As a Type 4 (spending a LOT of time INSIDE my head,) I would much rather DAYDREAM about achieving my goals (and you know those daydreams include long & detailed conversations I plan to have with individuals I’ve yet to meet. 😂)
Oof. 4w5 - I do both of those things compulsively if I don't control myself. Dreaming things up forever without actually *doing* anything, and creating system on top of system on top of perfect system to prep for all future possibilities. Dreaming and prepping are tripwires if I'm not watching out for them.
The 4 is definitely true. I recently restarted keeping a journal, and then fell off for a few days.😜 But I caught myself and now I'm back on it. It helps me to schedule the things I want to work on into my day/week. 😊 I liked the skit for 4 too.😅👍
When you gave advice for type 4s, I felt like you were talking to me directly. I really do get all hyped up about my goals, then quickly lose steam when reality sets in and the initial excitement wears off. I like your suggestion of making goals a habit. I’ll try that. Thanks!
I’m a type 5 and this is definitely true. I have a minimalist mindset but get overwhelmed by the thought of actually organizing and decluttering. I have multiple books on the topic, and have watched many videos about it. I finally last week started a full reorganization and declutter of my kitchen and it feels amazing.
Once again, I resonate with both 4 and 9. I don't usually set goals because it requires so much effort. Also, I don't always feel passionate enough about something to set a goal. That being said, in alignment with the 4, when I get a burst of inspiration I can really get passionate about a goal. I can do it from anywhere from 2 days to 2 months. It goes well until I get bored of it or I start to forget what inspired it in the first place. Then I go back to being goalless. A viscous cycle. I need to set a time each day to work at something, even if it's only for 10 minutes, but I also feel like I need accountability, and as I live alone, that's hard to find.
"I'm either doing it correctly or I'm failing." As a type 1, it's nice to be seen. And Imma need you to quit spying on me Abbey :-) UPDATE: I'm actually a type 4 who mistyped as 1 (but type 1 is my stress / growth path so the comment is still relevant). But since authenticity is important to me, I had to include this edit :-) Type 4 skit hit me between the eyes, I'm LITERALLY fighting to keep my writing schedule these days. As a 4w5, I either get lost in creativity (type 4) or research / analysis (type 5).
Type 6 is the truest. I'm a 6, and my anxiety is HIGH. My biggest anxiety is that literally everything is going to kill me. This fear was greatly increased by watching final destination. So my goal was to basically never ride a rollar coaster ever again. So my family went to holiday world for my biggest sister's birthday, and I chickened out for most of the rides. The only "ride" I rode was The Mayflower (I was scared in there so much I couldn't actually scream) but I thought I was never gonna ride a Rollar Coaster there. True to this video, I did not succeed this goal. I rode the The Legend and screamed throughout the ENTIRE thing.
My husband (6) is the healthiest person I know; however, he’s SURE he’s going to drop dead of a heart attack! I’m at eight, so I’m kind of wondering when already😂😂😂😂😂
I am a 2w1 and I really relate to both of them. It starts with something distracting (usually a friend who wants or needs something) and then ends with the Type 1 reaction.
Yes ,as type 3,i found that working on one task at the time increases my productivity so much, with increased quality, but while i find my self more than one or two goals at once i can't complete any of them on time
1w9 - I definitely used to beat myself about not completing my goals. However, I also have learned to give myself grace. I also always choose too many goals and struggle to be consistent with any of them. My type 9 side also makes it hard for me to push myself in certain goals. I often make goals too easy or give myself too much grace and therefore I don't reach my goals very fast (if ever).
Abby our family loves your videos sooo much. It has helped us understand our adult children and in-law children..wow Im a type 2 and every time u talk about 2s I get teary (and I hate getting emotional) but I feel like oh.my.goodness someone understands me..there are other people like me.
I feel so called out as an 8. Lol at first I was like which one is the 8 and then I realized the one in the robe sounds just like me. I'm sure I've said the same exact thing before lol!
Also a 4 (w5) and Same.. I will say that finally realizing I likely have ADHD has at least made a lot of my life make so much more sense! Is it the same for you? In my case it doesn't help that I also have a couple of chronic illnesses that have gotten worse in the last few years, and left me with much less of the emotional and mental energy needed to develop or use coping strategies. How about if either of us comes up with a brilliant solution we come back here and share it with the other!?
As 1 I can't agree more to what you said. What is funny and sad I know you are right that done is better than perfect BUT inside me there is a big NO 😂🤣 If I dont do sth the best I can I feel like I should just not do it at all. Thank you for your words, maybe they will be helpful during wars with the inner voice 🤣
Oh the joy of starting on a new project...followed by the boredom of going through the humdrum. I guess all 4s are feeling outed by this vid (I'm not a 4 and even I'm feeling SO outed). As usual, great job Abbey! You have nailed all the types!
Hi Abbey! I love all your videos but I was wondering something. Do you remember doing these wing videos? I think you stopped with the 4 wings. Are you planning to do wings for types 3, 2 and 1? Really looking forward to those.
Type 1 was intense 😆 I see progress as getting closer to my goal and it gives me the feeling I'm doing something that works for me. That's how I met my weight loss goal years ago. 😀
I'm a 2w3 ENTP and this is pretty true, but I can see 1s and 3s to be very similar, because they both want to achieve in life, so choosing between wing 1 and 3 is very hard.
Thank you for the video Abby ,as an Enneagram type 4 I found it was so insightful, cuz I wondered why I get so inspired, but never get things done. Also I wanna say that when you explain each Enneagram type it's much better, you do it so well and I can understand why I do this or that and how can I help myself ❤❤❤
I think i am type 3 with 2 wing, and i think that i like to work on my goal right after i wake up in the morning, do i can feel productive and i enjoy my achievement at the end of the day
I liked the withdrawn/assertive/compliant grouping angle of this video! :) I'm not a 6 (though I thought I was one for a while; feeling torn between both the individualistic novelty seeking of 7, and 6's deep yearning to belong in a group as a panacea for isolation and anxiety, was perhaps a clue that I'm a 4) but maybe finding a support system, app/online community, or habit buddy would work well for a 6 as well? Also, as an aesthetics driven 4, I find romanticising my goal with celebrities/historical figures, literary and movie quotes & images (tumblrish moodboards lol), as well as a pretty visual tracker - combined with the structure of a tiny daily goal as you very rightly said - helps a lot with motivation. For Type 2 helpers, I think it would also help to consider how taking care of your own goals and mental health can benefit others (especially those closest to you). Just some suggestions to add to your already brilliant vid :)
Ahh I love this. My type 4 spouse has been stuck so this will help. And type 8 here - now I know why I’m an all of nothing person 😂- good point on changing from a results perspective to a process.
yeah it gets underestimated that 7s can actually be quite effective when they want to. My mom is a badass business lady these days, just one that wears more silly colorful clothes compared to her 3, 1 or 8 counterparts xD Not sure that the accountability partner thing would work for me, tho, because its like... ugh, another obligation/ unpleasant conversation to have if I screw up. I've given it a try & it didnt rly do much. (Might work better for a social subtype I guess) that said the "make yourself do a little bit every day even if you dont feel like it" strategy that you name for 4 *did* help me somewhat in the past; & another tip that works for ppl that do not respond that well to external motivation is that when you randomly get the faintest urge to do a thing (like clean etc.) always follow it, like doing the thing while the motivation is still fresh instead of sitting & thinking about it cause that rather keeps you from a physically mobilized state, you 'use up'/'tamp down' the charge of the impulse or feeling by going into thinking/planning/analyzing mode. I have by no means cracked the secret to making yourself do stuff though
Lol you're definitely right about the 9. I still have trouble putting myself first. Except when my 8 wing comes out lol. My mom's a 6w1 and that's what I love about her. She can go from super serious goal-oriented to fun-loving like that, so cute! ^^ But also the 1 wing. She wanted to lose weight and everything was ruined when her goal wasn't met!
i dont think your mom can be a 6w1, mostly because wings are the next or previous number (for example 1w2, 4w3, 9w1, etc.) but maybe it's on her tritype or similar (idk much about it so i cant really help)
My spouse is a 9, and my Bestie is a 5, and well... I've definitely poked them both about their goals on occasion. Once, I even threatened my 5 with taking the books back that she'd borrowed if she didn't commit and finish the thing by a certain date 🤣 It worked!

Sometimes I feel like I learnt to be disciplinated (which is really good in the results, by the way, I leartn from my E1 boyfriend xD) but, at the same time, sometimes it just doesnt fell "natural"... Dunno xD Oh, and I've felt so reflected in E8 actitude. Any other E4 out there who feels the same way? Abbey, I love your videos, thanks :)
