criticism very well.

Joe Lycett ridiculed Liz Truss, The Tory Party & The BBC. Laura Kunesberg wasn't happy because Joe refused to follow her narrative.
I don't know what the verb troll means. I do know that Johnson, with a straight face, told MPs all Covid rules had been followed when he knew it wasn't true and apologised, when found out, although he did not mean it. Lycett was just doing the same thing, saying the opposite of what he thought, with a straight face. It disrupted the format and was very effective satire.

If the pearl clutchers wanted Joe Lycett to take politics seriously, then perhaps the establishment should give us serious politicians who take serious issues seriously.
To be fair, even then maybe he'd not visibly take it seriously anyway.
Let me be the first to ask: anybody watching this in 2035? Lycett hijacked the format, single-handedly fulfilled the programme's duty to speak truth to power, and tore up the typecast role he was obviously invited on to conform to. He's created one of political satire's great moments.

I walk around my local town centre in a northern town. Loads of Boarded up shops, a few bookies & charity shops, drunks, drugged up zombies, shouting & swearing at each other & at passers by, no police in sight, feeling uneasy of potentially being attacked.

Nail on the head regarding it being "a game". Honestly, for a while I can't shake the feeling that it's people like Kuennsberg etc who need to grow up. I remember thinking way back when I was younger reading a history book and figuring out that the way they described political figures in these stupid, arbitrary terms was a tired merry go round. We're trained to think that giving Tories the benefit of the doubt despite hard evidence of their ineptness is a sign of even temperament and somehow 'wise'. It's just not.
I don't know what they expected from him exactly.
It's like bringing a vibrator to the set, turning it on, and being surprised and irritated that it vibrates live on tv.

They are wrong, Sunday morning politics should be an absolute piss-take. If fact, could we not just ban politics altogether on Sundays, why not put the sport on BBC1 on Saturday, and politics on BBC2 on Saturday - I'll be out on a protest somewhere or shopping, and miss it all, and on Sunday we can have re-runs of The Sounds of Music, The Waltons, The Wizard of Oz and Little House on the Prairie, something wholesome and with a happy ending. Why must we polute Sundays with politics, leaving a foul taste in the air, the sound of heated arguments coming from next door, troubled by hours of trying to figure out what a politicians answer really meant, the double-talk and spin, the obvious catch-me-if-you-can lying, it't all a waste of time. Instead I want a reality game, with a chair, and a politician strapped in, lie detector equipment linked to a high-voltage transformer, on a Mastermind-inspired set, with perhaps Laura and Andrew Neil grilling cabinet MPs - where lies have immediate consequences ! Well, you did want comments didn't you ?
