  • Neel talks about his journey, from being born in Louisiana to starting college as a mechanical engineering major wanting to work within human space exploration! In it, he covers his background, what life experiences pushed him to consulting, and how he pursued it. You'll probably find that his background is not too dissimilar from yours! He also lays out a couple pieces of advice at the end that can be useful no matter what you're trying to do in the future.

    I really enjoyed sharing my story with you all, and I'm happy to share more about my Bain (either internship or full-time) experience! What video(s) do y'all want to see next?

      Hey,
      Thank you for the videos so far! Really liking the content and efforts.
      Can you do a video about how to create hypothesis at the last braches of our structure(from context and clarifying questions)? And how to ask for correct data to test them.
      Thanks!

    What a great video! I can totally relate, I have a tech background and transitioned into MBB as well. I loved how you said that you had other exciting plans if consulting didn't work out. For me that was the single most important thing in the interview, because it took the pressure off.

    Hey Neel, Great video! Being an engineer myself, I was questioned heavily in my Bain interview in a european office for the shift to consulting. I failed to answer this question convincingly. While listening to you, I realized the reason for this was, well storytelling! Thanks for this video. I am gonna go back and work on my story now for applications season next week, Haha!

    Great video Neel! As an engineering undergrad, I share a lot of the same thoughts that you had going through college. Quick question, would you say the process for pursuing healthcare/biotech consulting is similar to the process you went through? Or is there more emphasis on background/experience in the industry prior to applying. Thank you!

    Hi Neel! Such great content! I'm in EE and just discovered the consulting industry. Do you think consulting is more of "you can do it if you have certain types of traits" or "you can do it if you are interested and willing to hone the skill"? Could I also know your thoughts on MBB's data scientist role vs. management consulting? Thank you so much!!

    • @neelandrohit6490
      @neelandrohit6490  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And good questions (Neel here)
      1). I think consulting is a combination of having certain traits (being generally intelligent, decent with numbers which I'm sure you are given EE, decent with people, etc.) and having the grit to hone the skills. But I'd say the grit to hone the skills is probably more important. Being good at casing is definitely the biggest think from what I've seen.
      2). I think MBB's data scientist roles are amazing! And honestly, I've even contemplated transitioning (although I 99% won't). But yea, these data scientists (at least with Bain) are staffed on heavily analytical projects and work within a normal team. So they have pretty similar jobs / experiences to the consultants, but focus more on getting and manipulating massive and interesting data sets rather than maybe managing client relationships or other more consultant-focused things

    Inspiring story. Your scholarship demonstrates the ability that firms are looking for despite the non-target university background. Also, your early preparation for consulting in university equipped you well with consulting skills.
    I recently graduated from a semi-target university and just stepped into industry as a management trainee. Given that I had no consulting experience before, could you please give some advices on what path I can take to get into tier 1 or tier 2 consulting (assume that 1. good preparation for case interview has been done and 2. MBA is out of option)?
    Enjoyed your video and hope to setup connection with you if you do not mind ;-)

    • @neelandrohit6490
      @neelandrohit6490  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Feel free to add me or Rohit on LinkedIn! You can find out links in the description of our newest video (Q&A one).
      As for getting into the tier 1 or 2 firms and that MBA is out of the option, I'd say to look for industry hire / off-cycle recruiting opportunities. I think these may be more common among generally larger firms (so, McKinsey or large tier 2 companies will more likely have more of these spots than Bain).
      Your options also largely depend on where you are in the world, so try to seeing if people in your region have done a similar path and do some LinkedIn searching to find out!

    Hey do u have any plans to get a masters degree in business MBA in the near future? Also any plans to change your industry like to tech etc from consulting since it is extremely tiring and stressful.

    • @neelandrohit6490
      @neelandrohit6490  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rebecca, I'm personally a bit unclear about getting an MBA in the future (and if I do, if I'll take Bain's sponsorship package).
      I'm more so pursuing several China-based Masters scholarships (they are called Schwarzman and Yenching). So if I get those, than I'd be getting a China-related Master's and then maybe think about an MBA after if it still makes sense
