I have been using the Tru Temper yellow big shovel for about 12 years now. It’s my favorite snow shovel. You’re supposed to use it as a pusher, then push handle down to slide over the snow to dump it. You can certainly shovel with it also. If it’s too heavy, as with all shovels, take a smaller bite.
I use that big heavy yellow one. Use it to push snow by pressing your body on the handle. If shoveling with it you can just push the handle down a little and push it like a sled to where your dumping the snow instead of carrying and lifting it
Yes indeed. Sleigh shovels are designed specifically for that purpose and as a way to avoid bending and lifting the snow. The snow can be tossed off with a quick little jerk of the shovel, or alternatively by pressing the handle forward to tip the snow off. The sleigh action also lets you push the snow onto or over crests of snow mounds when needed. The curve in the base of the shovel makes this easy to do. That curve serves as a fulcrum, and when pressing the handle down toward the ground the shovel tip lifts a little thus making it relatively easy to slide the loaded shovel up the surface of an existing snow mound. It still requires some energy, however a lot less than traditional shoveling. Plus you can clear large areas much faster, with less total effort, and all while saving your precious back.
You have the Mother Load shovel totally wrong! You push it collect a large amount of snow then use it as a sled riding up on the snow to where you want to deposit it. One quick pull back and the snow stays there. NO LIFTING REQUIRED!
Suggestion: make sure the shovel is dry and warm indoors: wax it. Let it dry warm. Then make sure it's the same temp as the snow. Wax the shovel won't stick; you won't be lifting the same snow twice.
6:09 You're using it wrong, dude! It's a shovel SLED! You scoop a ton of snow then you SLIDE it to wherever you want to dump it, then lift the handle and let it slide off, spray the shovel with WD40 to prevent snow from sticking, or do you not even do that with your snowblower? This is the second video where I'm seeing this shovel being used incorrectly! Smh.
Louis, I've used WD40 before but it tends to stain decks or anywhere else you put it between shovels. Agree on the pushing but to your point not everyone does it that way, just trying to convince folks lifting the snow is a bad idea,
Excellent review video. But like you I thought those were the best shovels too until 6 years ago I discovered the Garant sleigh shovel. Buy it and try it, you’ll throw all of these shovels in the garbage.
I don't own one of those big yellow (Ames True Temper) shovels, but I think you may be missing one of its best features -- i.e., you don't have to lift the snow at all. Slide it to wear you want it to go, like a sled, by pushing down on the handle. That's how my sleigh shovel works, and I'm thinking yours might, too. Jim, your correct, but at the end of the run the snow needs to go somewhere. I guess I could push it farther into my lawn but don't want to damage the grass. Want to do a follow on video but no snow in my area so far this season...

Very good point, thanks for sharing.

KathyJo, thanks for the follow up I think I might turn this one into a sleigh shovel.
It helps to wax the plastic, too.

telcomscott, interesting approach. I'll have to try your technique out next time it snows.

Ive been searching for a shovel that wont wreck my back. This video was a great help towards that goal!
Glad to hear my video helped your back. Safe shoveling...

Great idea, what kind of wax do you use? I've also sprayed shovels with cooking oil, that works too.

@@MakeItorBreakItNow you will not be disappointed. Lifting snow is a pastime
Awesome demo. Thank you
no name, you're welcome. Not from Colorado are you?
I really liked this video thank you
You're welcome, ah snow, it's getting to that time of year again...
Thanks was very useful.
You're welcome. Stay tuned for more videos as snow build here...

@@MakeItorBreakItNow Theoretically, you don’t have to push it anywhere new. Just slide it to the place you would have thrown it, ordinarily.
Black shovel for stairs for sure.
DuckNroll, agree. The black shovel is great on composite and wood.
Great
Thanks Desmonde Hoppie, I learned quite a bit making this video. Glad you enjoyed it.
