In “Never too far” I like that she held more notes out on the climatic parts as opposed to doing a bunch of runs. She does runs and styles her voice better than anyone I can think of but her choice to hold the notes with a nice vibrato really felt right for this song.
I’m here! Glitter is a good album. Certainly better than the film. Still went platinum & Loverboy was a hit. Some filler tracks, but the gems are great. Watched a video on YT about a lady who survived 9/11 because she stopped to buy Glitter. A lamb led AWAY from slaughter! Blessed be. Shout out to fellow New Yorkers!
Glitter is so overhated! While I still think it's one of Mimi's worst, that's not saying much cuz she doesn't have a bad album. I'm pretty sure Loverboy was one of the biggest songs of 2001 as well!
“Twister” was Mariah’s assistant, Tonja Twist, who commited suicide in 2000. It was added last minute as a tribute. It’s VERY dark but then again, so was this time in Mariahs life I guess
The Glitter hate was so forced by the media! This is a great album and I love it, Lead The Way & Never Too Far are literally top 5 best ballads Mariah has ever recorded! #JusticeForGlitter ✨️
this album goes for it. such a risk but the creativity and the sounds are immaculate. the whistle in Twister is one of my favorites. it's light and gentle in some ways but also very pained and emotional, and then the cutoff with the reverb omg. it's also the way the mostly empty soundscape seems to fill up all of a sudden in a climactic moment but then dissipates in an instant. it's beautiful and sad.
So vocally this album… is literally outstanding. Ik we mentioned the late 90s-early 2000s period being a “vocal downfall” for her but in the studio, ever since 2001, it’s like she entered a new prime in the early 2000s, and even live. ESPECIALLY in her 2003 Charmbracelet tour. And fun fact “lead the way” actually has not only one of THE craziest riffs in her career (which is the run on the word “over” in the last chorus), IF NOT the best riff in her career, but it ALSO has her LONGEST SUSTAINED belt EVER!! About 20 seconds long!! It’s that very last belt on the word “wayyyyyy” lol. And she didn’t even breathe for that ENTIRE last chorus. That last chorus ALONE makes “lead the way” one of her top 3 HARDEST songs to sing vocally. It actually went mega viral on TikTok like last year or so with videos of it getting MILLIONS of views and likes and it became a challenge on the app lol. People would try to recreate either the crazy riff, or the long belt, or everything. It’s also a fan favorite off the album so it’s an all round win. And u can expect INSANEEE vocals on the next album Charmbracelet (2002) too.
I just discussed this movie/soundtrack on Instagram today! Great minds think alike! Yes, this album is amazing! Needs more recognition! Thanks Jacob! ❤
Butterfly, Glitter and TEOM (ultra platinum edition JAPANESE version) are her best albuns!! Glitter always have a place in my heart 'cuz Never too far made me a lamb! I feel you in "want you" it took me 19 years to appreciate this song.
I will start by clarifying that This is a Soundtrack for the motion picture Glitter(which is set at the start of the 1980s). Not an actual Studio album. Now that that's outta the way. This was Mariah's 1st project with her new label, Virgin Records. At the time the contract made her the highest paid female artist . A multi album deal worth over $100 million. After the unfortunate timing of Glitters release, Virgin Records released her from her contract. In true Mariah fashion she wasn't going to have her time wasted. She sued them and was awarded around $27million for breaching their terms. Glitter (the movie)is a loose adaptation of A Star is Born. I personally adore it. She covers some great 80s Jams as well as sampling 80s beats (Lover Boy samples Candy by Cameo) P.s. for any Top Chef fans out there, Padma Lakshmi made her screen debut here as well in the movie)
Glad you enjoyed Never Too Far so much! That to me is a highlight from Glitter. Such a good song, and perhaps underrated. I do like the Glitter album. It’s got fun songs, beautiful ballads, and she sounds great on it.
JLow stole the concept of "If We" (I'm Fake Remix feat Ja Rule) and "Loverboy" [Firecracker version - Thanks the Rareties] (I'm fake album version) and you can hear the sample of "Firecracker" in loverboy remix when Da Brat delivers a pointed message about "bitches emulating [her] daily." Ouch, JLow!
I'm surprised you liked Glitter, not because the album is bad or anything (I love that album), it's just that it's so underrated, Mariah had reinvented herself, brought a project with a different sound than what she had done on previous albums, and her tone here is simply divine.
YEY CHARMBRACELET IS NEXT!! ❤❤❤ I also love the GLITTER Album!! One of my TOP Albums for sure!! Jlo and Mariah’s Ex husband Tommy Mozarella ( as we Lambs called him) the CEO of Sony stole Mariah’s cleared sample from a year ago. The song sampled was “Firecracker” by the Yellow Magic Orchestra. A Japanese electronic music band. They tried to sabotage Mariah and her career. She had breakdown and 911 happened! CHARMBRACELET was the prelude of her big comeback, The Emancipation of Mimi!! Jacob fasten your seatbelt , you’re in for a wild ride!! Mariah!! ❤❤❤
Didn't mean to turn you on was a cover of Cherrelle song which was released in 1984 and the song was written by jimmy jam and terry lewis and mariah carey also used the same beat for her version of the song which was also the instruments was played by jimmy jam and terry lewis for cherrelle original version now speaking of jimmy jam and terry lewis they was part of the 1980s group the time before they was let go and went on to work with Janet Jackson the most...
The album was released EXACTLY on 9/11, so obviously it was destined to flop sadly. Same with the movie, not only that but she also got diagnosed with bipolar disorder this year and was having “manic episodes”on live TV at times. She was SEVERELY overworked during this time due to deadlines to finish the movie and album and on TOP of that her ex husband tried to make JLO the new Mariah and stole some of her melodies for songs she was planning on making and soundtracks, one of them being the one for “loverboy” so she actually had to remake the song and choose a new sample for it so she was even MORE stressed to meet that deadline, she would only sleep like 3 hours a night or something, and work the rest of the time, while trying to make time for interviews, tv appearances, and fan meetings/signings. She’s already naturally a workaholic but this was to a WHOLE new level and it was deteriorating not only her vocal health but her physical and mental health too. People loved making fun of her during this time period and called her crazy and manic. Imagine dealing with depressive and manic episodes, along with barely sleeping at all and working almost 24/7 while trying to meet deadlines and ALSO getting ur work stolen for other artists AND the entire media and world making fun of u… she literally was su!c!dal at times during this time because of this massive downfall where literally everything in her life went wrong and on top of that 9/11 happened right on the release date of her work. She’s SO strong and it’s a miracle she still pushed through even when it was popular to hate on her. Once the biggest star on the planet, and then reduced to that… thankfully she eventually started dominating the charts again and it became popular to like her again with the Emancipation of Mimi album in 2005. -oh but fun fact in 2018 “#justiceforglitter” started trending everywhere and the lambs got that album to #1 on iTunes 17 years later and she actually performed some of the songs off the album for the first time ever since its release since she hadn’t rlly performed any song from it because of its commercial “failure” back then.
Here again in your comment section to recommend Mariah’s memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” I get that you purposely go into the listening cold, but the answers to almost all of the questions you ask…well they are right there. Especially now that you’re past the 90s, it really wouldn’t spoil much of anything for you.
Divisive comments are probably one of three things: - People confuse the movie with the soundtrack/concept album - 80s-themed music is polarizing for some - Some Lambs hate it because it was a source of trouble for MC for a long time. It didn't come to streaming until a couple of years ago. Glitter is one of my favorites.
a few of them are really awkwardly placed though, they sound nice if she does them in a way that isn't super random seeming and not really sudden but yk what I mean, it needs musicality and not just randomly putting in a whistle where it doesn't fit
@@codywalsh2075 lmao I didn't mean random, I meant random sounding. Although that was implied. Obviously everything was done with a purpose, but things can still be called random if they seem random. I'm yapping but you get my point I hope
I highly suggest you listen to the original version of Loverboy. The version that featured the sample that JLO stole from her… It’s on streaming platforms, it’s called “Loverboy Firecracker”
Glitter is a solid album and definitely top 4 for her. (A la Butterfly, Caution, and Memoirs) Other than the 9/11 part, at this time in music, people weren’t ready for an 80s throwback. She was a few years early. But in retrospect, listening to it now, the album is so good sonically
Glitter is such a great album! Hope you have a different reaction to Twister knowing it was about her friend committing suicide. Also the high note in Twister is absolutely incredible sooo there’s that
I have to say Glitter is not my favorite album of hers but it deserves justice for how bad it did due to the circumstances when it was released. I cant wait for you to hear charmbracelet theres do many good ones in there
This was the album that was released on September 11th 2001 and this was the same year she went on MTV'S TRL and did a striptease plus she had a meltdown and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder loverboy was the only song to hold this album while the other songs did not charts...
Can’t wait until you hear the REAL/ORIGINAL version of Loverboy (on The Rarities album). So much better and smoother than this version. Would’ve been a bigger hit for her.
The movie Glitter wasn't even bad lol At the time, it was still under Sony Music aka Mariah's ex husband, Tummy Motorola. It's obvious that he paid the media for negative reviews. He even tried to sabotage this soundtrack album with the Jlo situation. That's when the beef actually starts. Also, it came out on the day of 9/11
The track listing on this album is questionable, it feels like you're having a bipolar, it changes so fast. Sad, Fun, to cu*ty😭😭😭 a rollercoaster of emotions HAHAHHAHA
Can we make a Charmbracelet prediction- will he or won’t h love it? lol I think he will LOVE it cause he reads ALL the lyrics. Lyrically, it’s her best. Just vocally boring. So dare I say he’s gonna love it even more than Emancipation yet to come.
In “Never too far” I like that she held more notes out on the climatic parts as opposed to doing a bunch of runs. She does runs and styles her voice better than anyone I can think of but her choice to hold the notes with a nice vibrato really felt right for this song.
