I'm subscribing for the simple fact that you showed the distance of the plant from the window. Thank you!! I always struggled with light requirements since I only have two windows in a large living room.
@@epicgardening Hi there, thanks for all the videos, I watch you quite a lot since I started my small urban jungle. It all started with a dipladenia which made me get more and more plants. I now own a small elephant bush bonsai forest, other succulents as well, got my aloe and snake plants, pothos and dumb cane, fittonia and recently got some ivys as well. My bigest fear now is that there won't be enough light in the autumn-winter as the room in the flat I rent is westerly oriented (probably this is the reason I haven't started this hobby until now). The question is if normal CFL bulbs will work, provided is white-blue light (6-7000 kelvin) or do I need special light bulbs which will cost a fortune and probably won't afford? I would just hate seeing my plants suffer and potentially die because of not enough light.
@@abcd7875 I’ve been using two led grow lights for some of my plants for about a year with no problems except adjusting how high they’re hung as plants grow. The lights cost about $40 on Amazon for a pack of two!
Notes: needs bright indirect light. Report in pit one inch bigger than previous. Enjoys fertile, quick draining soil. 1/3 perlite, 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 peat moss. Water quickly to let it seep in for a second, then water more throughly after a minute. Soil and roots will be more responsive to watering. Report annually. Droopy yellow vines means over watering. They can get long and stretchy so clip right above a leaf node.
Good watering tip. I believe you are the first tutorial I’ve seen on plant care or any gardening video that mentions this simple but very important technique. You saved some plant lives with that one for sure.
Ivy I believe, is a marvelous natural plant for wildlife, particularly birds whom find shelter and cover in it's densely packed leaves. and. It covers for example fences that would otherwise be plain boring. It's a very useful plant indeed. A must for a wildlife garden...
Gosh, you’re just so damn informative. Plain and easy. And have to say, a great voice! I listen to ppl for a living and the sound of you is very pleasing. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge!
I know this is an old, old video however English Ivy and the varieties don't need a particular soil. They really adapt and grow their tails off. Indoors obviously you cannot overwater. Fascinating because yes I see them in the yard is outdoors plenty of water is not a problem. I've seen it rain and rain and they grow and grow. Indoors of course that is the kiss of doom to overwater it like most houseplants stuck in pots.
Thank you so much I knew that they needed a good amount of light but I didn’t really know the other topics that you talked about like the pests. I got a Hedera helix ivy today and I’m sooo excited to be a plant parent. Edit: Thank you!!
In my area is SUPER invasive. In my neighborhood there’s AT LEAST 5 front yards that are infested with ivy. At the moment I’m rooting some ivy cuttings to keep as indoor plants and I have to say they are very slow to root
This is the perfect video. I’m graduating in a month and my university has these ivy plants all around campus, so I was going to take a cutting on my graduation and propagate them in pots at home next to my degree hahaha! It’ll be like a cute memento
My normal English Ivy absolutely loves being outside in Texas weather zone 7B but I do supply it with a bottom watering tray so it doesn't dry out and burn but once temperature get too much ill bring it inside or extremely bad weather i leave mine on my belcony railing and dangle and after a few weeks its growth boomed
“No points for cleanliness here, but is the job getting done? The job. Is definitely. Getting. Done.” 😂 YEEESSSSSSS. I will come back, solely because #relatable
I recently got a variegated English ivy (and a normal one) plant and I don't know why but they're shriveling up (the leaves are turning brittle and hard but are still greenish brown) do you have any ideas about why it's doing that? P.S thank you for the video it was very helpful 😊
look out for spider mites. they are extremely attracted to ivy. give ur ivy a wash with a shower head, or a spray bottle, once a week. it will wash any spider mites off and keep them away since they love the dryness.
Birds eat the berries because they’re a good source of fat for them, if you want to feed birds on your area providing them peanuts are a great alternative to invasive plants like ivy. Either get roasted no salt no sugar store bought peanuts or look for peanuts in a bird feed store/hardware store.
My English Ivy has grown so long in my kitchen and I need to repot it as the pot is too small. Once I take it down, it will no longer "stick" to the wall. Can I just cut off all the long stems and not harm the plant?
I clipped a branch of ivy on my walk off a tree... its purple and I managed to get it to grow roots... I would love to know if it's the same care tips.
only houseplant i've killed. about a year ago, when i first decided to get into houseplants, i got a golden pothos and an english ivy. pothos is still going strong, i've propagated from one vine and the rest are like four feet long, but the ivy... died pretty fast. turned brown and crispy from the center outwards. still have no idea what happened. any ideas? every other plant i have now is fine, the ivy is the only one i've ever had trouble with.
Sometimes I can be sloppy when I repot my plants too 😂😅 One thing I like to do when that happens, is use a small paintbrush to clean off the leaves, then water them in.
hey! Thanks for sharing your tips. My variegated English ivy has been droopy and limp (not yellow like you described as overwatered). I live in Singapore so we have a pretty warm and humid weather. The English ivy’s droopy leaves are driving me crazy! It’s currently hanging on my window and getting a fair share of filtered bright light. How can I save it!? :(
my variegated ivy turned black from the edges inward... not even yellow or brown but black :( didn't see any yellowing on the stem but the branch did dried out and the leaves too eventually turned to crisp... checked the roots and they seemed ok? i could be wrong. granted i live in a tropical land so could it be the sun and not overwatering?
Loved your video! So helpful and informativ, if you have no clue about English ivy. I just bought (more like rescued) one from my local florist and feel well equiped now to let it grow and thrive.
This might be a silly question, but I’m new to planting and don’t want to do anything wrong. My home is covered in ivy, and I’m wanting to propagate some and bring it inside! It seems to love the soil that my yard naturally has - would it be a good idea to take some of that soil when I am propagating and then planting it inside, or should I try a soil from a nursery?
Thank you for explaining how bad it is outdoors before teaching how to grow it. It really is a treacherous plant when it comes to the outdoors. I just pulled a bunch of English Ivy that was webbing all around my strawberry patch and was about to climb my grapes.
Hi! Your video is great- thank you. I am looking to grow my English Ivy in a very well lite room, high up on a wooden beam. My question and concern is about whether it will invade the wooden beam like it would a wall outside as in your video. I feel silly for asking, as you took it from outside, but does this plant act differently in terms of putting out roots then it would outside? Haven't found the answer anywhere so would be great to know. I really do not want to destroy this rental apartment! Thank you.

Do you train the vines to go where you want them to or are they simply going to do whatever they want? I have a variegated English Ivy and want the cascading effect, but some of my vines are climbing upwards. Will they start falling when they get too heavy?
Does it need fresh soil? It might be out of nutrients. Fertilizer helps (more or less depending on the plant), but every few years, fresh soil can be a good idea.
What’s the difference in poison ivy and English ivy? I always see ivy vines growing outside and try to steer clear of them. But I’m thinking they’re English ivy.

Yes, English ivy where it is invasive is very vigorous and can strangle trees with their hefty roots and vines. You need to remove the ivy, pulling it up manually as much as possible. It will take a few years staying on top of removing all the ivy that will try to grow back, but eventually you will get it clear.
Hey there! You'd grow it similarly to how you'd grow other Dracaenas, I have a guide here: www.epicgardening.com/dracaena-marginata-madagascar-dragon-tree/
