This place is a different world -" Horton Plains is well recognized for its rich biodiversity, its flora given to a high level of endemism. 5% of species are found to be endemic to Sri Lanka. Horton Plains National park harbors 12 species of endemic birds the following birds are recorded only from Horton Plains" Sri Lanka blue magpie Cissa ornate , dusky blur flycatcher Eumyias sordisa , Sri Lanka white - eye Zosterops ceulonensis and Sri Lanka wood pigeon columba torringtonii . You brought me to my childhood coz I went there once. Too bad never had a chance afterwards as I got stuck with the city life (it's a different hectic lifestyle in Sri Lanka probably you've never exposed to). Be careful not to stumbling off from this precipitous cliff. This view is amazing and worth for couple of hours of hill climbing.

Growing up in Colombo,we did not see much of Sri Lanka apart from when we went on vacation. Our trip to Horton plains blew my mind away. It definitely gives the impression that it has nothing in common with the rest of Sri Lanka. Horton plains used to have many leopards but were shot by British Hunter's in the 19th century. It's mentioned in the Indian epic story Ramyana. Sita's plane landed and the mountain is called Thotupola Kanda. Translated it means the mountain which has the airplane landing site. Also, the oldest evidence of human farming oats and Barley is found in Horton Plains. I was so fascinated by my trip as a 13 year old ,I brought back some of the "alien" looking soil from Horton plains to Colombo to grow a Rhododendron.

Can you imagine if everyone brought home a bag of soil, Horton Plains would be destroyed? In any case, it is a UNESCO site and should be left untouched. As a World Heritage Site it is of 'Oustanding Universal Value.'

Horton plains is the national park at highest altitude in Sri Lanka, It is the origin of main rivers of SL including the longest river ''Mahaweli'. Horton plains (also central highlands) is the heart of Sri Lanka as Sri Lanka gets rain and water thanks to these forests called cloud forests..If these cloud forests weren't there Sri Lanka could have been a dry desert!

If you ever make it to BC, Canada, we have cougars (& bears) that come into the towns and cities but generally stay in the wild. A cougar made my parents backyard (a forest) part of its territory. Then there was the cougar who went for high tea at the famous Victoria Empress Hotel in 1992.
