    I painted a ”decent” winter forest 2 or 3 years ago and for some reason I put my paints away and until 2 days again hadn’t touched them. I just tried to paint along with Bob Ross’s blue moon and it was absolutely horrendous but I learned a few things so it wasn’t a completely wasted effort.

    Once I bought a pack of super super cheap canvas. I knew they wouldn't be the best quality, but the price was so cheap. They weren't primed at all. I learned my beginners lesson.
    I applied liquid white, put in the sky, followed by some clouds. I planned on finishing the painting the next day. I came back and my sky and clouds were virtually gone. It looked like it was washed off. The canvas soaked up all of the values. Gesso is important when using a thinning medium, lol

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree! Depending on your style...Cheap canvases can be great for practicing provided you gesso them. Good news is now you know.

      - Gesso First - Then let it dry ( you can repeat as many times as you want, its up to you and your style)
      - Then Add Liquid White, ( Nice thing Layer )
      - Thats It.

    I'm not new to the wet on wet method, BUT by experimenting I've discovered how to make my own liquid white. However, I just finished chemo & radiation so I'm a but weak to stand so long & paint, so I've got a painting tutorial I started 3-4 days ago & want to finish that but now my liquid clear is tacky. I'm thinking if I reapply a minimal amount of liquid clear, then reapply the transparent colors, then proceed with the rest of the painting? Will this even work? It's the northern lights tutorial btw if that helps, any?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this will work. I do it all the time BUT you only need to use a little bit.
      I sometimes work in stages so perhaps give that a try.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You dont have too but I would recommend it if you are just starting out. 90% of the time (if you are doing wet on wet painting) You Gesso your entire canvas, let it dry. Then add a liquid base across the entire canvas ( Liquid White, Clear, Black, ECT.)
      I hope that helps you out.

    • @WildCreates

    Hey Wild! My husband has found his hobby and it is Bob Ross painting. He is a beginner. Where do I buy Magic White?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Magic & Liquid White are the same. You can find where to buy it in the video description below the video player.
      There are links to everything I mention.
      Happy Painting for your Hubby :)

    Still confused....why should you apply gesso instead of just using liquid white? I wasn't aware that you needed both before painting, for the wet on wet style of painting?

    • @WildCreates

      I have a few videos that go over this subject more in-depth and give examples ( which I will attach below ).BUT basically gesso helps seal your canvas and gives your paint something to grab, while LW is a base medium that allows your colors to blend naturally on the canvas. There is more to it BUT thats the basics... watch the videos for more info. Hold that helps

      @@WildCreates, thank you for your time and the explanation. I'm wondering though why this gesso prep isn't mentioned on other painting channels, anywhere ( except for here) and why such a important part of the painting process is left out?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think its a few things... it kind of falls under the category of basic and non sexy art knowledge. So most artists skip that step cause they assume you already know about it. OR when you buy canvases they come with a gesso coating already on there ( so again artist skip that step). But like I say in the video, the gesso coating can be sparse or lacking. I try to teach people on this channel as if they know nothing at all and are super brand new to painting. I basically like to cover the basics and build up from there he he he
      If you really want to learn about gesso and how important it is. Just type in how to prep a canvas for painting on YT and you will see tons of videos covering gesso and its abilities.

    Should I apply Liquid White on my gessoed canvas for Acrylic Paintings?

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The liquid white you hear about is for oil painting. ( I have a video that explains it a little better and what its uses are for ).
      However you can create the same affect by making your own liquid white for acrylics. I have two videos on it if you are interested. I will put them below:

    Wouldn't it be easier just to buy a grey canvas?

      Yes - But sometimes people don have access to grey gesso.

      @@WildCreates It's just that Bob used the term "magic" in his earlier episodes and then later on he started saying "liquid", and they looked like the same thing, so I wasn't certain, thanks.
