I was there, my first fusion concert ever. It was July the 10th, my 21st birthday. In a few days I'll be twice that age, weird. It's literally half my life ago.
I remember getting back home on my bike, it was a hot night with only the light of the Moon to guide me. Umbria's woods with their infinite shapes and scents, augmented by the emotions of a liveshow I had felt way more than I had fully understood, were the best company you could get. I clearly remember, as I was watching the sky while biking on an empty road, seeing my first falling star ever. It gave me goosebumps (and it actually does the same right now, as I'm writing this) and I suddenly realized that, as long as one could get emotions of that level, life was probably worth living. I was so fucking young...
Thank you for posting this. Bittersweet feelings, that's for sure, but no reason to push them down. *:)*
PS: Years later, Matt Garrison told me this was the very night McLaughlin asked him to join his band.

@@maurisal2674 My neighbor in Deerfield Beach back in the early 80's was Jaco.He was difficult because he was Bi-polar,a drug store cowboy, but on good days no one finer as a good friend. His talent amazed me,and just a good friend to my family.l cannot believe all this time has gone by.I was with him the night he was killed by that bouncer in the after hours club where it took place. We went to see Santana and I lost track of him
When I found out what had happened,I was shocked, but not surprised.I really miss him,his family.Life goes on and the music world still sings.

I’m so used to John playing Les Pauls… I don’t remember seeing him play a hollow body. This one’s beautiful and has a delightful, rich tone that really suits his playing and this group. I’m slow on the uptake, obviously. But this is gorgeous, and i thank you for sharing it.
Those BIG smiles from John! Him and Joe playing off each other! Even when it’s formless and slightly meandering, i love that stuff. Love the bassist’s sound, too. 👍🎶❤️

It struck me watching this that one of John's admirable qualities , apart from being one of the greatest guitarists in our part of the universe, is his obvious pleasure at collaborating and sharing his joy at playing with other musicians, going back to to his early days and continuing on, I've been impressed at his willingness to dive in and jam, and show his love of the music.

Zawinul and McLaughlin: two characters. During the 1980s they both veered a little in a classical direction (e.g. the Zawinul and Gulda duos) but I think ever since the beginnings of WR and MO a common thing in their music is always playing off bands with pretty dynamic rhythmic sections. Johnny Mac is still doing that (the 4th Dimension). Maybe Jozy is still doing it in the great gig in the sky. Arto T. is a distinctive percussionist/vocalist. For a while during the 90s, he seemed to be a rising figure in jazz circles, with as distinctive a style as the Brazilian percussionist/vocalists Airto Moreira or Nana V. in the 70s or 80s, but he has, I think, since returned to his roots in Armenian folk music. I first heard him on two World Sinfonia albums.

@Ben Jammin’ So Louis Armstrong discovered America? I didn't know that...!
      #1492 ;-) ;-)
There's a funny anecdote prior to Armstrong's take: one day Mozart received a letter from a fan and composer wannabe:
      - Herr Mozart, what advice could you give me to start composing an opera?
      - Dear Sir, you probably should wait for the right time to come.
      - But herr Mozart, why wait, you started composing at 4 years of age!
      - Indeed. However, I never had to ask anybody how to.
