In her big scene, you can tell clearly that she was always a mezzo and never a true soprano. Here, you can hear her "negotiating" this music rather than sailing through it. She takes pauses to prepare for difficult passages, skips the written trills, and gets off the highest notes as fast as she can. I think she was one of the great mezzos of her era, but I was never able to buy into her forays into the soprano territory. It just never sounded quite right.
I agree with you. She was fantastic in L'africaine though which is a hybrid role and because of its rarity there's very little to compare her to.

Great to see this with Bumbry. I "supered" for NYCO (on tour in LA) for their Nabucco with Bumbry and remember the thrill of hearing her live!

Thank you so much for my favorite early Verdi opera and with such a marvelous cast. I've heard both Milnes and Bumbry live and love them.
je ne vais vous raconter ma vie mais ..j'ai accompagné ma grand-mère pour qu'elle voit FAUST, Aîda et +++ à Bercy
mais moi déjà fan de Verdi Puccini Wagner Berlioz mon 1er LP avec mon argent de poche : le barbier de séville avec Berganza
je voudrais bien en faire de même avec ma maman (76 ans) mais on a peur de sortir à Paris en ce moment
PARISIEN et j'ai raté ça ... je n'avais pas assez d'argent de poche pour voir ce superbe opéra 10 F par semaine si j'avais fait la vaiselle et mon père pas très cool côté Opéra
que de souvenirs de ma jeunesse: j'ai dû voir toutes les productions montées par Liebermann à cette époque; on ne faisait pas dans la relecture comme maintenant dans la grande boutique aux mains de directeurs, metteurs en scène incultes et d'interprètes qui du moment qu'ils touchent un cachet somptueux se fichent pas mal de trahir un compositeur et son librettiste.
Je lis en ce moment l'excellente biographie de Pierre Milza consacrée à Verdi et son temps; livre passionnant et si Verdi voyait ce qu'on fait aujourd'hui de ses oeuvres il interdirait purement et simplement de les voir présenter sur scène comme il faillit le faire pour les Vêpres Siciliennes à Paris.
Bumbry n'a pas toujours été excellente sur scène, elle avait massacré le Trouvère un soir mais tout allait mal ce soir là: Roger Soyer commençant l'air de Ferrando sur une partition qui ressemblait à du Schonberg; L'orchestre qui s'arrête puis Giovaninetti qui dirigeait incapable de leur faire comprendre à quelle mesure recommencer et s'ensuit une cacophonie monstrueuse, enfin direction à fond de train accelerant au fur et à mesure de la soirée au point qu'un spectateur lui cria vers la fin:" T'inquiète Giovaninetti tu l'auras ton dernier métro!!!"
Qu'attend la direction actuelle pour faire restaurer les bandes des captations de l'époque et les mettre sur le marché au lieu de jeter par les fenêtres son budget dilapidé par des Olivier Py et consorts!

Milnes is the best of the cast. Bumbry is good but not even close to Callas. Raimondi is not a bass.
Raimondi n'est pas une bonne basse. C'est médiocre. Je ne m'explique pas comment il a fait un carrière!
Согласен с оценкой Милнза и Бамбри, но Раймонди бас и справился с ролью относительно неплохо, эта партия написана для редчайшего голоса - колоратурного баса...

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Suliotis was terrible. I saw her Abigail in Palermo in 1974.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1it's a shame Callas only sang the party briefly as a young women.

No she is not! She was a great success as Abigail .I saw her in NYCO's production and she was thrilling to hear live

@@Wotan123456789 Bumbry never had to suffer the controversy about her transition to soprano in Europe that she did in the U.S. she was fully accepted as a leading dramatic soprano there and slowly began to focus her career less and less in New York except for Recitals and Concerts. She did do Nabucco with NYCO and toured with it .Her Operatic focus was mostly entirely on Europe for her last years of performing!
@@joemiller6975 I know. I have seen her a couple of times here; and I know her career quite well - my father in law saw her Bayreuth debut as Venus.
My question was just aimed at that curtain call.
I like her as Abigaille - maybe thought the cantabile in Anch'io doesn't sit very comfortably in her register - but for the rest a regal performance.
