1962 GT Hawk Off the Rotisserie and Back On the Ground!
มุมมอง 2639 หลายเดือนก่อน
This 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk, which has been off the road since at least the mid-1980s, is finally off the rotisserie and back on the ground! This is a low mileage California car that came to North Carolina sometimes in the 1980s, and I've had it since around 1986. It's been worked on in dribs and drabs since then, but stored carefully when it slumbered. In this video, we are getting the car of...

      Thanks for watching the video, and for commenting! What model Studebaker do you have? You are the Fredrick Winterburn that builds CDI system, right? I came across your site when I was searching for 6v CDI systems for possible use on my '54 Studebaker 4-door sedan that has a '64 259 transplanted into it, but is still 6v. Not many 6 volt CDI systems out there. I don't care for Pertronix systems because all they do is replace the points -- I've never had problems with points. This is a good reminder that I need to get back on the CDI project. Anyway,, thank you for watching!

    I remember back in the early '80's my dad and me were at the local K-mart store. One of the owners of the original Studebaker dealership in my hometown had a 1962 Gran Turismo Hawk. I asked dad if that was a new car, to which he replied, "No. That car is 20 years old." It looked that modern. Studebaker was way ahead of their time in styling. I think that 289 was a Studebaker engine. In December, 1963 the foundry that cast engine blocks was shut down in South Bend, Indiana. After that, Studebaker had to source engines from McKinnon Industries that was based on the small-block 283 Chevrolet engine. IIRC, Studebaker used Borg-Warner transmissions and went to Checker Motors that manufactured the Marathon and Taxicab to help with an adapter because they had just converted to the Chevrolet engine/Borg-Warner transmission combo. Engine sounds good. GREAT VIDEO!

      Thanks for the kind words! And thanks for the great story. Yes, you are right on about the bellhousing that Studebaker used to attach the McKinnon engine to the BW tranny -- it was the same as Checker's. Not sure if Studebaker actually bought them from Checker, or went to Checker's supplier. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!

    Hi great video series, I have a question for you. I am finishing rebuilding my 259 and I have a leaky rear main with a new seal installed. I am thinking it's leaking because it was a bit loose like yours was at the 2:00 minute mark of your video. I like the idea putting a bit of sealant inside the groove when installing the seal. I can see that working when installing the seal on the cap, but how do you think it would work installing the upper portion under the crank where I would need to slide the seal in cause the crank is installed? If I put sealant in the seal I would worry it would all get pushed out from the portion of the block it sits on as I push it around the crank. Thoughts? I pulled the engine to do this work. I found it much easier to do it on the stand than doing it under the car. I followed your video on pulling the motor out of the Daytona. It worked great! Steve

    When you get to the front, how much of a relief do you think will be enough to allow access to the accelerator linkage rubber boot? Also, will you stop at the carpet line or extend onto firewall?

    • @r1lark
      @r1lark 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for watching! As far as the accelerator linkage boot, I don't think that should be much of a problem, since this sound deadener is not too thick. Would think that leaving about 1/4" around the edge of the boot hole without the kilmat material should work. As far as where to stop in the front, I put sound deadener on the firewall before installing the firewall panel/insulation, so I'll just run the kilmat up to that.

    Had a couple old long standard screw drivers when I was younger, took the handles off so I could use a drill. One I put a sleeve over so wouldn't walk off the pimp. Still use them and was cheaper then paying $120 back in the day. Think they are down to $35-$50 now but still kinda much for a rod with a flat end.

    I just rebuilt a flight o matic for my lark. It seemed like a well built trans and luckily no hard parts were broken. I’m excited to see how it drives because I’ve never drove one.

    • @r1lark
      @r1lark 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! The Flight-O-Matics are good transmissions, but are quite different from 'todays' auto transmissions. They start out in 2nd gear (except for some early FOMs and some six cylinder FOMs) unless you either pull the lever down into low when starting out (then move it back to Drive when you want to go to 2nd), or unless you floor the accelerator pedal for a 'jackrabbit' start. 🙂 Yes, they are reliable transmissions, and fairly strong. Personally, I'm a 'manual with overdrive' guy, but this is such a solid low mileage car I didn't want to change it to manual. Good luck on yours!

    • @r1lark
      @r1lark 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi StreetFreak, thanks for watching and commenting! Do a search on "semi-tubular rivets", you should get a good number of hits. I have gotten them from this company in the past: www.rivetsonline.com/rivets/semi-tubular-rivets You can also try the same search on Amazon, but sometimes those items don't have a lot of the different sizes and head shapes. Just be careful, if they say tubular rivet they are probably for leather work; the rivets used in the vent window assemblies were pretty much always semi-tubular rivets. Good luck on your restoration!

    Engine is in the car. Why is it that few, if any, show the installed engine and attempting to install the worst gasket...thick square one going in the trough. On the bench and upside down your shot is worthless. As is that description for not showing "how" you wedged the gasket in to place or tap in to place. My search was to find "someone" that could identify their trick. You did not so pointless wasting further time. That plus 90% stated to NOT put sealant on the side gaskets on top of the casting. Yet you did. Some say to just use grease that is my attempt and more than likely it'll leak big time. Who knows but again...the hardest gasket to install you skipped over. Arghh

    • @r1lark
      @r1lark ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I don't do Studebaker oil pan removal/replacement in the car; many do, maybe they have made a video. (I'll be looking for your video of how to do this with the engine in the car. 🙂) As for getting the thick square gasket in, just keep working at it. The current gasket sets don't seem to have quite the correct dimensions on this gasket, especially when compared to original Studebaker gaskets. That's why I had to turn it 90 degrees and re-angle the ends. Then it's just working it down into the groove. The Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket helps getting it in -- sort of lubricates it. As for the 90% that say not to use sealant on the side gaskets.........your car, your choice of how you do the side gaskets. I showed how I do them, but everyone has their own pet method.

    I had a 61 Buick 364 that wouldn't crank after a hot soak. The solenoid was mounted on too so that it was right near the exhaust manifold. Replacing the starter didn't help, so I tried an earlier year starter that had the solenoid mounted on the bottom side instead. Problem solved.

  • @michaelbenardo5695
    @michaelbenardo5695 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, the water manifold and it's bolt are not ideal for grounding. Bolt is small, there is a lot of rust. I would find a better spot, such as the generator bracket. If your starter uses three bolts, I would try grounding it to that. Make sure you clean everything first. You can also use an 8 volt battery. All you will need to do is recalibrate the regulator. No other changes needed.

    • @r1lark
      @r1lark ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, a ground directly to the starter is always good. As explained in the video, the ground cable goes from the battery to the stock location on the water manifold bolt, then another cable was attached to the same place and jumpers to one of the starter bolts.

    This is about how to remove and install crank gear, not adjusting or measuring endplay. To do that, take off gear, put a c clamp on crank counter weiight or push on rear of crank so it is forward against front main bearing. Put a known to be straight edge like machinist square against the front of the front main bearing thrust surface and use feeler gages between straight edge and crank shim surface. Typically .005". Then add .003" or .004" to that.

    • @r1lark
      @r1lark ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually this video does show how to adjust the end play by pulling the crank gear and changing shims. The crank endplay had already been measured in the previous video -- see "Studebaker Rescue Video #19 - Crankshaft End Play Check". Thanks for watching.

    Nice videos. Which shop manual do you use, where to get one?

      Hi, thanks for watching and the kind words! I used a Studebaker Avanti shop manual, but the 1959-1964 'regular' car shop manual has the same information. Here is a link to the Avanti Shop Manual: www.parts123.com/parts123/dyndetail.pta?catalog=0001003a&uKeY=AAACE

      Hi, thanks. The book is fairly expensive, also shipment to Europe. Is it more detailed than 1bad6t.com/pdf/t-10.pdf? Thanks for a quick feedback, Udo

    What is the measurement from the rear of the speedo gear to the end of the output shaft? Also, that is the new speedo gear tooth count? I have to replace mine to the correct count to match my new 17 tooth for the speedo drive “bullet” for the cable. Thank you.

      Hi Larry, I know it's been a while, but my video camera is broke. And I have been shocked at the prices for new ones. Was hoping to get one that smooths out the video when the camera person (me) doesn't film very smoothly. Looking at the GoPro9 but it's pricey, plus it gets hot and shuts down unless it's in a area with good air movement (or mounted on a car or boat or bicycle, etc).

    So happy I didnt have rear gasket to tight like yours. Im installing my new gasket with oil pan hanging down on exhaust just enough room for me to clean properly.. Thank u for your help on this job.

      Hi Joseph! You have my sympathies 🙂, that is a really hard job replacing the oil pan gaskets working under the car! The thing I've learned about replacing pan gaskets is don't get into a hurry, even if something doesn't go right. I know that's hard to do, and I have to tell myself that on every one I replace.

      @@r1lark the hardest part was keeping the front gasket set . It tookna second set of hands to do the final adjustments. I'll keep on my way now. Loving the Studebaker 1964 Champ with 259 w4 spd overdrive..

    I really like the front crank seal modification. I’m going to try to contact Ingvar Vik this week to see if they still perform that service.

      Rob, the last time I contacted him (a couple of months ago) he was still doing them. I have several that need to be sent to him also.

      I found his email in the Turning Wheels studebaker magazine and emailed him a couple weeks ago and haven’t received a reply. I contacted the phone numbers listed but they say that they are disconnected. Do you know any other way I could get in contact with him?

      Hi Rob, here is the last email that I used to contact Ingvar: ijvik@q.com Is this the same one you used? Sorry it took me so long to reply, I just saw your reply.
