- In this video I go over how I installed the Motobilt Jeep YJ wheelbase stretch kit. This took me some time but hopefully this video will help anyone else looking to tackle this job. Thanks for watching

Great job! I’m going to be transplanting a 1963 Scout 80 onto a YJ frame. This kit addresses the the wheel base issue perfectly. Beats a cut/splice/ fish plating the frame.
I want to see more Yj videos!

Excellent video. Motobilt should pay you for the content- or make their own. I have watched your video several times. (yes, I am slow). I am starting the cutout of the rear cross-member. One question: Did you regret removing the rear cross-member to get the clean lines? Knowing what you know now, would you still do it?
Hahah I really appreciate it! This video was a little rough because I was just starting and getting use to being on film. I enjoy doing it so I don’t mind if they use my content. As for your question, I don’t regret cutting it out. I feel I was able to do a better job as well as fix other issues. If I had to do it again I’d do the same thing. With the front full width axle kit what did you do to accommodate the full width rear
Luckily for me I just stripped the axle of all factory brackets and it allowed me to center the axle pretty easy with new spring perches

I actually haven’t gotten to the shocks yet but I was going to try and outboard them and tie them into the cage tie-ins. If I can’t do that I’ll make custom mounts off the inside of the frame.

Your welder, are you using gas with the mig? novice welder myself
Hey Matthew, yes my welder is using a shielding gas. It’s a fairly cheaper welder but using gas will definitely yield better results then a flux core wire. I’m hoping to do a video on how we set up the welder and got it to provide decent results even though it’s 110 and I’m very inexperienced. Thank you for watching!
can the genright tire carrier be installed?
I am unsure on how the genright tire carrier mounts. With enough fabrication anything will fit lol but I’m just not familiar with that product to give you a solid yes or no. Thank you for watching

Do you have to change the drive shaft for this?
Yes more than likely you will need a new driveshaft to accommodate the extra length. The stock shaft may reach but as soon as the suspension travels the splines will separate and the shaft will come apart. Hope that helps and thank you for watching!!
What driveshaft ya use? How much you have to add
I’m actually still currently in the build process so I haven’t gotten to the driveshafts yet. This project has escalated way beyond what I imagined lol but when the time comes I’ll be getting custom driveshafts made and I’ll do my best to get that whole process on video as well 🤙🏻
Suppose I install this kit and install XJ leaves but leave them the original way so it won’t stretch my wheelbase. Think that would improve the ride any due to a longer spring?
This kit is actually designed to be used with XJ springs. Leaving the frame side mounts and using an XJ spring will stretch the wheel base still because of the extra length on the XJ springs. As for improving the ride quality, I can’t give an exact answer due to all the variables like quality of springs and shocks.
@@altered_life I think the XJ front eye to center pin length is the same as the yj but the rear is way longer and Putting the XJ spring in “backwards” is what gives the stretch. I could be wrong though
Gotcha, I don’t have much experience with the XJ springs but I think Motobilts website has some decent information regarding this kit. I kept the shorter YJ springs to hopefully help with axle wrap since I went to a spring over setup. I’ll still be doing a anti wrap bar but time will tell.
@@altered_life ah I gotcha. I’ll have to look a little more into it. I had an XJ with a 4 1/2 inch Rubicon Express lift on it, and it rode exactly like stock. My YJ with old man emu 036 springs rides like a log wagon so I am between using the xj springs, or just converting it to a TJ style suspension
Yeah leaf springs are simple but can also be tricky. If I knew my build was going to end up where it is, I would have just went to a linked suspension from the start. For now I’ll rock the leafs and upgrade in the future
What happened to the fuel tank skid plate? My 92 has that exact plastic tank, but it's setting in a skid plate, with two straps running across the top of it. I mean your's doesn't even have a shield between the PLASTIC fuel tank and the exhaust.
Mat Helm I’m not sure actually, I don’t think mine ever had a fuel tank skid or maybe the previous owner removed it since it was just a beach cruiser. My Jeep was definitely lacking protection in a lot of areas but I’ll be taking care of that hahah. Thanks for watching!
@@altered_life I'm sure it rusted out from under the tank. You can get them new repops for between $200 and $300 bucks. And you'll probably need the rubber mat the tank sits in too. But be sure and dod what I did, which was drill water weep holes V grooves. And I put 3 vinyl strips (1/8" thick x 2" wide) between the tank mat and the skid plate in hopes that the mat could no longer trap water.
Mat Helm you’re probably right, I had rust issues in the rear of my frame so more than likely that’s what happened. Those are good tips but I won’t be putting the stock fuel tank back in. With the stretch kit I wouldn’t be able to fit it back there so I’m going to be putting a 19 gallon fuel cell up in the tub behind the seats.
After doing the stretch where did you mount your shocks?
I haven’t gotten to the shocks yet, I still have a lot more work on the Jeep before that point but I’m going to try and outboard them and tie them into my roll cage mount. I still have a bunch of trial and error to do first. I plan on covering it all in a future video.
Ok. I might be stretching my yj and gona use the motobilt with xj leafs. Just trying to figure out how im gona mount shocks again. If you come up with anything let me know. Thanks for the the cool videos

After welding them end plates, you totally could have burned in the bumper. Weld done!

What did you do about the rear body mount of you cut it off?
I actually just went without them. The two body mounts that are on the rear cross member seemed to be plenty strong to support the back of the tub that I felt I didn’t need the far back ones. My other videos of making my floor shows a a lot closer of how I mounted the body. Thank you for watching!
@@altered_life no problem! I'm starting to build mine now pretty much the same build motobuilt front and rear, 5.3 ls, Dana 300 and 4l80e. With a 14 bolt and dana 60 king pin. Just not sure if I want to tub it kinda like you did or not yet. Looking forward to some more videos 👍

What springs do you use with this kit?
Bobby Sullivan the kit is designed to use XJ springs with the stock frame side spring hangers. On mine I decided to relocate my frame side spring hangers back so that I could use YJ length springs.
Just curious why you chose to use the yj springs an not use the longer xj springs? Also how much lift on the springs did you add? Getting ready to do a 1ton swap to the wife's 94. Getting ready to order this from motobilt this week.
Next time you video some welding, try videoing behind a welding hood, we would see better.
Jr Parson thanks for the advice I’ll see what I can do next time I’m recording. Unfortunately I did just do a bunch of welding for my latest YJ video and didn’t see your comment before but thank you for the suggestion and I’ll see what I can do.
