  • Finally had enough of the slow-turning 6V starter on our 1954 Studebaker 4-door sedan. Follow along as we upgrade the battery cables, and see if new & larger gauge cables really help on a 6 volt system as much as everyone says they do.

Thanks Larry! I'm really happy and impressed with how fast the starter spins the engine over now! Got another video in the works, be out soon.

I had a 61 Buick 364 that wouldn't crank after a hot soak. The solenoid was mounted on too so that it was right near the exhaust manifold. Replacing the starter didn't help, so I tried an earlier year starter that had the solenoid mounted on the bottom side instead. Problem solved.

I am having the same issue. On my Conestoga Champion engine. How did you hook up the remote start?

Hi Nick, thanks for watching. On the '54 starter solenoid, the small center terminal activates the solenoid by grounding that terminal. So, one connector of the remote start was hooked up to the center terminal on the solenoid, and the other connector of the remote start was hooked up to the positive on the battery (since a '54 is positive ground). If you look at the wiring diagram for your Conestoga, it will tell you whether the solenoid is activated by grounding the small terminal, or by putting power to the small terminal (I'm not sure what year your Conestoga is). Hope this helps!

Actually, the water manifold and it's bolt are not ideal for grounding. Bolt is small, there is a lot of rust. I would find a better spot, such as the generator bracket. If your starter uses three bolts, I would try grounding it to that. Make sure you clean everything
first. You can also use an 8 volt battery. All you will need to do is recalibrate the regulator. No other changes needed.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, a ground directly to the starter is always good. As explained in the video, the ground cable goes from the battery to the stock location on the water manifold bolt, then another cable was attached to the same place and jumpers to one of the starter bolts.
