Noam, I think your charitable interpretation of Bernstein is correct - or at least it's better to err on the side of charity, here. Peter mentioned requiring more datapoints to come to such a conclusion, but to me the opposite seems more the case. We should require more data to condemn than we do to give people a pass. Oh, and as for psychedelics, I wouldn't recommend DMT as your first foray, even though the short length might be appealing to you. Baltimore schools get MORE money for the total number of students, the poorest grades even considering how watered down, the poorest abilities that graduation, very high truancy, apparently weak discipline, lacking accountability to those parents who truly care, and undoubtedly the highest "diversity" among staff. Do students pay attention in class or just play around and be obnoxious? (I have seen that firsthand in some schools, out of a class of 30, three girls paying attention.) Then, do teachers even have physical safety? How many fights do they have to break up? Do they even dare to break up fights? If there's a brawl in the classroom and they called the principal or security, will anyone show up to help them? Will they get fired if they call security? Will they get fired if they don't call security and someone is severely injured? Listen to Ak Nation News describe urban public schools decades ago. He's in his mid-40s. High levels of violence and dysfunction back then in Washington DC schools.
One top performing student population in NYC is those newly arriving from Bangladesh. Poor skills in English. The COMMUNITY and PARENTS cooperate by establishing Saturday classes for new arrivals. The parents bring their students to Saturday classes where they work hard all weekend on studies. Then they qualify for the top rated NYC schools above other student populations that do NOT follow those patterns of studying or doing that necessary work.
I've pondered on the view of expertise. I think that what defines an expert to a degree is the status others give them through perceived recognition of skills. With that in mind, would someone who is little known but highly skilled be considered an expert? When does an expert become an expert? Is the overriding factor being highly skilled or being well known and possibly popular? I realise it could be both, but at what level?

Denying inherent differences between “the races” is really quite similar to traditional Creationism. It is in direct opposition to the theory of evolution. If humans have existed on different continents in different environments for thousands of years then there will inevitably be important differences between them
Actually, why don't we just go back to Herbert Spencer or even Madison Grant and scientific racism? This essentialist division of humans into 'racial differences in intelligence' is straight-up Fascism.
@@scythermantis Whether there are identifiable differences between ancestral population groups (or races) is an objective question. Has nothing to do with fascism - which is a system of government. Look at how many children of immigrants successful despite the parents didn’t have money and the kids went to public schools. We also need more choice schools.
So the question remains: what are the immigrant students doing that American students aren’t? I think work ethic is obviously a big factor and that’s very hard to improve when people live in terrible areas, don’t have fathers and a mother that doesn’t know how to steer them forward . If the kid is highly intelligent he might take to it better but for the average kid that doesn’t like doing homework?

The real "motte and bailey" aspect of Kamala's analogy for equality vs equity is that she switches between individual circumstance consideration and group based accommodations. Her analogy breaks down if you replace the two individuals, where one has a starting advantage over the other, with two groups where one group has a net advantage on average but there is a lot of crossover among the individuals of each group. Race based "equity" like affirmative action would be the opposite of what she claims it is because it doesn't look at an individual's particular circumstances, but instead provides benefits based on immutable racial characteristics.

Fairness... What if... There wasn't enough food for everyone but a group decided to give the food to the children and the adults chose to be hungry? Is that still fairness?
