      I am actually having a hard time transitioning to stylized from realism because I don't understand how to distill that realism knowledge. I ALWAYS take my sketches too far, add to many values etc. I am back to the basics training and Sinix Digital painting tuts helped me figure out where I need to progress to distill the realism. But I am in the 'mid-life' crisis period where everything sucks because I have to relearn how to proceed with big shapes instead of lines and details. It's so painful!

    This is great advice. Just last night, I finally got around to teaching myself the major surface muscles of the body and IMMEDIATELY, I could feel so many options becoming available. Anatomy is so key to stylizing characters. It's so exciting to have all these muscle masses providing opportunities for cool shape language. And anatomy is just ONE part of realism! I think a lot of young artists get caught up trying to skip from pre-realism to post-realism, whether out of impatience or intimidation.

    1:05 this is by far my favourite way to explain an art style. It’s all about the decisions you make in translating reality into your work, what features you think are important and need emphasis and what can me removed or simplified. Your decision making process is based on your personal taste and thus your personality will naturally translate through your art even if you don’t realise it.

  • @KarolineTheEmpath
    @KarolineTheEmpath ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So here’s a brief summary of what Sam explained is to be able to draw in a specific style you need the foundations of drawing, and fundamentals of art. Simply, you need to exercise or improve your art skills in order to develop your own art style. You can’t only draw anime or cartoon straight away you need make sure your skills are improving, so focus on improving your drawing and painting skills in that way you can develop your own art style.
    Thanks to a lot of artists including SamDoesArt, and RossDraws I already found an art style I’m interested in, and it’s called expressionism it’s an artist technique or style created in the 20th century I think. The point of expressionism is to convey or express emotions through art, and to do that is paying attention to shape, color, and light to convey emotion in your art. So I’m hoping the brief summary helps.

    so true sam!!! I try to practice realism even though my art is really stylized, and I've found it helps me so much :) I would 100% recommend it to anyone else. it might look wack at first, especially if it's your first time, but I promise it helps you grow, and after a bit of practice at it you can pull out your realistic style on people and surprise them lol

    Just a year ago I was hellbent on not learning anatomy. I really thought I could get away with it. But now I’m very excited and happy to learn anatomy and proportions and realism. Yes! Even realism! I love it and I think once you guys get motivated to learn, you’ll find realism fun too.

    Okay but this literally sparked my progress with art. I wasn't really paying any attention to realism, just trying to do it because I didn't know how to do anything else. But I'm really focusing on anatomy and I can already see the difference in my art. This video was literally my saviour

    this single handedly inspired me to draw again. I'm currently in my artblock episode. and i've been kind of frustrated coz I hated my style. I draw realistic portraits. but I hated it so much that i wish i started as a stylized artist. but this showed me that this is actually a good foundation before i find my stylized art.

    I change *mayor things* in the process up every time.

    I feel relieved, i was afraid that i've been stuck too much into what i see and into realism, because it felt more natural to me, i was scared i'm never gonna have my own unique style. Your analogy about student's notes of lectures helped me very much to understand what style is actually. Your content is so valuable, and your art is amazing

    I commented on one of your older videos a while back basically bashing your lack of realism/how stylized your art is. But now I love it, and this is me apologizing. Basically, I was naive in the other direction where I was like you can ONLY do realism and not style. Balance is key as I've found. Love your content and art and you inspire me to make my own art better!

    So true, even academic art in my opinion is stylzied, but then impressionism is the only time when an artist truly paints what they see, and not paint what they know about what they're seeing, I just tried stylized art for the first time a few months ago and had a blast.

    That's kind of crazy because I knew that without anyone telling me. Back in school someone in my class told me he liked to draw anime and asked me which my favourite style is. Of course I answered: I don't know but I alredy thought you can only expand your art in a stylised way you will first needto know how the real things look like. And now I watched this. Thank you so much for ensuring me!

    Thank you for this, Sam! I’ve struggled with the feeling of “Omg I need an art style, every new piece I make looks like it was made by a different artist and there’s no consistency, maybe I’m just doomed to not have an art style and only draw realistically cuz my mind doesn’t know how to stylize” for a long time now. The parts at 9:26 and 9:52 really resonated with me, when you mentioned remembering to have fun, don’t burn yourself out, how realisim a “curse” I’m trying to break free from. But maybe I need to embrace it more! I just gotta be patient with it. After I fully understand realism, I can learn to stylize and find my own way!

You have just sealed my thoughts about it! From drawing anime, I am now starting to learn realism, to strengthen my foundation. Still a long way to go but as they say: "Success knows No shortcuts."

    I extremely agree with everything that is in this video. I think one of the main reasons that pushed me away from realism was that a lot of non-artists (sometimes some artists do this too), is that they put realism on a high pedestal as if that is the only type of "correct art". But to be honest, the best thing I started practicing this year was to utilize realism and stylization in tandem. Meaning, whenever I sketch in my book, I try to do some realism studies, and then when I wanna go do my commissions or just create a character, I use whatever I learned from realism. I think it's always better to learn both at the same time because you can create such a stylized piece but also because your knowledge of realism is also strong, you can tell that the artist making it too, is very skilled!

    i think i'll try this out. I'll draw a realistic portrait, then exaggerate features like the eyes and expressions, use high contrast lighting and stuff to try and stylize it, try different approaches and see what i can make out of it. Best advice ive ever had for drawing my own artstyle. Thanks Sam.
