Being British but not having lived there for the last decade, I was also confused by the title haha. I was never much of a pub goer nor drinker so have never come across the name Samuel Smith Brewery. I may have been in one of their pubs but not known it.

I worked at a Sam smith pub when I was 21, Humphrey smith came in to check how the pub was running. He came over to me purposely and ordered a pint of lager which was apparently supposed to be served in a specific glass (the pub didn’t have any of these left as they’d all been stolen or smashed before I started, so I was never told this). Anyway, when I served him a pint in a normal glass, he waited for me to put it down on the bar and then proceeded to scream blue murder at me in front of the entire pub. I couldn’t get a word in to explain myself and he stormed out. A grown man who is a millionaire screaming at a 21 yr old girl in public, after I’d done my best to provide him with professional and friendly service. The punters came over to check if I was ok, but not one member of staff checked on me.

We live in York, just down the road from Tadcaster. Husband used to work there, not for Smiths, in a local business. He basically owns the village and gets to decide everything that goes on there. The footbridge thing was quite real and quite absurd. The town was split in two and Smith just did not want that bridge. You had to head out of town, on to the A64 then back in, huge detour for a tiny place. He's a repugnant man.

I lived in house, he wanted to paint the walls of the flat so he kicked us out for a month. No where to sleep in the meantime, with three days notice. A few stories to add about Humpfrey and his family:
    1. Someone had done a barn conversion and spent £300k to do it up nicely. Humpfrey bought the barn conversion and ripped out everything and turned it back into a barn.
    2. His wife went to the charity shop in Tadcaster saw a pair of wellies and insisted she only wanted to buy one boot out of th pair and only wanted pay half price.
    3. Humpfrey was obsessed with the idea the guy taking parking fees at his car park was skimming. So to help prove his point he camped out all night sleeping on a bench hoping to catch him... he's a millionaire!

I live three minutes by foot from a SS pub. The last time I visited was alone to have Sunday lunch. While I was waiting for my lunch I took out my phone because my gf (who was away on family business) had sent me a message updating me on the health of her mother who was ill. I was told that mobile phones are banned and I should put it away. I was hungry so didn’t tell them to eff off right then but resolved never to visit again. The remainder of my time was spent listening to people talking about the mobile phone ban, itself a joyless and dismal experience. In banning mobile phones to encourage conversation, Humphrey lost a customer; pissed me right off; forced strangers to have dull conversations about how ridiculous the ban is.

I'll never set foot in another. There was one in our darts league. They kicked off because two of our players use their mobiles to manage medical conditions. I mean, how very dare we look at our phones when it's trying to tell us our blood sugar is too low? The use was explained, the medical necessity was explained, and the discrimination was explained when we were told to keep the volume off and go outside the premises to check to make sure no alerts were being missed. At the end of the night it was recommended that both players be left out of the team for future away matches there. And I get it now - they're run by an arsehole that will punish them for any transgressions. I don't care if they're the only water or toilet in 100 miles and I'm desperate - never, ever, again.

Worked in a sam smiths pub for years, those last few years were awful, was in an ex mining village and it was so tiresome trying to enforce these rules, hours got cut after our manager died so couldn't replace him considering he did 16 hours a day 7 days a week at times as he was on his own, and the night he died humphrey came and told us that the rules weren't being followed. Also because we were struggling to find a manager for the pittance he was going to be paying them for the amount of hours they were actually doing we were due to close so he told us we would have to either hand in our notice or we wouldn't get our holiday pay due to us or we would be moved to a different pub till it reopens.. hes not got a clue how the real world works, yes in theory the swearing and phone ban would be nice at times but honestly it's just a futile thing, you either have it or you lose your customers which we would have done if we'd have kicked one of them out for swearing.

But a lot of pubs are struggling and as they are rumoured to own nearly all of their properties as freeholds they are probably losing less money on them by keeping them closed.

I said "Since my living accommodation will be a taxable item, I would like an additional $38k a year on top of that" they looked at me in half bewildered gaze.. that would be about $50k, all said and told. I told them that since my living in that apartment would be conditional to my employment I would not do it for less because if I decide to end my contract I will be forced to find another apartment at probably a higher cost, this was to guarantee I would be able to afford to do so should the time come. I never heard back.

I was also kicked out of a Sam Smith pub for drinking a snake bite and black- even though they served me and the manager came over and asked me to leave for drinking an “illegal” drink lol. That was in York!

Why is it that that Humphrey Smith runs his Samuel Smith pubs like how they were in Victorian Times? Recently, when I went to The Rugby Tavern in Hull, it was empty, yet the other pub chains were not, which was a shame (I do enjoy the chocolate stout that Samuel Smith does) and I do like to chat to people, but it's not surprising that the Samuel Smith pubs are usually quiet or even empty considering that Humphrey has ridiculously silly rules in place like the no mobile phone rule and the no swearing rule....

Also Victorian pubs didn’t have signs saying “no laptops, no tablets, no phones” everywhere like Sam smith’s pubs do, so that rule kinda backfired on him.
You’d also think a traditionalist would have more cask beer selection but no they only do “old brewery bitter” on cask, their other beers are taps.
