Absolutely love the way Annette uses her powers in creative ways. Not just for bouts of brute force and sheer mechanical skill, but also in simple applications like bending metal to make a cross. Even though her powers could've skewered Vaublanc and roasted him like a rotisserie chicken, she chose the most effortless and painful way for him to die.

God, I love that they made Annette not just a real character but a complicated one. She's a powerful mage, but in battle she lacks Richter's versatility, usually preferring to stick with premade blades. She's braver than Richter is, but she's braver because she came from a background where the alternative was death, whereas Richter's bravery got his mother killed. She furiously blames herself for being unable to make snap, impossibly hard decisions because she holds herself up to an unattainable ideal. Maria, Annette, and Richter all start this series as genuinely green vampire-hunters, and I'm really excited to see what heights they reach under Alucard's tutelage.

I loved the connections between her and Richter. Richter has a crisis of confidence because he loses his connection to his heritage. She has a crisis of confidence because Bathory seems impossibly ancient and powerful. Richter makes a connection to Juste and realizes that he's not alone in dealing with the loss that comes with the Belmont mission; he's not the first to have lost someone and that he's not alone. Annete's priestess reminds her that she comes from a heritage that's just as old and powerful and ancient. Like both echo this idea that while vampires may pretend to be the superior race with the powers and their immortality, humanity has its own strength, that we are as strong and ancient as the oldest vampire because we walk in the footsteps of those that came before us both in familial ties (ie, being a Belmont, with all the training and the power that comes with that) and in cultural ones (ie, the knowledge of Ogun's magic inherited from her mother and the knowledge of vodou inherited from Haitian slave culture)
This is something particularly prescient for Annette as it was the practice of slaveholders to strip slaves of culture, to prevent them from making connections to their heritage or from forming new communities precisely because they didn't want them to recognize that strength and slip their bonds.
It's a nice continuation of the themes of the first series as both Trevor and Alucard struggle to find themselves beyond the trauma and confusion brought about by their origins.

Because racists hate when black people are in media, especially when that character deals with the struggle specific to POC.
It does not matter how important the first iteration of the character was, if it's no longer white they ruined it in their view. They elevate the white iteration, grasping at straws to justify why the version with barely anything to it is actually better. If Annette was still white they would treat her changes like they did with Sypha.
They say that they should just make og black characters, but then they would argue that the "self insert oc" is taking up the screen time. It's a lose-lose situation, so you might as well do whatever you want.

This is my favorite scene from nocturne, I also find it fascinating that while castelvania is anti religion it’s not anti god. It clearly has a problem with the abuse of power by organized religious authorities, but god is very real, the crosses do not just scare him, they actively burn his skin, holy water kills them, our heroes use holy weapons.

Indeed. The big branch of the church in their universe tends to be quite corrupted, but the Belmonts are on the side of God , even if they were excommunicated by the church. Yet, God is definitely on their side. Clearly seen that as humans, only their clan tends to surpass the superhuman abilities and they probably have preserved more ancient knowledge than the church it self. Also the Belmonts uniforms, tend to have the cross in the family insignia, holy weapons and as small ornaments .
Off topic,(and definitely no schooling or sounding preachy ), but the best way to write God is with a capital G .As its from respect to Him if one believes that He is the only one.

Kratos and the Doomslayer from DOOM are Mary Sue's in every sense of the word. "Mary Sue" just means "Power Fantasy"
However, woman aren't allowed to have power fantasies and the instant you show off a powerful female character she is immediately written off as a "Pandering Mary Sue" and called "SJW garbage"
It's a lose/lose. You either rewrite an existing character to be more interesting like Anette and get slammed for "ruining a source character" or you create a new diverse character and get slammed for the "self insert OC taking up too much screentime."

      @Metalora 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@jaredknight8838 I'd say part of the reason why people chilled with Isaac over time is for how extremely well written and mature he was. Not only that, he was still very similar to game Isaac in so many ways, loyal to Dracula, worked with him during his war, and wanted revenge on Hector.
Season 2: his loyalty to Dracula is in full force and we have time to connect with him, we can feel how much it hurts him to know Dracula's dead.
Season 3: He leads an entire army, hellbent on avenging Dracula, and killing Hector and Carmilla, yet... he is shown kindness time and time again, through the blind merchant, and the captain. He develops a bit of kinship with Miranda, the old forgemaster. His scenes are deeply philosophical and stick with you. Then there's the mad old magician at the end of his storyline in season 3. While never said outright, we can infer he sees himself going down the path of the magician, alone, mad, and using people for his own ends and robbing them of their will and lives, just like he does with his knife and forgemaster magic.
Season 4: The culmination of his character development, he's pacified after spending time to reflect. He forgives Hector and lets his revenge go, instead choosing to kill Carmilla not because of revenge, but because the world is better off without her. After all is said and done, he chooses to rule and more importantly, live.
Yes Isaac's story changed heavily after season 3, yes his backstory and character is different from the games, BUT! He still shared many of Isaac's story elements and more importantly, was EXTREMELY well-written.
Contrast Annette. Yes, her game counterpart is just a damsel in distress with no other role in the story other than that she's Richter's girlfriend/fiancée and develops a friendship with Maria offscreen. But it's the character that fans knew and thought of for years. Come nocturne, she is a former slave who wields African magic, a revolutionary, and doesn't resemble her game counterpart in any way at all, minus the romantic interest she has with Richter towards the end of the season. She is essentially a different person with Annette's name.
Not only that, her personality is standoff-ish, dismissive of other's pain (as seen when she's angry with Richter for running away, despite the highly understandable reason being this ONE vampire killed his mother as a young boy and it's partly his fault she died.), highly political, and a bit selfish (As seen when she wants to rescue Eduoard and ignoring Maria's and Tera's concerns in a very rude manner).
Yes, a lot of it can be justified due to being a slave. I can't even begin to imagine the pain and absolute hell that life would be, so of course it would affect your personality negatively. Look at the world and people around you. So many have had something terrible happen to them at some point and that affects their personality negatively. It had happened to me too as I had trauma from the past that put a hamper on my personality and my relationship with certain people. When I moved past it, I became kinder and a better person. So yes, of course, Annette at this stage in her life would be confrontational, impulsive, reckless, and just... be a young woman with a dark past.
However, not everyone is going to like or connect with that for reasons that vary from person to person. So of course, people will react to her negatively.
Not only that, real world politics and modern media has affected many people's taste in media and characters in one way or another. So when a character of color comes, with political revolution as a main part of her character, you can't blame people who are tired of politics having alarm bells go off in their heads.
Not only that, swapping a character's race will always, ALWAYS, be controversial. It's inevitable. The only way I've seen to mitigate that controversy is by writing the character well and likable. Look at Isaac and Commissioner Gordon from The Batman (2022) for example.
Lastly, Annette doesn't really change all that much as a character during the season. Sure, she loses Eduoard, forgives Richter, and kills her former slave master... but those are external events happening to her (minus forgiving Richter, that's internal.) Look at her as a person at the beginning and look at her at the end, barely any change. Contrast... pretty much everyone in season 1 of Castlevania (2017). Everyone changed, Sypha began to open up to Trevor and started to respect him, Dracula at first wanted to be left alone, then at the end of episode 1, he issued extinction on all humanity after Lisa's murder, the Bishop had his faith shattered by the demons, the villagers, at first were against the speakers and Trevor, then they turned to their side. The church was mighty and ruling, now their sins were exposed and they were toppled. Alucard, while offscreen for the most part of season 1, went against his father in honor of his mother, failed, and decided to team up with humans to stop his father. His character couldn't be explored much, but there was an anticipation to see who he was and who he'd become, something the next season and there on delivered (minus season 3, hate what they did to Alucard). And Trevor? Season 1 episodes 2 to 4, were all about him, we see him as a drunk who can barely defeat other drunks, we see him with an apathy to humanity, we see him broken and lost... and yet he chooses to stand up for what's right and oppose Dracula and save humanity.
But in Nocturne, Annette doesn't get much change or character development... thus, she is a flat character.
Combine all of this, and that is a big part of why Annette is controversial.

In ways yes, the geometric shape freaks the hell out of them, but vampires are also a type of daemon who are subject to the powers of consecration a kind or miraculous power. Magic itself can be made holy and can be used to channel the powers of existing gods, the effectiveness of the cross and really any consecrated thing such as holy water is given its properties through intent or otherwise prayer. Therfore magicians can channel the energies of beings such as the Christian god in order to subdue and burn daemons such as vampires as effectively as any ordained preist, for doing so is kind of magic in of itself.

I’m not as familiar with Castlevania lore as some of y’all (I’ve only seen the shows, never played the games), so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. But is there a reason the crosses burn Vaublanc? In the first show, Trevor Belmont explains that the reason vampires are scared of crosses is not because of any holy power but because of the way vampiric eyes are evolved. The shape of the cross itself throws off their vision and sends them into a panic. But here Vaublanc is actually burned by them

    Just had a thought
    // Potential Spoilers //
    Not everything is consecrated
So it took me a moment to figure out how iron bars, aside from their geometric disturbance to vampires, held Voublanc at bay
It’s not a stretch to think that the bars (or cemetery) were also consecrated
Or had residual elements to the holy relics in the cemetery
That leaves us to ask how the vampires just sauntered into the church at the end of Nocturne
It’s possible that Erzabeth’s magic or ritual either dampened the consecrated effects of something like a church, did away with them completely, strengthened vampires enough for it not to effect them

I think a good way of looking at this Cross is that both Richter and the Priests are correct. Geometric shapes DO freak vampires out, as we can see with this guy trying desperately to escape in his confusion. But on top of that, Annette, when interacting with the metal, is clearly blessing the metal as well.
The god that blesses the metal does no matter. What matters is that a divine entity is doing so. And with that, it burns the vampires.
Edit: In fact, it might actually be one of the key reasons why the Cross would've stayed in power as a religious symbol in terms of this series, compared to others. Not only is it easy to make, but if you found a blood-sucking monster suddenly freaked out over the shape, you'd DAMN well believe that the cross is something divine and blessed, and therefore by proxy, MAKE it divine and blessed.

The lessons with her talking to the ancestors is a cool touch, but feels less powerul than...say Ricter awakening his Magic. The struggle, the pain, and the epicness. Relearning his heritage, hers...just feels slightly empty.
