The Reality of Rescue | Oz's Story

- Oz was a young and sweet Draft cross that we rescued during the Buy Out mission in June. When he came off the trailer, our team immediately noticed that he had several suspected congenital deformities, including kyphosis. We cringed as we witnessed Oz walk with his front fetlocks touching the ground. (Our vets determined this was either due to severe DSLD or congenital laxity of his tendons). Radiographs were taken of his mouth, neck, and spine and it revealed that his spine was pushing his trachea down. It was heartbreaking to see Oz in this condition, especially knowing that he'd been through multiple auctions. Ultimately, as Oz would continue to grow, the stress in his joints would cause him more pain. His body would slowly break down, leaving him in pain and discomfort. So, our veterinarians decided the Last Act of Kindness was the best option for him. This is the reality of rescue work and why we think it is important for you to see both sides to our rescue work.

This is a good example that the auctioning yard needs a vet present, to assess the horses going through the pipeline. Unnecessary pain to all stock must be avoided. Bless you for your good works.

Horse Plus Humane staff have huge hearts to process the cruelty of stock yards & meat pipeline. I feel if they also rally the public to contact their State Lawmakers that veterinary resources should also be staffed at stock yards & auction pipelines to humanely end the pain. Oz broke my ❤.

The two poor young horses and their stories should be shown to every backyard/irresponsible breeder who bred their horses only because they could or a "foal is cute" or whatever bullshit.
These two babies shouldn't have been brought to this world and the sufferings they had to endure in such a short time makes me so sad and angry.

That poor baby, his front fetlocks were so so sad, not to mention his neck and back. If malformation doesn't cause pain, fine. But this was just so hard to see, as it was obvious how troubling these problems were, and hiw long he must've been in pain, travelling around between auctions over and over. People are truly not empathetic enough in general, how can anyone ignore this, and its been going on for a long time😢. Thank you for stepping in. Quality of life is so so important.

Quite possibly one of the saddest young horses I have ever seen. His image will haunt me forever. The fact that people could send him through the auctions over and over is beyond belief. Something needs to be done to regulate auctions to prevent this type of abuse in the future. He was failed by so many people and yet he still stands. The last act of kindness was indeed the kindest thing humans could have done for him.

Disgusting that anyone could look at this poor horse and not give him the last act of kindness!!! How long has this beautiful baby been in such pain? And you can see him and not do something immediately? What kind of a monster are you? *shaking head* At least he found his way to your rescue where people are human and will not allow his suffering to go any longer!

Its so sad seeing horses who clearly need help, or just need to be put down. Hsve to continuously suffer because no one around seems to care enough to even just do the simple kindness of relieving them of the pain they are in. Just letting the horse suffer.
It was honestly so sad seeing the condition oz was in, and seeing how calm he was being despite how much pain and how scared he must've been. I'm glad that he was at least given some love before the end, I'm sure those last moments were the nicest he experienced in his life. It is nice knowing you save horses from those auctions and such, no matter what condition they may be in.

OMG those poor souls, that broke my heart, to be so young with all those issues. As a horse owner and lover, to see them treated with such disregard for their breeding and well being is a gut punch. At least you have them dignity and let them know some gentleness and compassion and they didn't die in a slaughter house, they went surrounded by caring people. Thank you

I once saw a situation where a foal was born on a farm with a severe wry nose and neck deformities. Because the young daughter felt sorry for him, the foal was not put down and was instead used for the family to make money online. The foal ended up dying before he was a year old, and the family had made a lot of money off his ailments. I honestly saw it as a scam. There is no reason not to do what's right and put the foal down so it did not suffer. Humans can truly be cruel.
That is infuriating. Perhaps they were desperate for money. I wish someone could have intervened, helped the family to other financial resources so they could let him go. As for the daughter’s feelings, life is hard. Do the right thing.
Humans do that a lot with dogs and other animals as well. It’s tragic and cruel.
@@ES11777 agreed. Now if a vet checks the baby animal and says the deformity does not cause pain or disruption to the things animals do that cause them to thrive, it doesn’t matter how deformed the baby. Of course regular vet checks are necessary for all pets and animal companions.

So thankful for people like you , these poor little guys will no longer suffer. The auction places should not allow these animals to be sold like this, if the original owners had any form of basic decency they would have humanely put them down , not put them through this by trying to squeeze a few dollars for them.

It saddens me to see these horses in such pain, I felt it and could see it in their eyes…..thank you for taking care of these beautiful horses, and bringing them relief of their suffering, they are beautiful in their own right…..it’s too bad that they have had a short painful life without someone to truly love and respect them. But some things can never be fixed to grant quality of life, as with these two horses, inbreeding is the result of greed and uncaring attitudes towards all animals and whatever else is considered worthy. That poor baby.. THANK you for doing what is right humanely ... Sadly I volunteered for a rescue many years ago that would "keep them alive no matter what" for the donations. It sickened me and turned me away from volunteering .. maybe backyard breeding but I doubt it.. I see a lot of dumped horses from high end breeders especially in the race industry obviously not this case as he's not a thoroughbred BUT lack of care is disgusting... thank you for giving him peace

Heartbreaking that their owner couldn't be bothered to get them vet care right after they were born. The ultimate abuse is sending them into auction after auction in this condition of discomfort and confusion.😭😭

Hi Twanie the photos you took of the horses please show them to authorities why the auction can't take in horse this bad BUT if they came to you and your team might be able to take care of their needs or the act of kindness not let them suffer I love everything you do I promise I'll be a member ATM my daughter and I have few problem s with the ex threatened to harm us so when we move and settle I'll became a member and thank you all for looking after the beautiful animals lots of love too you xxxx
