iKamper on Frontrunner Quick Release Tent Mount Kit- Does it Rattle? | Real World Test

    We have been searching for a better way to mount our iKamper Mini rooftop tent into our Frontrunner 3/4 extended roof rack.
    The factory mounts that came with the tent are not recommended to be used on our frontrunner Slimeline roof rack.
    Due to the roof rack's design, the factory mount makes the tent rest on the rack rails/lip, creating a "creaking" sound off-road. We know because we still used it anyway despite the manufacturer's recommendation. Filming with a creaking sound spoils the natural sound, which doesn't work well with our style of content. Moreover, the high-pitched sound will drive you crazy on long road trips.
    We also have the frontrunner table under the rack, and we do not leave our Roof Top Tent for the entire year as some people do. We like to do a combination of a ground tent on the weekends and RTT on long trips.
    The minimal rattle we experience is a tradeoff we are willing to make for the convenience of removing our rooftop tent whenever we like.
    For us, the Frontrunner Quick Disconnect rooftop tent mount kit is the perfect solution for our Overlanding style.

    Did you had success by adjusting the fit in the end? I have the same problem with them and I already have the plastic version of it...

    • @maxdexpeditions
      @maxdexpeditions  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I did. I installed the hook angled away from the latch so both pull away, making a tighter latch.
      It's impossible to eliminate all the noises, especially in a mount with moving parts. But I got it dialed down so I could barely hear it in the vehicle on rough terrain. I also found out that some of the noise is coming from my roof rack with all the bolts and nuts. I tightened everything and applied lithium grease.

    • @maxdexpeditions
      @maxdexpeditions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We still like it and have been traveling around with this setup since. I have re-adjusted it by installing the mount on the RTT on a slight angle so that the hook pulls away from the latch creating a tighter latch. Rattles have significantly been minimized, especially off-road.

      Hello. Yes. I am happy and still use the quick-release mounts because we like using the table under the rack. I Definitely would recommend it.
      It’s impossible to eliminate all the noise since there are too many moving parts. But I got it dialed, that I barely hear it in the cab with windows down. I also found that some of the rattle is coming from the roof rack. I tightened the bolts and applied some lithium grease.

    Hi, Has Front Runner said anything about fixing the rattle?

    • @maxdexpeditions
      @maxdexpeditions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. No, I did not contact them. Some customers did in the past, and I think they blamed it on installation. Too many moving parts -there's always room for rattle imo.
      Mine does not rattle anymore, even offroad. If it does, I can’t hear it. Slight whistling at highway speeds, but that’s a different issue. What I did was I reinstalled and angled the mounts away from the hooks. I also found that the rack also creates the rattle/ creek in the video, so I re-tightened those and applied fluid film on the bolts.

      Hello, thank you for stopping by, Mark. We are no experts. If you have the same Ikamper just like us- MINI 2.0 or 3.0 version, you don't need additional support for the quick-release mount. I know these because I called frontrunner and was told I don't need any additional hardware. But, if you have the regular 2.0 (not the mini version), then it is best to contact frontrunner.
