    That last vid pissed me off. Popped up or not, why the heck is he just stopping and not trying to run it out anyway? You get paid all this money, and don't finish the play, just in case it dropped like it did? Geesh. And it's my own damn team.

    I've never understood the rule inconsistency between letting the ball drop and "intentionally" dropping it. In both cases, the fielder is intentionally letting the ball hit the ground, so why is the batter only out and the ball dead in one of those situations?

      The rule is specifically that the fielder is not allowed to deliberately catch and then drop the ball (or knock the ball down with his glove) in order to deceive the runner. The main difference between the two is that in the latter the runner would either already be on the trailing bag or breaking back towards it, as the fielder is not only set to make the play but also had the ball in his glove. It's considered less fair to the runner than letting the ball just drop, as he should have a chance to advance.
