I call BS on Julian Fellowes comment about needing an expensive education to understand Shakespeare.
Yes, It was written for Royalty but it was always meant to be performed for the common man.
What I like about David's performances is that it may not always hit the mark, but the emotion and the nervous energy he conveys is mesmerizing.
The plays weren't even written for strictly royalty. They were written for the everyman with humor and gore and mostly hit or miss education on history (Richard III being more pro-tudor propaganda than actual history really.)

What an arrogant condescending snob Julian Fellows is. Tennant, Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Richard Burton and many more went to non fee paying schools. This despite organisations like the RSC, that massively favour casting those from the upper classes. Not that I would class myself anywhere near to these greats, but I founded a touring Shakespeare company that played to between 500-1000 people night on summer tours, doing full cast professional Shakespeare without a penny in funding. We had consistently fantastic reviews and built up a massive support for our work. I think it is becoming even harder for the working class actors to break through with many funded companies like the RSC and the BBC favouring public school actors and directors.

ONE QUESTION, if You don't mind! - i.e: HOW IS THIS ACTOR?? (on stage I mean!). I heard he's VERY GOOD and proffessional. Saw "bits & pieces" of his role as "Richard IInd" and - gotta give it to him - I was damn impressed! Although just a SHEER AMOUNT OF TALENT won't "put a stamp" on your success among the CRUMBLING - FREE FALLING - "standarts" of hollywood. Maybe he should reconsider and STAY in the U.K., but that's just my personal opinion.

Have you seen it? Because I saw the recording and he didn't just look like a middle aged woman, he also played the role like that. Absolutely brilliant!
So you need an expensive education to understand and perform properly Shakespeare. Allow me to write just two words in reply - Richard Burton.
Shakespeare being a practical, practicing man of the theatre, always offers a good watch. But the obscurities of 500 year old language, and the complexity of the poetry, are much elucidated by higher education. The kneejerk reactions to Julian Fellowes' remark are just inverted intellectual snobbery.
Glad I dodged that bullet of awfulness - Tennats a worthy heir to Patrick Stewart when it comes to glutting the world with actorly pomposity
