  • Splitting your beehives for the first time can be a bit intimidating. Follow along with me as I complete my first splits using the Reverse Doolittle Method. Is it really as terrifying as it seems?
Methods for splitting hives are as varied as anything in beekeeping. Some depend on having a place to take your hives post-split so that the foragers don't all return to the parent hive and leave your split weak and defenseless.
What options do we have for same-yard splits if we don't have an out-yard? The Reverse Doolittle method seems the like a good option. Let's see how it goes.

I'm also a newbee and it is scary doing splits but let's do this.

I think any responsible keeper is nervous the first few times - wanting to do things right for the benefit of the bees & to avoid losses. You’ve got this!

Everyone has different practices. If you’re not in a residential area, and if you’re not focused on excess honey production, I don’t have issue with your approach. I will say, however, that after the first time around, doing splits isn’t very hard or labor intensive. It’s just the nerves of doing it the first time and learning the initial tactic.
