Believe it or not but those freeze plugs are really casting drain holes. Your block will crack before a plug pops.😮 Cams today are not what they used to be. Made offshore with cheap steel and a lack of good hardening will result in lobes going south. I have gone through 2 solid lifter cams in my 70 Z/28 that I bought in 1981 from the original owner, using the best oils for break-in and running with plenty of ZDDP and no more. My last rebuild was back in 2012 with a roller cam/lifters in my LT1. The flat tappet days IMO are long gone. Spend the extra $ and go roller, you won’t regret it.😮
@@johnmilner7603 sand casting core plugs” were not made to pop. Just for removing sand after casting. Sometimes you get lucky! If you have dual springs. Remove the inner for break in. Replace after all is done.
Excellent video jack ! So what do you think the Horsepower of this engine will be ? Also didn't know there was a Chevy Red. learn something new every day
The dogs are awesome, just lost mine a little over a month ago. Have you done a shop tour before? I'm new since I found the channel thru NNKH. I'm curious how you got the engines in that room, is there a larger door?
@@anythinggoesgarage5943 I'm concerned about my 390 out of an 1972 F250 I"m having done. The guyvdoing the work is quite competent but he's saying a new flat tappet cam will be just fine. Would it be much more involved to do a roller rocker on my engine?
love your channel and love how you work in does engines keep it up god bless you

Do you think that what seems to be rash of flat tappett cams being wiped out is due to improper break in, or poor materials the cam is made out of?
@@rickallen6378 its been a material thing lately. Machine shops have lots of issues even on the dynos. Many wont do a flat tappet only roller.

@@rickallen6378 might have to machine the heads for roller tockers. Otherwise should not be an issue putting roller cam in it
