    I read Eric’s book roughly 10 years ago while working in the U.S. for a German company. Traveling to Germany regularly gave me the opportunity to visit Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s parent’s house in the Berlin area. I scheduled a visit months in advance and when I arrived I found the previous group before me never showed up. So I had the entire house to myself for a few hours. I sat at Dietrich’s desk where he composed many of his thoughts. The combination of the book, a visit to Berlin, and sitting at Dietrich’s desk have impacted me significantly. I’m still amazed at Bonhoeffer’s commitment to his Christian belief; to the point of death. I’m currently reading his book The Cost of Discipleship. Thank you Eric for writing Bonhoeffer’s biography. Thank you Bonhoeffer for being so obedient to Christ. Thank you God for the opportunity to learn more about you through those that have loved you so much.

    I went to see the film with a group of young adults from my church this past Saturday. I love Bonhoeffer, and getting to share his story & his essence was the highlight of my week. I truly belive that his story is particularly relevant for this day and age. My generation (Gen Z) has so much to learn from him. May we hear what the Holy Spirit is speaking to us through his testimony and live in accordance with what we hear.

      I just got out of it about 20 minutes ago stayed until the end of the credits, what a powerful film that shows how we should be the church Bonhoeffer is not the first to stand up to such Injustice and such evil but he won't be the last because he did with the Lord told him to do shows how many people wanted to save his life because they thought he needed to continue to preach but he took action betrayed but then he took action he was supposed to go to America he went he went to England but when people told him to stay where he was because they cared about his safety he said no this is part of what God has called me to do and so he saw our father's business through until his life ended at the execution block.

      @ Bonhoeffer was alone in his faith because the church was corrupt then, and today the martyr fight is still alone because the Catholic and Christian churches are more corrupt than ever in history.

    I had attended private Bible school for ten years. One would think someone as brave as this, a martyr, and a man who had more influence on the Protestant church since Martin Luther himself, would have at least been mentioned. In all my decades of living I have never even heard of this man's exploits, let alone his name. For the establishment and a comfortable church, he was a troublemaker. A shaker. He disturbed things that did not want to be disturbed. What's more he could have had lived a comfortable life. He could have lived his days preaching fire in the West, instead he went to fight the devil directly. And it cost him. The cost of Discipleship indeed. This man is my new hero.

    I ordered 3 books. 2 of them Eric’s book and one by Bonhoeffer himself. They will arrive this weekend and I look forward to it. I came into the faith 5 years ago and I have experienced tremendous peace like I’ve never knew existed. And I’m not talking about the quiet life or no drama per se. I understood what stillness truly means. And someone on another channel earlier today said a lot of Christians don’t realize they wake up with the stillness they didn’t notice they have and he calls it a “prayer coverings.” It’s where God protects the fervent believers. I said to myself “Bingo!” So Bonhoeffer understood that very well and was ready to give his life and go home for Christ. Truly remarkable!

So if it takes a while for the DVD or stream to come out you will not really miss anything. Another good read, on the topic, is Eric's book "Letter to the American Church". It is his comparison to the current state of the American church's reaction to current events in the U.S. to that of Germany in the 1930's leading up to WW2.

    Chaplains in the military are also supposed to be a conscience, but their positive influence has been reduced over the last 20 years by pressure from political appointees and the falling away of citizens in general. While the official Lutheran Church has been applauding Adolf Hitler, Dietrich Bonhoeffer has been practically the only protestant theologian opposing national socialism. In the night of the broken glass in November 1938, thousands of jewish homes, businesses and synagogues have been burnt and 30' 000 jewish people been killed. This disgusting event had been coinciding with Luther's birthday. "This has been the most beautiful posthumous birthday present, which the German nation could present to the reformer" has been officially declared by the leaders of the Lutheran Church. Bonhoeffer has been an exception, a true hero, perhaps a saint.

    If Im not mistaken,Bonhoffer coined the phrase,"cheap grace", that basically referred the the collusion of german protestants with Hitler.The Seventh Day Adventist church throw the pharse cheap grace around with cheap abandon today,describing most christains because these christains don't keep the Saturday sabbath.Adventist describe the social gospel as second rate.Its highly ironic because during WW2 the german Adventist church colluded with Hitlers regime on a institutional level.

    Just watched the movie in theatres. This is a movie that needs to be seen in 2024. Are we willing to open our eyes to truth? Are we willing to come out of our silent closet of Christianity in the face of rampant wokeness? What is the cost of our faith? Some may ask why Bonhoeffer insisted on going back to Germany from the safety of the US: God granted him the courage to do it, to set an example of going 100% so that we may be encouraged to go 1%.

      Bonhoeffer was the only woke one under thousands who blindly followed the right wing dictator Hitler. Today, Bonhoeffer would have fought against Trump and fascist America! WHITE CHRISTIANITY IS NOT A SUPPRESSED MINORITY! It's amazing how many Americans don't view Trump as a criminal. He is literally convicted and charged. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. His speeches are full of empty promises, cheap rhetoric and irrational statements. How can so many people be this ignorant. I see the same in these comments. How can someone like Metaxas say such bullshit like "atoms the size of softballs", "atoms where a lot bigger these days". Literally not true. And still everyone is blindly accepting his words, same as Trump. America really needs a good dose of critical self-determined thinking. AMERICA MAKE YOUR OWN OPINION DONT LISTEN TO ANY LEADER, INFLUENCER, PASTOR, PREACHER, BIASED NEWS FEED! BUILD YOUR OWN OPINION BY READING INDEPENDENT MEDIA, ALWAYS MORE THAN 2 SOURCES!!! RIGHT NOW THE WORLD LAUGHS AT YOU FOR BEING THIS IGNORANT. AND BECAUSE OF YOUR POWER ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY ITS JUST ABSURD!

  • @GeorgeJosephFamily
    @GeorgeJosephFamily หลายเดือนก่อน

    undoubtedly, Bonhoeffer was a hero and outstanding Christian example that followed in the legacy of Heb. 11. But some statements in the film do not square with Scripture - for instance the insinuation that one can fight with evil. The Bonhoeffer in the film appeared to suggest that in some statements. A recent Christianity Today article provides some insights into these areas. The legacy of Bonhoeffer must retain the completeness of his message on the Cost of Discipleship - such costs does not include the role of the pastor in an assassination attempt, no matter how evil the dictator. There is no Scriptural warrant for this, and God will not allow such rulers to exist beyond the time He has decreed for them.

    Will Metaxas make corrections to some of the factual errors? For example, Bonhoeffer was never an assassin? Also, Bonhoeffer wasn't a conservative Christian as per some of his letters, which Metaxas conveniently ignored in his book.

    • @yarrlegap6940
      @yarrlegap6940 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Let's correct your post: bonhoeffer was a extreme far-right conservative Christian activist - by today's standards. No Christian today would join an assassination plot against a mass-murderer. In fact, today, Christians are so tepid and lukewarm that many are more afraid of mean tweets using insults than they are about mass-slaughter. bonhoeffer's story is about the conversion of a socialist coward into a Christian hero. It's not about defending his poor choices, bad decisions, or swallowing the zeitgeist.

    • @mchristr
      @mchristr หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      In his book Eric Metaxas doesn't call Bonhoeffer an assassin but rather details the family ties to the plotters, with Bonhoeffer involved on the periphery. Neither does Metaxas label Bonhoeffer a Christian "conservative" as we would understand the term today. The book nicely traces Bonhoeffer's theological growth from a pure academician to a true pastor who sees faith as something that must be lived out daily. As one who has read the book several times, and has a theology/philosophy background, no corrections seem necessary.

    It's a shame that Metaxas and others have hijacked Bonhoeffer in the service of a milder form of the very ideology Bonhoeffer resisted and which murdered him. He was on the side of those who suffered, not on the side of those who inflicted the suffering. He was on the side of truth, not lies. And he believed, in Lutheran terms, in the theology of the cross, not in the theology of glory. He did not believe that the Church is called to seek power, but that the power of Christ is made perfect in weakness.

      After having read several of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's books (The Cost of Discipleship, Life Together, Letters and Papers from Prison), plus the Metaxas biography, I've never seen Bonhoeffer as a "socialist coward". He grew up in the cultural context of an academic Christianity, when the German Church at large had lost lost both its vitality and the practicality of the Gospel. It would have been much easier for him to retreat into the university and remain solely a theologian. That he didn't speaks volumes of his courage.
