When I became a Christ follower 2 years ago I was given the gift of music. He gave me the ability to play guitar, understand and read music and sing (never knew how to play before). Because of this gift I said I would always use it to praise and worship. Now I’ve written about 10 worship songs and play classical and acoustic guitar. I’ve never had a lesson. Yes, I’ve had to practice a lot to play well, but my ability and new skill is no doubt a gift from God. 🙏🥰🙏🥰 I’m so thankful for this gift as it’s my way to praise and give thanks and its awesome therapy.
I believe God blessed you with the gift of edification, that gave birth to your musical talent praise the Lord keep seeking the Lord on how to learn & share your gift, and you may have more than one.
@@holdthelineministries3640 There was a reason for the gift of tongues in Paul's day which does not apply any more .If you study the whole chapter and remember he was correcting the Corinthian church, then you will see he is saying understand what you are saying verses 6 to 23. Study verses 19-21 verse 21 starts ' In the law it is written .' this is a quote from Isaiah 28. the prophecy about tongue speaking ,which says it is a sign to the leaders in Jerusalem .This means the new tongues movement is nothing to do with the original Biblical tongues ,which was a sign to Jewish leaders . What was the sign about? languages, This is what happened at first at Pentecost and where ever Jews were present at the start of the church, as the sign was about God speaking in gentile languages ,and the church preaching to the gentiles .It was the last warning to the Jewish leaders before, as Jesus said, the city and temple would be destroyed, which happened about 30 to 40 years after .
@@wendymitchell8245 Everything that we know and have is a gift from God. The earth, the heavens, and everything in it, was Gods and was given to us for praise and worship and to bring others to Christ. This "natural talent" was given to Samuel Castora. Samuel Castora has the God given gift to "play guitar, understand and read music and sing". Call it as you will, but when push comes to shove everything we have and can do is a gift from God.
Thank you for the clarity. Up until now, I thought praying in the spirit and speaking in tongues was one and the same. It all makes sense. The Day of Pentacost was when God poured out His love on the Gentiles by allowing them to hear the Gospel in their own language. Wow!
Wrong the upper room was full of devout Jews from every nation under heaven he was given the holy Ghost to the Jews first then to the gentiles Jesus said I come not for the gentiles but for the lost sheep of the House of Israel
Andrew Farley is a wonderful grace teacher, but he is way off on this topic. The Gift of Tongues is not just for speaking to gentiles in their own language, that is not scriptural. "For he who speaks in an unknown tongue DOES NOT SPEAK TO MEN, BUT TO GOD." For no one understands him, although in the in the spirit, he speaks mysteries." 1 Corinthians 14:2 There it is, tongues for the individual believers, to edify the believers, building them up in the faith, are not for speaking to people of other languages, but to God. "The Promise of the Father," the baptism in the Holy Spirit, is for all His church. There are "various" kinds of tongues 1 Corinthians 12:28, and the gift of tongues for the believers, is for who have RECEIVED the baptism in the Holy Spirit by faith, believing and speaking by faith . Andrew is confusing the tongues used for prophecy with the tongues that build up the individual believer (how do you edify and build up others in the Lord (see Ephesians 5:19) when you yourself are not edified?), rejecting the clear scripture that there are various kinds of tongues, and the gift Paul refers to in 1 Corinthians 14:2 is where the believer speaks not to men "BUT TO GOD." God's gift is a prayer language for you, a grace gift accessed by faith (Romans 5:2), between you and God. If there wasn't a separate baptism in the Holy Spirit for those who are already believers, then why would Paul ask the Ephesian "disciples" in Acts 19:2: "Have you received the Holy Spirit SINCE YOU BELIEVED? Denying the gift of tongues is placing your experience and belief system above the Word of Christ.
Yes, speaking in tongues, and speaking in the Spirit is the same thing. Sometimes if God wants us to speak in a known tongue to edify someone who speaks another language it can come Putin a known language which we don't know. That is more rare though. Only in certain circumstances.
This is fantastic! My wife and I were involved in the Charismatic-Pentecostal Churches for over 40 years. A few years back I remember hearing someone give a tongue message, something they had done several times before. But then I realized this woman was saying the same tongue every week, but the pastor woukd interpret and it was always a different message.... It was like the day I discovered that Santa wasn't real either (when I was like 8 years old!) We left the Pentecostal Charismatic church.... The journey out was not easy; we had to find a church that preached the Word, minus all the theatrics we were used to in the Charismatic-Pentecostal Churches. So, I've been saved now for 51 years and I must admit, God has been faithful even in the midst of my ignorance. This is a balanced word....and very much appreciated.
Sorry brother he is not teaching the truth! The way he started his teaching made it clear where he is going! He was only speaking what fits his narrative. Only saying " prophesy of the new covenant is not about the future" discredits him as a serious bible teacher! Jesus Said in John 16 that the Holy Spirit will tell you the things about to come! Agabus was a prophet and he prophesied about a famine that later came so that the churches could prepare. He also told Paul and his coworkers what would happen to Paul in Jerusalem! Was ist about the future - of course!
When attending a pentecostal church, I felt inferior because I didn't have that urge to babble out incoherent sounds. Sometimes I would fake it but then I stopped doing it and studied God’s word to give me understanding. Thank you for this message. It gives a clear understanding about the topic of tongues.
I ABSOLUTELY love the way this man not only preaches, but teaches. The first person I have ever heard do it so understandably. My maiden name is Farley, and I dont believe in coincidencea
There are two types of speaking in tongues. I asked God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit back in 1987 about a year after I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I also asked Him for the gift of speaking in tongues then also. I experienced nothing until the next day. I heard in my spirit speaking. I opened my mouth and began to speak in tongues. I speak in tongues when I don't know how to pray. Like about what is happening in the world today, etc. God gives me what to pray through Him. Or if I'm asking for help or guidance, and I ask God for the understanding. It helps me in my prayer because satan does not understand it, and it keeps him from hindering my prayer. Sometimes it comes out singing. Usually when I praise Him in tongues. That is one kid of speaking in tongues which is personal. The other type of speaking in tongues is to be prayed in a church or gathering, where one person prays in tongues and another in the congregation interprets. Yes. Praying in tongues and praying in the Spirit is the same thing.
There ears are so deaf with pride! God showed me the truth before I heard this in His Word. Before I knew of such a thing as “tongues” or denominations, I found God drawing me into a certain church building. As I entered the front door, I heard them all speaking in a language I did not understand? (Spanish). I was noticed, as I turned to walk away. A man greeted me, in my own language and said, “it’s ok, we will translate for you”. As a new believer in Christ-Jesus, this was very edifying to me. To hear them offer this kind of love, as to spend time to do this, just for me. I was honored by this. I fellowshipped with these lovers of Christ for many months yet they could not see, the meaning of tongues as God had presented to us both, the moment I walked in that building and almost turned away. The one thing they couldn’t translate was this outnumbering utterance that came from there own lips. This thing they called, (Tongues). Even as a believer in Christ, I could not justify there actions nor did I know just what or who they where praying too. It did not edify me. It only brought confusion my way. So I prayed. Not for this utterance or understanding but for the gift to hear there prayers. The next time I entered that building I was in shock. I did not hear a word I could comprehend. Half the congregation was speaking in Spanish and the other half in utterances I could not recognize. I didn’t get five steps through the door before I heard, clear as a bell, (“bring darkness into the church”). A prayer I want NO part of. I left, went home and prayed for them. This led me towards the same study and conclusion which was just explained in this video. Good Job. Matthew 11:15 KJV “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
Wow. I get ya. I went to a pentacostal speaking in tongues church for about 3 years . I was in the worship team and played guitar in the band . One day I stood up as the music was playing( had the Sunday off) and God opened my eyes to the madness and kaos . In 5 seconds flat God revealled the total falsehood that I had been happily taking part in . I stood next to the sound mixer and a man was babbling " Yabbadubbadubbadoo " clearly Fred Flinstone , their was a man having fits of presumably holy spirit power running through him and the band played on just as I had done. It was MAD . If I thought it was mad , I wondered if stranger that had just wandered into the church think. I few days later I let the Pastor know what I saw . But apparently I am the mad and confused one. I have left now and repented and asked for forgiveness and mercy to God for what I made my worship to be... God bless you Jimmy.
You heard possibly half a sentence. How do you know the prayer wasn't against the enemy who would bring darkness into the church? You reacted in fear, which is a tool of Satan. It just may be that you indeed heard the enemy speak... but not in those tongues... he may have spoken doubt and fear into your mind, which you accepted and believed. Measure all things not against your experiences, but against the Bible. And the Bible clearly says the Holy Ghost gives tongues in two forms: as a message to the church, and as a private prayer. the first is to be interpreted, the second isn't necessarily.
So The Holy Ghost gave you the gift of interpreting tongues? Thats pretty deep bro .. and scary! That would mean gift of tongues is real. But I would question where you heard that from. That cannot come from a believer.

I have prayed I tongue for over 50 years. Praying in private at home has been a blessing to me, my family, the work environment, and church. The Holy Spirit has used me in prophesy, discerning of spirits and the word of knowledge. Nearly all the revelations I have obtained are during my private praying in tongues. Do not limit God or put the Holy Spirit in a fridge. Psalm 78:41. The Holy Spirit will reveal to any believer important upcoming issues in life and the church situation. The Holy Spirit knows everything. Trust him.
True discernment from the Holy Spirit will show you that the biblical gift of speaking in tongues, is the ability to speak in human languages other than your own native language & it will show you that speaking in random incoherent unintelligible blabbering gibberish syllables is not the gift of tongues & it IS NOT from the Holy Spirit. That babbling gibberish nonsense is from a spirit, a demonic spirit & it’s the same spirit that makes pagan religions speak in the exact type of random incoherent unintelligible blabbering gibberish.
@@DerekCulpepper-vu3cdyou are wrong and you're also disrespectful and guilty of quenching the Holy Spirit. Hmmm that’s funny because the moment I received tongues I was delivered immediately from every addiction I had and empowered to speak about God in front of people like never before it truly gave me power to live a life for God and all I wanted to do was read my bible! I had a craving for the Bible 24/7 after that. Must be real demonic lol that makes total sense
I am totally convinced that with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost the gift of tongues was actually the gift of languages. It was given so that the message could be taken to the ends of the earth and so that those listening would understand what the apostles were passing on to them.
@@durham5349 I think that is more or less happening anyway with missionaries learning languages of people they work amongst. But my point was that it makes more sense that the people at Pentecost were given a gift of languages, rather than a "tongue" that manifests itself as incomprehensible babble that only serves to confuse.
That is a theory. You should never add to scripture things that are not there. That's how false teachings are born. Whereas scripture tells us to establish things by the testimony of two or three, there is absolutely nothing in scripture that suggests that the Gospel was being spread by speaking in tongues. Not one. That should speak volumes to you. The closest you can get is what was written in Acts 2, but the book of acts is an historical account showing the development of the church over time. Historical accounts should NEVER nullify clear doctrine - something that came later on. And the doctrine completely disagrees with the theory that tongues were known languages.

No, is not! He has no idea what he is talking about! It's because people tent to find scriptures according to their own conviction and omit others who doesn't fit their narrative. My God Amen! God is dealing with me about this !!!! We have to have our own ministry, and know the word. People rely on church way to much more than they do God even at times.
Many problems here. Paul isn't comparing tongues and prophecy he's comparing tongues and prophecy in a church setting. Big difference. He's saying praying in tongues only edifies you. Hes not saying dont pray in tongues. Hes specifically talking about in church. Also to interpret the scripture "only God understands" as being a foreign language is beyond a stretch. Wouldn't he say only the foreign people would understand this natural tongue? Nobody would say "only God understands you" if youre speaking a foreign language. Paul is also very clear that interpreting tongues is a spiritual gift. Wouldn't all you need is someone from that land? And if the whole point of speaking in tongues is to preach the gospel to people of other languages why would interpreters need to be raisedup? Wouldn't the people whose tongues are natural to that language already understand them why would you need interpretation?
1 Corinthians 14:1-4 (ESV) Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
Yep. This preacher get it all wrong, first of all there is NOT competition, Paul is speaking about ORDER, not discouraging tongues over prophecy as a doctrine. Also, if tongues were about human language, how this will be mysteries in the Spirit, there is a place and a time for both, tongues and prophecy, and believe me, tongues definitely is NOT just a human language...

I really appreciate this breakdown of the subject. I almost joined a local church until I read under their statement of faith that what they call "speaking in tongues" is the evidence of being born again. On further research, I realized how these verses you covered (and more) are manipulated to back up this claim, esp'ly the one that says "do not forbid to speak in tongues." Nowhere in scripture does it ever say that there are two types of speaking in tongues. That is a unbiblical lie & false teaching of the Pentecostal/Charasmatic religions.
Nowhere in the Bible does it ever say that speaking in tongues is a language that Satan can’t understand. That is an unbiblical lie made up by the Pentecostal: Charismatic religions
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." Romans 8:26 Everything he said makes perfect sense. Can someone help me understand this passage? Years ago I battled depression and I cried to the LORD and suddenly I felt a sensation on my tongue to speak and so I did and this verse explains it perfectly bc the next day I opened the Bible and it happened to open on the chapter in Romans so I immediately accepted GOD was showing me something that I wasn't aware of. Both times I was not searching for it, I had accepted the logic this Pastor is speaking of & yet, due to my personal experience, I believe in addition to speaking a foreign language there are groanings that cannot be uttered (wordless groans, NIV) the Holy Spirit takes over when you cannot speak bc of deep sorrow as in my case. The rest of my life anytime I am in deep sorrow I feel a strong sensation on my tongue to allow the Holy Spirit access to my tongue and I have heard other people say the same thing. Really? The gift of languages (not known by the speaker) was demonstrated on the day of Pentecost. THAT gift has never EVER been duplicated since that day. The babbling and gibberish that Pentecostals present today is NOT what happened on the day of Pentecost. Period.
@Christian Warrior Very true.....I am in unbelief that the Pentecostal babbling of today has ANYTHING in common with the gift of languages seen on the day of Pentecost. Next?
Let's not forget that Jesus himself taught us how to pray: "Father, hallowed be thy name..." This would have been the PERFECT time to introduce/encourage a private prayer language.
Well said. The Pentecost in the book of Acts Tongues/Languages were given by the Holy Spirit to further the Gospel to the World/Gentiles or those excluded from the Jews. In the church of Corinth Pauls argument again point to Tongues as Languages/dialects. Again he was already dealing with this gibberish tongues as practiced in modern day Charismatic/Sunday Pentecostal Churches. According to Paul..Is speaking in tongues without edification of the church a Priority? NO! 1 Corinth 14,18,19 If only Christian would allow the Scripture to interpret itself. Child of God be warned, the three Unclean Spirits out of the mouth of the dragon, the beast and the and the false prophets are at work, they are the spirits of the devils working miracles to deceive. Flesh from dust because of Spirit the human body can speak, the voice coming out from our mouth is a gift a miracle...To GOD be the Glory forever and ever amen
Don't worry...if you don' t want to pray in tongues, you won't... if you don't want to prophesy, heal and cast out demons, you won't... If you don't want the gifts it's alright...you don't have to make up theology to fit your psychology... and the gifts are not a spirit that overpowers you and speaks through you without your consent, you have to speak in collaboration with the Holy Ghost....and I tell you it's a gift and a blessing... but you have to take the gift, not just wait passively for it to come into use.... And why waste time speaking against the use of tongues, why the fear? I'll tell you the answer: the fear of losing control. But I tell you, when you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit and you control the session....
Totally agree. Those who said tongues is satanic are actually used by satan because satan knows that our spirit is talking to God and satan cannot understand. That's why he really work hard to stop people from praying/speaking in tongues
Listen man. What we see in charismatic circles I dont believe is Satanic. I do believe there is a lot of flesh and doctrinal error going on, though. Why the obsession with tongues when Paul lists this gift last in the order of gifts? Why not go to a children's hospital and perform miracles of healing? Why not prophecy and have it come to pass? Why the obsession with this one gift? Is it because this particular gift as it is seen today is easy to fabricate and impossible to vet? Real tongues were languages. They were a visible miracle. That's why Paul says it's a gift to unbelievers and NOT believers. A man who does not speak German beginning to speak fluent German is a verifiable miracle. What we see happening in Charismatic circles is not even close.

I believe the same way I believe to get the tongues was a gift back in Jesus days because everybody spoke with different language and needed interpretation today it's out the box people are doing it they don't even know what they're doing they falling on the ground and it's gotten out of hand really bad You know they get up there and they put on a show I seen it in too many churches I was involved in it but about 15 or 20 years and I got out of it Call me quick and now I have more peace in my life even though I had Statesville cancer battling that and a lot of other things God is still with me Thank you Andrew

The clearest and most concise explanation of Biblical “tongues” and it’s purpose. Growing up within charismatic circles, corporate “tongue speaking” raised more questions and confusion for me, than a feeling I understood the original purpose of the gift. Context matters when properly interpreting the Bible and man has a long history of cherry picking a single verse to build an entire doctrine around. I have always noticed that people on the platform presenting typically used the same linguistic phrases over and over again pulling them out at the height of a service. “Shun dola muh hi” is one I heard from many people. It was learned behavior.
When we pray we come into agreement with the Holy Spirit or at least that is the way it should be. We are to pray according to Gods will. But there are times we don’t know what to pray for and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us and gives us direction on what to pray for.
Since I received Jesus and have been actively attending church, I've always felt left out because of this tongues thing. Years of private research often brought little comfort but lately, I've had to come back to it for greater clarity. This video has helped me much and I'm grateful. Now, my issue is, I still don't 'fit in'. I have always loved my church. Everything else is okay doctrinally except THIS! What do I do now? I can't keep pretending which is what I do Everytime we pray? By the way, how exactly are we to pray? What is praying in the spirit if it isn't the babble I know?
The ability to pray in the Spirit comes as a result of the Holy Spitit baptism. When we have asked for and are aware that the Lord is filling us with the Spirit, we must yield our tongue to the Spirit so that the overflowing baptism can occur. He testifys, in His language, through our tongue that we are " born of the Spirit(John ch.3).Afterward this is our prayer language. If you have Gods' Spirit and your spirit in the same body, but only one tongue between you, you ought to be able to pray in your language and He pray for you and through you in His.
Very simple, my brother: Matthew 6:9-13. That's what Jesus, the Son of God, told us to pay attention to in our prayers. I always find it funny that people think they're more clever than the Second Person of the Trinity when it comes to prayer.
(This text does not belong to me I'm just using it for those who may want to know)let's get started ----------------------------------------------------- ***Contrast praying in the Spirit with praying in the flesh and you will see clearly. Praying in flesh: "God bless me with more money...nicer clothes...happy marriage...less pressure...better health...better job...better career...more business...more friends." Praying IN THE SPIRIT: "God bless me to know you more. Bless others to love you and know you. Give me spiritual wisdom and insight. Not my will be done but YOURS, bless me with patience...help me to take up and endure my cross...help me to know you more by obeying you more. Help me to overcome the flesh, world, and devil. Let me live a life of selfless faith, pleasing you...a life courage to obey you and not seek the praise of men, etc..." To make this even more clear...collect and read all the prayers of Paul and Peter and John...you will find that they did not pray for ANY of the things we pray for. They are praying IN THE SPIRIT...with the mind of Christ.
“For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 14:2 NIV
1 Corinthians 14:10-11 (ESV) There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
I literally had to explain this to someone yesterday, and I am sooo tempted to send this video to them -- perfectly explained!!!! People forget about the context of Paul's letters, and how they are written to certain church communities that are just not doing great lol
Pastor, I want to thank God for your life, I pray that your video can reach all the pastors who are unable to understand the gift of tongues and its interpretation. I have never heard anyone or any preacher explaining this topic of tongues the way you just did, your teaching is very clear and excellent, not complicated at all, the Spirit of God filled my room whilst you were teaching, and I knew that this is what I needed to hear today, I stopped going to church because my spirit was grieving everytime when the whole church begin to pray in tounges, pastors, leaders, everyone I have been praying to God to open pastors understanding of speaking or praying in tongues, I dont even know how to thank you. Not that I didnt practice that before but through reading of the bible, I started understanding that its a gift and as you have explained. I am happy and your teaching released me to start going to church as I take it that not everyone has been given a gift of knowledge of understanding the Word of God, I will continue to pray for my church for God to speak to my pastors about this topic, please help me to pray not only for my church but to all, there is no explanation that I think can exceed this one. You are very good, keep it up. Stay blessed pastor.
Hi, I am truly sorry to learn that your spirit was grieved at church. You can find some Christians around you and you can do Bible studies together regularly. This is an assembly according to Scripture so long as you edify and love one another as Christ loved you!
I like to keep open minded about phenomena that cannot be easily explained. Especially when there are plenty of bible passages that seem to convey tongues in a positive light. Blessings all, whatever your beliefs are.
WE MUST NEVER TRY TO BRING THE WORD OF GOD DOWN TO FIT OUR EXPERIENCES BUT TAKE OUR EXPERIENCES UP TO THE WORD OF GOD. THIS VERSE WAS 20 YEARS AFTER PENTECOST AND THE QUESTION THE APOSTLE TO THE GENTILES ASK WAS ... Acts 19:2 He said unto them, HAVE YE RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST SINCE YE BELIEVED? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. PLEASE DO NOT LET ANYONE CHEAT YOU OUT OF EVERYTHING GOD HAS FOR YOU. Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the GENTILES also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Romans 15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
So thankful for this teaching because I have been a radically saved Christian for 20 years and I have never spoken in tongues as taught by many. I thought I was overlooked. I even tried to do it but it never felt honest, so now I understand why it felt wrong and laying hands on people and praying for them feels really natural and good.
If tongues was primarily a sign for unbelievers who visited your church and spoke a different language, why would there need to be an interpreter? The hearer would understand already. But if tongues can be interpreted and provide edification to the church, then that doesn't sound like it is an evangelistic message. Also, I don't see evidence that speaking in tongues without an interpreter provides a false type of self edification, as he suggests. The text indicates it provides an actual positive self edification, even though Paul argues that it is better in the church if there is an interpreter so more people are edified
There's a lot more in the gifts of tounges and healing working through love I've learnt and seen and heard testermony if from powerfull men of God .But I love the way you teach about the Gospell of grace and love I believe its the spirit praying in tounges through us who is love
Pastor Andrew Farley keep up the good work, thank you so so much for helping me, my eyes are wide open and I feel so free for the first time in this CHRIST walk. Be bless my friend.
Andrew, I have searched this topic out for YEARS in attempt to gain clear understanding and to shake the doctrinal teaching I was raised in concerning tongues being salvific. You had me so excited to have finally found sensible answers....UNTIL you skipped many unexplained verses in Acts 19 when Paul asked the 12 men if they had received the Holy Spirit since they had believed. Clearly, there was no communication barriers between Paul and these 12 men, and scripture does not indicate there was anyone else around that would have benefitted from these tongues. So...I am left right back where I began.
Angela Netterville [sibling with love&respect] So you really want to know “real tongues” well here it is. First, the main interpretations of the word “tongues” is usually thought to be in the realms of linguistics. First one being ‘speaking in other languages’ [aka bilingual] The second is ‘speaking in a language that only God and Angel know’ [aka glossolalia] Major problems.. two to be exact. One: both can be replicated by the unbelievers without God [by mean. Accidental medical practice or by other religious spirits] As the Holy Spirit says through Paul tongues are a SIGN to unbeliever, if it’s replicated without God then it is NOT a sign for them(1 Corinthians 14:22) Two: the inner-changeable aspect is non-existence when it comes to other parts of the Word of God. Think about it the Holy Spirit said through Paul [For bilingual]“If anyone speaks in a tongue, two-or at the most three,” (1 Corinthians 14:27) so what? people were speaking in church with different language? Or [For glossolalia] when the Holy fell on Cornelius [A Roman] did he started to speak Babel and for Peter to recognize it as being the same as they received? [On the Day of Pentecost] (Acts 10:44-47) The true interpretation is ‘manifestations.’ What this means is God’s Word reveals a invisible attribute of Him, which is manifested by the Spirit through words [understandable words like English] declaring His Wonders. Which a unbeliever CANNOT replicate, plus it is inner-changeable with other part of the Word of God. Their you have it ‘true tongues.’ I hope this helps.
God is God of order and Farley's dissertation produced more answers on years of confusion which created division between so called spiritual and those who are hungry for God and yet naive. The clarity shows wisdom. Wisdom is from God hence I accept this sermon as wisdom from God. Removes condemnation and full of grace and truth.
This is exactly how i see it.. i have friends who believe differently than me... when i see the word prophesy i replace it with teach.. Paul spoke in other languages.. i beleive greek..aramaic.. possibly hebrew and one other.. therefore his many tongues
Hi, Jacques. The person who speaks in tongues does not speak to men (to preach the good news of Jesus Christ), but speaks to God. 1 Corinthians 14:2. If you cross reference other verses, you'll see tongues can be praise, magnification of God, thanks, or declaring God's amazing works.
*NOT TRUE:* 1 Cor 14:2, "one who speaks in a tongue *_does not speak to men, but to God;_* for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries." Explanation: There are diversities of tongues (1 Cor 12:28). At Pentecost, they "understood" what was being said-that is *SIGN TONGUES.* When we pray to God, that is *PRAYER TONGUES,* where ONLY GOD UNDERSTANDS. Do not RESIST THIS GIFT!
The WHOLE TRUTH & nothing but the TRUTH. Amen Amen & Amen! James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.🙌🙌
Then why did God arrange for Greek to be the world-wide common language, at the time of Christ's birth? And why did God have tongues happen in Acts 2 before a crowd that was bilingual, according to John 19:20 and Acts 21:40 and 22:2? In fact, if tongues was given to communicate the gospel to people who couldn't understand the language of the evangelist... then please, can you tell me why we have no such account in the entire BIBLE? Instead of evangelists preaching in tongues, we see over and over, that it's the new believers who speak in tongues. Because tongues was NOT for communicating the gospel. (Of course God can use it that way, if He so chooses!) But tongues were given to be able to "build up yourselves on your most holy faith, *praying in the Spirit."* (Jude 1:20) That expression should ring a bell. check out 1 Cor 14:4. How does praying in the Spirit build you up? 1 Cor 14:14-16. And watch out! Don't violate Scripture by inserting a meaning for "in the spirit" into verse 15, that obviously doesn't fit verses 14 and 16! A cardinal rule for Scripture interpretation is that the definition of a term remains constant within context.
@LatterDaySamurai Just because your mind is too closed to recognize truth, doesn't mean what I've said is wrong. Search the Scriptures, and let them speak for themselves. And above all, don't add to the Bible!
@LatterDaySamurai Just a suggestion; you might wish to check out John 15, where Jesus talks about branches in Him who don't bear fruit. Your way of relating toward me, isn't exactly the fruit of the Spirit.
@@pollyjetix2027 I agree with you on these! pastors has so much to account before they enter heaven.. tongue is too powerful to build up someone's spirit
@@pollyjetix2027 actually the gift of tongues have longed ceased. And tongues refer to languages. And the tongues of angels are very special.. Because when you read in the bible.. When an angel speak.. Everyone understands what he is saying. Angels doesnt need interpreters. So if you speak in tongues.. With no interpreter.. You better be silent and speak to God because you dont benefit anyone, only yourself. The gifts is to be used to edify the church.
I just recently received the gift of tongues and after watching this video the day before yesterday, I started questioning it and seeking so hard for an answer. And boy, did I get it from the father, not from other people. When you speak in tongues your spirit is praying for things that you don't even know you need and that your not praying for yourself because you are unaware. I have to go but please do not be mislead. Practice speaking in tongues as often as you can even if it sounds like babbling, keep babbling. Like the Navajo whispers in ww2 God understands!
I was once involved in the Pentecostal/charismatic movement for several years, and it was horrible to see how many within the movement completely went AGAINST Scripture and inserted their own presuppositions into their own man-made doctrine of tongues. -Many said that all Christians are to speak in tongues, even though I Corinthians 12:30 clearly states otherwise (the Greek is even more emphatic than the English) -Many said that they speak a "heavenly" language based on I Corinthians 13:1, when 1.) tongues are CLEARLY shown to be other human languages (Read Acts 2) and 2.) Paul is NOT making a doctrinal statement about angelic tongues, but is making a hypothetical statement about contrasting a simple pursuit of spiritual gifts apart from Christian love -Many promoted the idea of simply blurting out gibberish in the middle of prayer time and services, when Paul CLEARLY set bounds upon how the gift is to be exercised (I Cor. 14:27-28, I Cor 14:40) - -Many used Romans 8:26 to circumvent Paul's instructions and rules set elsewhere, when that verse clearly does not go against the command to do things decently and in order in church. -Many forget that there are pagan religions who also claim the ability to speak in tongues as well. If your doctrine contradicts what is written in Scripture, then your doctrine is wrong, no matter what your experience may be. You cannot use experience to sidestep the Word of God. If your doctrine or practice is not in conformity with Scripture, you are taking a step in the direction of subverting the Word of God and ultimately succumbing to false doctrine.
Tongues were given on The day of Pentecost The birth of The church, nothing has changed, Christians still get baptised in The Holy Spirit and speak in tongues! Delude yourself and others but you are in denial, fear or/ & unbelief
No one says...tongues are not for today ..he's saying for in which context they are used,practiced..many churches are practicing false doctrine in HOW THEY USE ..I'm disappointed myself because for any years ,decades I went to churches that taught this way and was deceived ..sad indeed ..people maybe had right heart ..but in bible it says that even the elect could be deceived ..dont be too prideful to think you can't too ..all I know is the more I listen to different preachers on TH-cam and the scripture .it makes sense ..I pray in tongues in private ..but I would never blurt out in public any more knowing its unbiblical and that I would be in direct disobedience to god ! Knowledge is power ..power for transformation ..enlightment .use it..there are many scripture that talk about tongues but have to be read in right context ..and I also believe in rightly dividing the word of truth through cross referencing and reading more than one line and thinking that's all there is to it !
In 1Cor.14:2 it speaks of praying in a language that's between man and God that" no man understands".It's obvious that this is a different manifestation of speaking in " tongues" which is always only been one spiritual language.Yes including Acts ch.2.I percieve that you have a religious spirit that you already had your mind made up when you walked in to that pentecostal service. In love i'll tell you that what ever you thought you knew about this God given spiritual manifestation is wrong.Three times in Acts 2 the Word makes it clear that those in the crowd " heard" in their languages. The apostles and others present speak in the same language that you heard in that church.A judgemental spirit is always one that attacks what they don't understand.Obviousl the manifestation of "tongues" in ch.12 isn't the same as in ch.14:1,2.In ch.12 we are talking about a Holy Spirit given gift of speaking in the " tongue of angels" that works together with the gift of interpretation. If this gift is a human language why isn't it identifyed by the pastor and someone brought in that understands that earthly language instead of needing a supernatural gift to translate it?
Thank you Andrew Farley for this video. I have never heard it explained so clearly! I shared this video with a couple people who are very much into the private prayer language, and they just about hit the ceiling!! They seemed totally blinded to what you are saying. I cannot understand how they cannot see the clear Biblical teaching on this. I want to say, it must be a counterfeit spirit that's got them blinded. But how is it then, that we agree on every other teaching of God's Word? The important fundamentals of the faith. We did finally "agree to disagree", but it still disturbs me something awful that I CAN'T MAKE THEM SEE!! Oh well. I will keep praying about it. That's what prayer is for. God can make them see.
The clearest and well clarified explanation of “tongues” is covered in Acts chapter 2. “....everyone heard them speaking in their own language.....” (paraphrased). And like the brother covered here, Paul made clear how useful speaking in an unknown tongue (language) was......without an interpreter. how speaking in different languages became its own religion is beyond me. But I wholeheartedly agree with this man’s approach......rightly, with consideration to those who may have erred. But certain denominations are not alone....I also am uncomfortable with denominations that firmly state miracles are no more. Uh, maybe they ought to clarify the stance because they preach and teach a supernatural Godhead but then firmly limit His ability to work supernaturally? How dat now? SO KEEPING THE ORIGINAL WAY, not adding to or taking away (as John wrote) becomes more and more relevant as time passes since the first century church. When it comes to God’s business, continuing to be old fashioned IS the only way. there have been some well known figures in the church in recent history that have chosen to go their own way....some that may surprise you saying.....”well there are many ways to heaven....” WHAT? Even a child in beginner Sunday school will answer that question correctly when taught the old way.....Christ is the ONLY WAY to the Father, being the correct answer. it’s very important to keep God’s word, passing it on from generation to generation. Being vigilant, our part of the fight against certain creepers who try to creep in unaware. 😏
Andrew Farley: Love is not a spiritual gift it is one of the Christian graces that we are to appropriate according to II Peter 1: 5-7, and it is a fruit of the Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit are mentioned in I Corinthians 12. They are suppose to be ministered in love, the same way that a preacher is suppose to speak the truth in love Eph. 4: 15.
Pastor Andrew thank you so much for clarifying to me the issue of praying in tongues.God send me to your channel thus I learned more and the relevant scriptures that you shared. I will read them again and again to fully understand about praying in togues
I was raised Pentecostal, and have heard someone speak in tongues and it interpreted by another that edified the Church. I also was taught that it was your own prayer language. Thank you Pastor for going through the scriptures and clearing that up. I have found that allot of the teachings and beliefs were from scripture out of context and it's time to know the truth.
that "prayer language" idea is a result of cherry picking and misinterpreting Scripture if it's your own prayer lanugage why would paul say it needs to be interpreted?
Paul encouraged the Corinthian Christians to continue the practice of speaking with other tongues in their worship of God. He also encouraged them to speak in tongues in their individual prayer life as a means of spiritual edification, or building up. The Bible says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself . . .” (1 Cor. 14:4). Paul also stated in First Corinthians 14:14, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, MY SPIRIT PRAYETH, but my understanding is unfruitful.” Notice he said, “My spirit prays.” The Amplified Bible reads, “My spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays . . . .” God is a Spirit. When you pray in tongues, your spirit is in direct contact with God, who is a Spirit. When you speak in tongues, you are talking to Him by divine, supernatural means.
LA Lady, greetings from South Africa ... that sentence is incomplete ... edifying yourself over and above the next individual you are selfish ... just read it again. Trust we can enjoy a transcontinental conversation in decency
Your Spirit is not the Holy Spirit He is God .You already are made up of body, soul and spirit. Pentecostals always read the first verses of 1Cor .14 and do not realize Paul is pointing out what they are doing then he corrects them .see 'my understanding is unfruitful ' The he goes on to say. ,read verses 6-11 .v .20 be not children in understanding . - - in understanding be men .Then in v.21 he quotes Isaiah's prophecy about the meaning of tongues ,it is a a sign to the unbelieving leaders in Jerusalem ,that is Jews .Signs have meanings this one is about gentile languages instead of Hebrew ,and markes the start of the gospel going to the gentiles.
I love Pastor Andrew Farley. For me he is spot on where most Christian doctrine is concerned. The gift of Speaking in Tongues is something he has never experienced, and he is doing his best to understand a spiritual mystery that really has to be experienced to understand it. Much like being born again... This born again concept, is total jibberish to the unbeliever. So, to the Christian brother or sister who has never received the Spiritual gift of tongues, the scriptures concerning them are a mystery. Oh and just for the record, I believe, this notion "that you are not saved unless you have received the gift of speaking in tongues" is ridiculous. Tongues, like Prophecy is a Spiritual gift and the only prerequisite is that you are already saved. Glad to hear from you sister.... God Bless You!
So good on so many points but wrong on one. There are TWO types of tongues. One IS to edify the believer and the other is to edify the church as a venue of prophecy! In fact, in several verses God shows us this to be true.
Speaking in tongues are words from the Heart of God to another person. It is speaking Gods Language, which is Truth. Most people do not understand truth, it is an unknown language to them (mysteries). Gods truths are simple, not gibberish and confusion. Gibberish doesnt glorify God, truth does. This is what Jesus taught me. Ask Him to teach you about this! I pray this comment helps someone. ❤
Tatiana: I was surprised to read your response after such a detailed explanation was given by Andrew. Do you base what you are saying on the Bible or your own experience?
I feel like an outcast at times among certain believers…I have met many different groups through the years on this walk and I learn new things but then slowly the spirit begins separating me from the group and at first I thought there was something wrong with me, maybe it was the enemy but now I understand that The Almighty is separating me for a purpose to teach me and for our relationship to grow one on one without me becoming attached to a group cult mentality.
Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 1 Cor. 14:4 Kulang ang paliwanag niya, kapatid. Bagamat hindi kasama ito sa ating kaligtasan, ay maganda na maunawaan nating mabuti ang salita ng Dios. Sabi nga ni Jesus, believe and you shall recieve.
When Paul prayed in tongues more than everyone else, where was he when he prayed? Also, prayer is not preaching is it? It’s praying. Who do we pray to? Other people? No. praying in tongues is praying. To God. It’s prayer. Jesus said when we pray (in English or tongues) we should pray in secret. I bet this guy LOVES to pray from that stage he’s on!
Farley has some good insights into scripture, but I respectfully encourage my brother to remain open on this topic. #1 As Marc De Baerdemaeker posted here, 1 Cor 14:4 accepts that a person CAN edify himself by speaking in tongues (trust me, millions do everyday, and it greatly builds our walks with Christ). #2 The individual speaker IS ALSO part of the church, so I see no reason to differentiate between a single believer and many believers being edified. If it's wrong to edify ourselves, we'll have to throw out Phil. 4:8. #3 The point of the chapter is about order and the need for interpretation so that the entire church is edified. Paul clearly accepts that the individual speaker is being edified by speaking in tongues, but unless it's interpreted, everybody else is left in the dark. Thus, there's no reason to shout out a message in tongues in a group setting unless someone can interpret. I can also attest to the fact that while tongues can be a human language, that's not always the case. I was in a church service where a Hispanic family invited an unsaved friend. One of the church members gave a public message in tongues that sounded pretty "normal" for tongues (iow, it didn't sound like any recognizable language). The Hispanic family later asked their friend what he thought of the service. He was generally supportive but mentioned how impressed he was when "that gringo spoke perfect Spanish". He went on to share how the "gringo" described the gospel story of Jesus giving his life for us. His friends were both excited for him, but also astonished because they spoke Spanish, and they did not hear the "gringo" speak Spanish. In fact, most of us in the room would have recognized the Spanish language, but his tongues were something different. In this case, the miracle took place in the hearer, rather than the Spirit empowering the one speaking tongues to speak a human language. I think we need to be careful about putting God in a box.
Context is critical to proper interpretation. In the context of 1Cor. 14:4, edifying oneself was being rebuked, not celebrated. Everything was all about the body of Christ. God has said quite plainly, that He does not dwell in the boxes (churches) that we have made with our hands, but we better do a better job of weeding out false doctrines. They are ripping us apart. 1Cor.4:6: Do not go beyond what is written.
@@crossclarity423 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 1 Corinthians 14:4 NIV 1corinthians.bible/1-corinthians-14-4 where rebuking there? dont add words on the bible there is no rebuking in here but he isnjust saying that it should interpreted or ask God to help you interpret it or else keep it quielty but you are not discouraged to do so.. dont twist the wording in bible pls For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 1 Corinthians 14:13-15 NIV bible.com/bible/111/1co.14.13-15.NIV
@@lleange363 It is OK to disagree llea, but let us not contend with one another. I have carefully studied this doctrine for many years. To the best of my understanding, Paul is rebuking the Corinthians for abusing the gift of tongues. He is trying the explain the difference between selfish acts in the assembly versus selfless acts within the assembly. That is the context in which Paul compares speaking in an UNKNOWN language versus prophesying with clarity. 1Cor. 14:9 essentially says, if you speak in an UNKNOWN tongues ( words that are unclear) you are JUST speaking into the air. We MUST weigh 1Cor. 14:2 with 1Cor. 14:9. Let's keep the lines of communication open UNTIL we are perfectly united in truth. 1Cor. 1:10
There's speaking in tongues and then there is praying in tongues (used interchangeably as in the Spirit). Should not confuse the private w God (prayer and public tongues and interpretation) if Paul was discouraging self edification then Jude 20 shouldn't be in the Bible and like half of David's psalms is him "edifying himself "
Thankyou brother, you always have a great message, absolutely you remind us that's it's about Jesus and him all my needs are in and our saviour saves so many around the world that speaks in different languages, praise God for his Word being translated into so many different languages, Wow preacher Jesus really has done it all and is complete, Jesus love is so large that nothing else matters
That was one of the best messages on tongues I heard in a long time. Maybe they agreed with my own views based on God's word. One statement I could not understand "there is never a single time in the Bible when tongues is spoken in a Jewish only community". That seems to disagree with what happened in Acts 2 since Acts 2:5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. Also Acts 2:11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism). Another query; Acts 2:41 Those who accepted his message (Peter's) were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. How did the different language speaking Jews understand the one language he spoke viz. when he witnessed Christ in verses 22-39. Did he speak Koine Greek which was probably common to all Jews from other nations? They obviously understood in order to accept Peter's message. As per the command of Jesus the Apostles were to witness to Jews first and then to the Gentiles. So the first Church began with these 3000 Jewish believers. Paul also witnessed first in a Jewish synagogue when he reached a new place even though he was appointed as an Apostle for the Gentiles.
just a thought but when Paul said" I speak in tongues even more than you all" he doesn't say if he is in prayer or not but if he is in prayer at home alone what is the benefit of tongues if it is only to reach the other languages and if he is then it is a jew only community bleek but true
@@pauldsanford612 first and foremost, please correct yourself when you use the words "when Paul said" but "God said in his word, through Paul about Paul's testimony. In Matt 22:31 Jesus referring to Exodus 3:6, asked the Sadducees "..have you not read what God said to you(NIV)? Even though God spoke to Moses 1300 BC, Jesus confirmed that if/when the Sadducees read scripture, God would say & speak to them, then. Now another 2000 years later, when you & I, read scripture God will speak to us through his word today and now. Since God is eternal and so is his word (Isa 40:8, 1 Pet 1:25). In Matt 22:43 Jesus referring to Psalm 110:1 says "David speaking by the (Holy) Spirit" which confirms that all Scripture that men wrote they did while speaking by the (Holy) Spirit. Which is the same thing as in 2 Peter 1:20-21 ".....men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit". There is also an additional truth we learn that prophecy(scripture) never had its origin in the will of man nor did any prophecy(scripture) come from the prophet's own interpretation. This means that neither Peter nor Paul could decide to write scripture by his own will, saying " I don't want God's people to make the same mistake I did, so I will write scripture as a warning" which is what a Pastor said once at a Church i fellowship-ed at, that was completely against God's word. What profound words the Holy Spirit gave to the apostle Paul: "My spirit prays", and "in the spirit I speak mysteries to God". The only entity that would be against this .....is Satan!
Good point. Some of what this guy is preaching is demonic. He doesn't seem stupid, so it has to be something else. Pray for him. 2 Cor. 14:2 makes it clear. He's steering people wrong and he will have to answer to God for it.
This is the best teaching on tongues I've heard. Thank you for this. I've been praying for clarity on this topic and God directed me to this video. Praise God for His word, and bless you for this. Sola scriptura!
I really appreciate this because by simply reading the bible, this is what I understood. People "speaking in tongues" seemed strange and out of place the few times I've heard it. All the other ways have been with hysteria and thrashing
Love is not a gift. It's a commandment. Love is a better WAY in which to operate. Not a replacement for God's gifts. The whole point of 1 Cor 13 is that the gifts must operate in love. Not in self-focus. Not wanting to be somebody. So, since I am only a clanging cymbal if I speak in tongues without Love, then on the other hand, if I speak in tongues in the WAY of Love, then I am NOT a clanging cymbal. And if I am able to have all knowledge (through the gifts of supernatural revelation) and if I operate in this gift in LOVE, then I am not a "nothing." See? Love is the WAY in which to operate in the gifts. It's is not a replacement of any of the gifts. ALL of the gifts of the Spirit are perfect, good gifts, which are given from above, from the Father. We are foolish to put them down, or think they are worthless, just because we don't understand them. How that must hurt our Father in Heaven!
@@sheroyal9326 I don't think you understood a thing I said. I agree, Love is not envy or strife. Love is longsuffering. And the wisdom that is from above is humble and avoids strife. But Paul never says love is a gift. Love is a WAY.
@@sheroyal9326 So... just for the sake of conversation (not to butt heads) does this mean that it's wrong to assert correct doctrine if someone else is mistaken? Because that's all I was doing. I was not looking for a fuss. I was simply discussing Scripture. Iron sharpens iron. We can be friends, and still scrape against each other. it's good for us. As long as we don't take it personally and try to hurt each other.
It’s usually people who haven’t spoken in tongues that dismiss the gift. How could one understand something that they haven’t done? Our church has interpreters for the congregation. I sometimes pray in tongues. It totally keeps any distractions from interrupting the direct prayer to God, and overcomes any physical mental or emotional exhaustions while praying in the spirit. It’s not angels, it’s the Holy Spirit edifying God. You don’t have to pray in tongues to be saved, it’s a very helpful tool in your armor of God. And prophecy is just as the dictionary describes. If you have witnessed modern day prophets you would understand. Nothing but love Brother God Bless you.🙏
Love Dr. Farley, but I feel he has only partial insight into this topic. I’ve been speaking in tongues since I was 12 years old and it has never left me, even when I went through times of backsliding and doubt and trying to turn it off, but I couldn’t. You have to experience it to really understand it. It’s an individual prayer language and not only for addressing the congregation. I don’t think I’m crazy, at least not last time I checked. LOL. I received it in a church service after accepting Jesus. Also want to make clear, not all Pentecostals and Charasmatics teach it is required for salvation. Only Oneness Pentecostals who also deny the trinity. I believe the gifts are still in operation today, but there are people and groups out there who are not of God and false, who create even more skepticism and unbelief.
Please read 1st Corinthians 12 thru 14 and re-evaluate your understanding about the gift of tongues. Think of it this way, if you can't act the same way in public as you do in private when it comes to prayer, then there is something wrong with your behavior.
@@curiousgeorge7386 It’s a weak argument to say that something is wrong if you don’t wish to do it in public and not of God if you do it in private. You may be praying for things that you don’t want others to know or may not want to bring attention to yourself. Is it wrong for me to pray naked?
@@NC-vz6ui You obviously missed my point. The next time you’re at the grocery store wandering around the cereal aisle, start speaking or praying in tongues and see how that works out for you. It's not Paul pitting tongues against prophecy at all. To edify ourselves and to edify the church is not one at the expense of. Paul was saying tongues edifies yourself and prophecy edifies the church. Building OURSELVES up in the most holy faith. If I build myself up by spending time with God and learning the word, letting Him remove the plank out of my eye, digging deep to get the JUNK out, then I can be a fit vessell to then EDIFY the church and yes even prophesy to the church and thus encouraging them coming from a place of being full of HIM and being able to pour out what He's poured into me. It's not one at the expense of the other and it's certainly not being greedy and just seeking to edify yourself and become "fat" but never pouring out into others. He's got the wrong context and is using it not to describe what it's really saying but rather to discourage the reality of different gifts of tongues and once again as religion always does to minimize or crush the gifts of the Spirit and their purpose here and now.

I prayed for clarity and God presented to me Andrew Farley God bless you brother!
Thank you for the clarity. Up until now, I thought praying in the spirit and speaking in tongues was one and the same. It all makes sense. The Day of Pentacost was when God poured out His love on the Gentiles by allowing them to hear the Gospel in their own language. Wow!
Pure love for us gentiles
@@richardstark1977 Yes. He has it all twisted to mean what he wants it to mean, or what he thinks it means.
It was like the day I discovered that Santa wasn't real either (when I was like 8 years old!)
We left the Pentecostal Charismatic church....
Dear brother thank you very much for teaching the truth of the Bible. May God bless you and use you in these last days.

Good Job.
Matthew 11:15 KJV
“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
Wow.
Well said, as it is clearly explained in 1st Corinthians 12 thru 14. God Bless

I am totally convinced that with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost the gift of tongues was actually the gift of languages. It was given so that the message could be taken to the ends of the earth and so that those listening would understand what the apostles were passing on to them.
So should all launch out of mission ministry to all the countries that speak a different language than we personally speak?
@@durham5349 I think that is more or less happening anyway with missionaries learning languages of people they work amongst.
1 Corinthians 14:1-4 (ESV)
Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
Totally. The problem is that it still doesn't really define what "Tongue"s" is. Frustrating.

Praying in tongues and praying in the Spirit is the same thing.
Nowhere in scripture does it ever say that there are two types of speaking in tongues. That is a unbiblical lie & false teaching of the Pentecostal/Charasmatic religions.
Nowhere in the Bible does it ever say that speaking in tongues is a language that Satan can’t understand. That is an unbiblical lie made up by the Pentecostal: Charismatic religions
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." Romans 8:26
Everything he said makes perfect sense.

There is no confusion if you let the Word of God interpret itself and stop trying to make it line up with your denomination.
All the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are still available today, for the body of Christ.

Next?
Let's not forget that Jesus himself taught us how to pray: "Father, hallowed be thy name..."
This would have been the PERFECT time to introduce/encourage a private prayer language.
NO!
1 Corinth 14,18,19
If only Christian would allow the Scripture to interpret itself.

Don't worry...if you don' t want to pray in tongues, you won't...
if you don't want to prophesy, heal and cast out demons, you won't...
If you don't want the gifts it's alright...you don't have to make up theology to fit your psychology...
and the gifts are not a spirit that overpowers you and speaks through you without your consent,
you have to speak in collaboration with the Holy Ghost....and I tell you it's a gift and a blessing...
but you have to take the gift, not just wait passively for it to come into use....
@@larkinjau36 that is a powerful message in itself, and we're blind as Christ's body from seeing this
Absolutely correct and well said.

Maybe I am misinterpreting Jude 20 and 21, but it sounds like tongues or praying in the spirit, builds US up.
The spirit is not tongues
When we pray we come into agreement with the Holy Spirit or at least that is the way it should be. We are to pray according to Gods will. But there are times we don’t know what to pray for and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us and gives us direction on what to pray for.
Andrew Farley thanks for these words. I was is confusion and now I am clear.

(This text does not belong to me I'm just using it for those who may want to know)let's get started
----------------------------------------------------- ***Contrast praying in the Spirit with praying in the flesh and you will see clearly.
Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.”

Angela Netterville welcome to the club

Tongues were a gift to get the message of the gospel out to the world...It was a actual language not jibberish....
(Of course God can use it that way, if He so chooses!) But tongues were given to be able to "build up yourselves on your most holy faith, *praying in the Spirit."* (Jude 1:20)
That expression should ring a bell. check out 1 Cor 14:4.
I was once involved in the Pentecostal/charismatic movement for several years, and it was horrible to see how many within the movement completely went AGAINST Scripture and inserted their own presuppositions into their own man-made doctrine of tongues.
-Many said that all Christians are to speak in tongues, even though I Corinthians 12:30 clearly states otherwise (the Greek is even more emphatic than the English)
-Many said that they speak a "heavenly" language based on I Corinthians 13:1, when 1.) tongues are CLEARLY shown to be other human languages (Read Acts 2) and 2.) Paul is NOT making a doctrinal statement about angelic tongues, but is making a hypothetical statement about contrasting a simple pursuit of spiritual gifts apart from Christian love
-Many promoted the idea of simply blurting out gibberish in the middle of prayer time and services, when Paul CLEARLY set bounds upon how the gift is to be exercised (I Cor. 14:27-28, I Cor 14:40) -
-Many used Romans 8:26 to circumvent Paul's instructions and rules set elsewhere, when that verse clearly does not go against the command to do things decently and in order in church.
One of the THE BEST teaching on this topic! God bless you brother.
I have found that allot of the teachings and beliefs were from scripture out of context and it's time to know the truth.
that "prayer language" idea is a result of cherry picking and misinterpreting Scripture
if it's your own prayer lanugage why would paul say it needs to be interpreted?
Man of God,please seek more light on this subject. Paul did not discourage them from doing something that He did more than them all in private.
Paul encouraged the Corinthian Christians to continue the practice of speaking with other tongues in their worship of God. He also encouraged them to speak in tongues in their individual prayer life as a means of spiritual edification, or building up. The Bible says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself . . .” (1 Cor. 14:4).
Paul also stated in First Corinthians 14:14, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, MY SPIRIT PRAYETH, but my understanding is unfruitful.” Notice he said, “My spirit prays.”
The Amplified Bible reads, “My spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays . . . .” God is a Spirit. When you pray in tongues, your spirit is in direct contact with God, who is a Spirit. When you speak in tongues, you are talking to Him by divine, supernatural means.
Idiot
@Scott, you are wrong, that is very unchristian like of you...
Thank you for clearly explaining the gift of tongues, scripturally and logically. 🙏
Very well explained brother MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
So good on so many points but wrong on one. There are TWO types of tongues. One IS to edify the believer and the other is to edify the church as a venue of prophecy! In fact, in several verses God shows us this to be true.
Thi is the only divine explanation, make perfect sense, the church is for growth the ellect.God bless you.
Thank you. This has been bothering me for a few weeks. I’m at peace now this makes perfect sense
God's "language" is not speaking gibberish.
Her experience
I feel like an outcast at times among certain believers…I have met many different groups through the years on this walk and I learn new things but then slowly the spirit begins separating me from the group and at first I thought there was something wrong with me, maybe it was the enemy but now I understand that The Almighty is separating me for a purpose to teach me and for our relationship to grow one on one without me becoming attached to a group cult mentality.
Amen...proper explanation 🙏
It is good to hear the truth for a change. So many today are being miss led with false teachings. This is one of them but there are a lot more today.
.I am seeking for this...
AMAZING GOD..

Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 1 Cor. 14:4
Kulang ang paliwanag niya, kapatid.
Bagamat hindi kasama ito sa ating kaligtasan, ay maganda na maunawaan nating mabuti ang salita ng Dios.
Sabi nga ni Jesus, believe and you shall recieve.
@@Hammer1216 Hi hello po...Slamat i believed po sa toungues i also recieved it...thers a kind of toungue to be witness and to be empowered
1Cor.4:6: Do not go beyond what is written.

where rebuking there? dont add words on the bible
there is no rebuking in here but he isnjust saying that it should interpreted or ask God to help you interpret it or else keep it quielty but you are not discouraged to do so.. dont twist the wording in bible pls
For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

1Cor. 1:10
thank you dear brother, excellent Holy Spirit Edification indeed! Glory to God!

In Matt 22:31 Jesus referring to Exodus 3:6, asked the Sadducees "..have you not read
what God said to you(NIV)? I will comment on your original thought after your reply.

John MacArthur.

The gift of Love is the #1
Love is not a gift.
And if I am able to have all knowledge (through the gifts of supernatural revelation) and if I operate in this gift in LOVE, then I am not a "nothing."
See?
@@sheroyal9326 So... who's continuing... you or me? LOL
Love is not a gift, it is a FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
