  • Ukraine's spring offensive could be on the horizon, but are the country's troops truly prepared?
Some reports have framed this spring offensive as Ukraine's make-or-break opportunity to recapture territory held by Russian forces.
When asked about Ukraine being re-supplied in time, military expert and Royal Armoured Corps veteran Justin Crump told Forces News that "overall, Ukraine is supplied pretty well".

I sometimes worry that the western media might be putting too much pressure on Ukraine for this upcoming offensive. There may be a fear in Kiev that if they're unable to deliver a big enough victory this Spring that support from their Western partners may dry up and that could lead them to push their troops too hard and cause them to make mistakes that they otherwise wouldn't have made. I think it's important that they know that we'll support them no matter what.

From our armchairs we must not lose sight of what an offensive means. It means deaths, disability injuries from artillery, mines and the other horrors of war. Many will die, a great number will suffer life changing events. The very future of Ukraine dictates that Russia must be evicted from occupied territority righfully belonging to Ukraine, but never forget the sacrifices being asked of these brave men and women. Our role is to support them in this noble endeavour, but also to help them win the peace too, by shoring up the post-war defence against Russian aggression and the aiding the post-war future of Ukraine. These sacrifices must be honoured with a better future for Ukraine and Ukrainians.

We saw last year that Ukraine is capable of both strategic and tactical surprise. The Ukrainian command spent months directing attention to the Kherson region while building up large forces in the Kharkiv region undetected. The Russian command responded by transferring 40,000 of its best troops to Kherson weakening their lines in the north.
When the Kharkiv offensive began it was highly successful eventually taking back thousands of square kilometers. This forced Russia to divert reinforcements to the north and Ukrainian command then shifted its efforts to Kherson eventually taking all the territory west of the Dnipro.
We can expect something similar now. No matter what is claimed the AFU is about to do, they will likely do something unexpected and force the Russian command to react then take advantage of that.
Russian command at all levels is far less flexible and competent than that of Ukraine. This factor hasn't been as telling in a grinding war of attrition as has been the situation in eastern Ukraine since the fall.
When operations become much more fluid and dynamic the advantage will be on the side of Ukraine. And if this results in a large scale breakdown in command and logistics of Russian forces in Ukraine the AFU advance could be very rapid indeed.
They could possibly take back Crimea and then proceed to evict Russian forces from Donbass. It all comes down to how well the AFU offensive is planned and how well the Ukrainian command reacts to changes on the battlefield. And the AFU command has shown over the last year that it is far better at actual combat command than the Russians.

      @@MondoChow777 Except they didn't.
Russia has basically wasted all the offensive power it has and got almost nowhere.
Bakhmut isn't Kyiv. Russia doesn't suddenly win the war if it takes Bakhmut. But its leadership has been acting on that basis.
Ukraine didn't need to carry out much more costly offensive operations over the winter to keep Russian forces from building up for a spring and summer campaign.
Putin allowed his forces to keep assaulting into some of the most heavily fortified Ukrainian positions in the whole line. Where they took very heavy losses.
The while time Ukraine has been building up its own large reserves, it has been drawing down Russian forces.
The only question now is, how will the Ukrainian command choose to take advantage of this.
And they will let us know by their actions when it is too late for Russia to do anything about it. Like they did last year.

    • @MondoChow777
      @MondoChow777 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@dougcoombes8497 The Loss of Bakhtmut is not a literal end to the war but it is a technical end to the war logistically and internationally for Ukraine. The sacking of Kyiv wouldn't have been a literal end to the war but it would have been a technical and logistical end to the war respectively.
We can extrapolate from facts and figures while trying our best to remain objective that if Russia has lost significant manpower so has the Ukrainians regardless of the figures with total reserve strength as an afterthought for either side furthermore.
Ukraine did not need to expend significant amounts of resources to launch a winter offensive, yet they did spend a significant amount of resources protecting vital logistical crossroads and Bakhtmut, in turn being expected by western military advisory to launch an offensive sometime this year. Neither side will be spared any failure, victory or losses moving forward especially since Russia has been gaining ground over the past 8 months regardless of pace, material and manpower losses.
Ukraine also allowed thier forces to hold a strategically insignificant hardpoint such as Bakhmut, accurimg significant attrition rates instead of falling back west/north-west of Bakhmut into the defensible country side bordering the city. East of Bakhmut the Russians had to advance through relatively flat and open terrain grinding the last 4 months of thier advance to stale mate levels compared to the previous 4 months of advance leading up to the flat and muddy terrain. Since entering and flanking the city, that tactical advantage and the strategic importance of the city was neutralized, hence the subsequent fall of the city.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, the Russians have been amassing a large force east of Bakhmut and according to western intelligence that force is 500K, 300K of which are front line support and 175K of which are combat manpower. Both sides have been amassing and both sides have been drawing down each other's front line manpower, what matters is how many yards of the front line has moved and in which direction in any given month.
Most of the fighting is now focused in the east. For the Ukrainians the crossroads west of Bakhmut cannot be allowed to be fully utilized by the Russians, and for the Russians they must exploit the fall of the city with a breakthrough if they are to secure a logistically viable advancement further west. A surprise maneuver from either side regardless of timing will be extremely costly now specifically due to the extreme focus on the southwestern side of the front, maintaining ground on a successful offensive or counter offensive relies not only on its logistical viability, it also requires a secured flank as the pocket rapidly advances.
A failed offensive on the Ukrainian side offers the risk of a final blow to it's finite manpower and moral as opposed to a failed breakthrough by a mix of Russian regulars, Wagner and conscripts. May I remind you that most of the fighting and the subsequent sack of the center of Bakhmut was by Russian Wagner convicts and Russian conscripts? The forces amassing east of the city are mobilized Russian regulars and reservists, better trained and better equipped, they will not be seen as expendable.

one thing is certain, we as workforce will not be told what weapons, systems and distractions that can make the difference are currently dilivered to ukraine to not allow the russians to prepare properly. Especially important is how the northern border is protected while the ukrainian troops are conducting the operation in the east.
We havent heard much about the ukrainian defensive capabilities in the north and west for very good reasons, but its actually more important than the offensive capabilities of the ukrainian troops gathered in the east. The ukrainian offensive most certainly cannot succeed if these troops have to pull back to kiev oblast for stabilizing the defense, even if the tactics used by the ukrainians in the east were groundbreakingly smart and effective.

I'd go for more "fires of unknown origin" in Crimea: systematic attacks by special forces in different parts of Crimea to make life for the invaders very uncomfortable, and see what happens. 200 Scarlet Pimpernels attacking here, leaving explosives there, without being caught. The Ukrainians already have showed they can do it. Just as a STEP 1 to see what Moscow does. Does it take punitive actions, if so of what kind etc.

Ukraine to date has lost 2 whole armies of men and machines. .hence the so called counter offensive, with limited trained men and a miss match of machines causing a total logistical nightmare for the ukrainians. and only 10 recovery vehicles pledged to cover an 850 mile front with repair workshops and mechanics 1000km away in poland. The russians again are happy to give ground to create another trap much like archimosk or the final khurson offencive when losing 2 whole battalions of men and machines trying but failing to take the city and 700 men killed on the move to take khurson while the russians had retreated from the city and hitting the advancing forces with shelling and air power but its ok you can still virtue signal by changing your profile picture on facy. .
