I had to process this movie for a while before making an opinion on it, but I've come to the conclusion that this has to be one of if not the most unique narratives in a movie ever. Just completely original and shocking. For that alone this movie deserves a high rating. I was a little disappointed at first because I was expecting it to be more like a horror movie, but it truly was incredible - just in its own way.
Mystery here was his dreams (flashbacks), and obviously that his mom is lying about the dad and I feel like it paid off with us viewing that the events are actually real, that his brother was rotting away. We see his brother and feel like the mystery is gone and for any, and I mean ANY other movie that is the unveiling of the mystery. But then we realize that the mother never kept her eyes off him, watching him wherever he went. Even with all the evidence on the table, him being paranoid and afraid of death, he still ends up dying, despite not lying about anything and living as safe as possible, which results in his death. He could have confronted his mother until the end by strangling her and end up being free, but he chose not to, which ultimately results in his death as he did not change. I think it was the only way out of the situation as if he didn't do that, he would have been put on a trial regardless/live being afraid, in the case if he did come to the anniversary. I haven't watched any trailers or interviews before watching Beau, and do not know if Ari Aster wanted to tell convey this message, but that is how I interpret it and I feel satisfied in the way it has ended. I still do not understand the reason why his father is a tool?

This film actually managed to surprise me. Its a shame that it didn’t do very well in the box office. For those that love movies I recommend this flick. A24 is great, Phoenix is one of my favorite actors and Ari is a creative genius. Hopefully the studios don’t see this movie’s financial woes and think that art should be played safe. We can all learn something from this movie. Even if It was a smash hit, the most important thing to get from this experience is the inspiration for all of us to see our own unique vision. Directors shouldn’t see the unique things about this film and try to emulate them. They should see the unique things and be inspired to pursue their own unique visions. Not copying but being empowered to set out on their own paths. We can all learn from that. Don’t let AI and Marvel and all that other dribble ruin cinema.
