John was a clinician at our college festival. We played an arrangement of his where I had a solo in between his solos. During dress rehearsal I got an ovation for my solo from a few audience members. John proceeded to wipe the floor with me during the concert and it was great. What can one say but laugh and just enjoy the moment.
Incredible technique and facility for a composition w/ such difficult chord changes - I just marvel at John Fedchocks brilliant mind and trombone playing - tenor sax is wonderful as well on thus super arrangement of "Caravan"
Was honored to study under him for a jazz event and concert at Bloomsburg University back in 1996...absolute legend/icon, and as I'm raising two brass musicians myself, I play them these videos and mention I played with John. "NO WAY!!!!"...love it.
People are having trouble understanding the rhythm of this song. It starts out in a 6/8 bembe rhythm, then goes into a 4/4 swing. Beats 1 and 4 of the 6/8 coincide with beats 1 and 3 of the 4/4 time. John Riley is playing an upbeat on his tom during the 6/8 which might throw people off, but the song is rhythmically accurate throughout, except for a spot or two where the horn section dragged a bit.
WOW!!! I am a trombone player myself and ive just started with the whole jazz stuff ive been doing more of the wind ensemble stuff but i really like jazz and that solo is insane!!! i really want to learn that now! and a great song over all the song was good the tbone solo was good and so was the tener solo. Just amazing all the way around!!!
Yep, you're right on the money bonegasm. Carl is one of John's biggest influences, told to me by him in a clinic maybe 4 or so years ago, hes also influenced heavily by Bill Watrous and Urbie Green. He definatley inherits the slide grip from Carl though!
@bonegasm I am actually a Jazz 'Bone player and I hold my slide like that. I have ever since I first started playing. It just feels more natural to me.
@RJFerreiro could have something to do with the fact that the Johns Fedchock and motherflippin' Riley weren't playing on it? (No offence if you play trombone or drums)
obergsson -- you are DEAD WRONG -- shoving a mic into the bell of a horn is a guarantee of LOUSY sound. I'm a jazz sound engineer and when a musician does that, there's NOTHING I can do to make his horn sound anything approaching "good." AND -- Rick solo sounds GREAT in the mix I'm listening to. A soloist should never sound bigger than the band -- when that happens, you lose the band. Mixed as this recording engineer did it, you hear all the great writing and section playing behind Rick, the band wraps around him! I'd call this a very good mix! Rick is down a bit ionly n the out-chorus where he's playing with John, and the sound mixer didn't get him up quite enough to balance with John. That's a small mixing failure, but Rick is working his mic just fine! Jim Brown
Great solo Rick Margitza .. Next time please bury your tenor in the mic and let the sound engineers do the rest. Unfortunately your solo is low in the mix.
@RJFerreiro Because most band directors know nothing about jazz, so they pick out bad arrangements of songs that they have heard of a couple of times...
John Fedchock is a criminally under rated player

Amazing trombone player! Love it!
WHAT IS THIS KIND OF MAGIC?
Rafa Fernández Jazz Brother/Sister...Jazz...
What an incredible line up of musicians. Wonderful band, soloists, arrangement, tune.
So many philistines prowl the world. A very good trombone solo accompanied by a pretty good band.
I saw this new yorker in the middle of nowhere in illinois. he is beast

maravilhosos, que trombonista uauuuuuuuu!!! genial!
Saubere Arbeit abgeliefert!
Soloist's partials on that boneeeee....
He's a god.
The trombone sounds great, I liked this version
Caravan - composer, Juan Tizol. He was a member of the Duke Ellinton orchestra. Composed in 1937.
Love to see this on DVD ! Or the entire concert posted !
The Best vídeo.
GREATS MUSICANS!!!
Great video
Digging the drums in the beginning.
Great solo John!
great band and soloists, I believe John Fedchock played in Woody Herman's band in the 80's.
The bell isn't that small. That's a standard King 2B+ (7 1/2 inch bell). The dark sound comes from the gold brass bell.
Correct I also have a King 2B with 71/2 " bell.
Are you rushing or are you dragging
Some of the darkness is from the bell, but it's also the audio setup that John used - the microphone and amplifier settings.
wow he just got a new fan

SAME HERE!!!
2:03 What a smooth pick up...

world's nicest comb-over known.
Hot Hot Hot! Hip Hip Hip!! Hep Hep?!
muito bom
@Brandawg94 im the only trombone at my school too and i hold my slide the same way
I hold my slide like this sometimes. Depends on if I need a light or heavy grip.
How does one play trombone like that o.0 I’ve been practicing in school for 5 years now and my speed doesn’t even come close to half of his
as ter thanks!
ARRIBA TRU LA LA!!!!
Margitza damn😅
@Jneroes07
Looks like a King Jiggs 2b to me !
Ron Burgundy plays trombone too?
finally the fucking original.........althought the trombone is playing quitly....iwant it to scream!!!
Why is this trombone bell so small? the sound is quite dark....
King 2b+ , its .500 bore as opposed to the Jiggs which is a .490.
Wow, the solos in this are fantastic! does anyone know who that sax player is?
Description says Rick Margitza
@RJFerreiro could have something to do with the fact that the Johns Fedchock and motherflippin' Riley weren't playing on it? (No offence if you play trombone or drums)
блеск!

Jim Brown
Jim Brown
Actually, that's not the case if you play soft into the mic, people like Bill watrous does that all the time.
I wish Rich Perry had played the tenor solo on this...and that's no disrespect to Rick Margitza. I just really hear Rich's sound on this...
Great solo Rick Margitza .. Next time please bury your tenor in the mic and let the sound engineers do the rest. Unfortunately your solo is low in the mix.
is anybody suspicious that somebody fast forwarded that, so that it seemed his hands were moving the speed of light? XD
4:15
no my fucking tempo
Mario Elizondo Get with it.
bob boscarato it's a whiplash reference, albeit, it was actually "Not" my tempo, so there's that....
+bob boscarato its a refernce
Whiplash me trajo aquí
@kapppz 4/4...
.491. Semantics... haha
is he on a 2B? i know he engineered the XO Lightweight tenor bone so i figured he’d be on that lmao
RivasJazz7b9 this video is from 2000. He is currently on the XO horn.
Love the Trombone!! Hate the arrangement
Fan Trombone same, he's an amazing player, but this arrangement disappointed me a tad to say the least
Dat lijkt meer op cacafonie
Why did the version I had to play in high school SUCK so much?
Not on my time.
@RJFerreiro Because most band directors know nothing about jazz, so they pick out bad arrangements of songs that they have heard of a couple of times...
dragging, just a hair
Would prefer to hear the guttural version with plunger mute
ben gurion Then find the recording by Juan Tizol with the Duke Ellington band.
Nah.
boring. when does fletcher show up
It's the band, not the arrangement. (y).
LOL. Jk. Probably a bad arrangement. Some of them are super cheesy.
Non melodic unstructured lotsa notes gibberish solo. Bad jazz.
What do you say...?
