  • A new job posting from Daybreak games has caused a tremendous stir around the potential for a new Everquest MMO. And there actually might be some substance here. There's a lot of smoke and where there's smoke there's fire.
    Could this be we're finally getting Everquest 3? Ever since Everquest Next was cancelled I've been waiting for something just like this.

      for me it's the same. The problem is devs apparently don't understand why it is and they probably won't remake this feeling again. I was recently checking EQ to see what characters I created over the years and the game is completly different. When I was starting the game for example, for me and my friend one of the most important skills in almost every character was to have forage, so we have food and water and other stuff. Today? It's probably completly useless and irrelevant skill. And that's bad. There is way more stuff like that - completly different soloing techniques for mage/necro/druid (aoe)/bard/chanter and wizard anyone? Gone.

      @@tutkarz I tried to log in and game couldn't find me, which was depressing as a I had a 50 wizard and 50 monk I played in the 90's. Parked both of them in the tunnel and logged out. @@robertbritz257 I also would like to try out EQ3, what I said is that I doubt it will reintroduce that EQ feeling because there is too much emphasis on questing in all mmo games. Sure, there could be quests but dynamic and/or repeatable so player can stay in one zone of choosing for long time. Not story telling so you just traveling from one to another like in wow.

    • @robertbritz257
      @robertbritz257 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see both sides of the coin, some want to get directly into boss fights and some want to quest. Yeah the collect 10 beatles or 10 worms is sometimes boring, but quests are the heart of all MMO's, look at D4 not a true MMO like EQ, but lots of quests, but if you just followed the storyline you could bypass the 300+ side quests. Personally I love quests, in EQ2 I was in the top 5 for quests completed, same for RIFT. But that's not for everybody. I just want to enjoy the MMO it being EQ3 or whatever the next true MMO is. Questing after work, and boss fights on the weekends.

    • @tutkarz
      @tutkarz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertbritz257 I know there will be quests. But quests should be totally optional and not required. They should not block any content. Basically all mmos force you to do quests and leave no other options. And that's why I don't play them.

The lore, worldbuilding, and frankly just some of the memories from '99 are pretty central to how I view fantasy content in general across every genre. EG7 has also acquired Piranha Games, who is the current maker of MechWarrior games, and MW5 has only gotten better since their acquisition began.

    Before anyone starts working on EQ3. They should play a MUD, circa the 1990's; alot.
    The spirit of Everquest is to overcome adversity through teamwork, through sheer determination, or alone, through sheer determination. Yes, that often means players don't get what they think they need but they think they need it and that matters; alot. Though, it wouldn't hurt to be extra generous from time to time.

    Please for the love of god I hope this isn't copium, or hopeium. I do agree with you here, I just hope whatever they are working on is a bit further along than just the idea phase of development because having Darkpaw releasing something roughly the same time that Pantheon comes out, to shake up the MMO scene a little by pitting 2 similarly designed games against each other could be exactly what the genre desperately needs. And right now would be the perfect time to do it, as pretty much everything available is really stale, and most newer MMO's are going back to their roots currently since modern style does not have the staying power. I can tell you exactly why that is too, there is just no sense of achievement in current MMO's. When you do something cool or get a new piece of gear, it just means nothing since it is so underwhelming in the overall aspect of the gameplay loops that are available right now. Look at Everquest or WoW classic or OSRS for example, time invested vs dopamine granted is much much higher in these two titles, nowadays its just boost to max in a few hours or heck even pay to boost to max then just roll your face across the keyboard for a few weeks and boom you are BiS, nothing you do in modern games matters. This is exactly what ruins the games for me, no friends made, no connection with the game world, you just run in circles and jump around in the main cities while you wait for dungeon finder to pop because you have no incentive to actually go out and do anything interesting, and going out on it's own merit isn't even interesting, and this is exactly why nothing currently can hold my attention other than Everquest P99, WoW classic, or OSRS. Anyways I am rambling at this point, and you may or may not agree with me on any of this stuff, or you very well might, I would be interested though to hear your opinions on my thoughts. Nice video :)

      The only thing I'd caution is not knowing, even if it is Everquest 3, what it will be like. I mean, they don't even know yet! Not quite but I'd like something similar. EQ1 you would literally camp a spawn for endless hours to level or for drops. It would be hard pressed to keep that same theme up but also creating instances would be problematic as well. I don't see that many being able to camp the same spawn of monsters for hours on end as in the old days. It would lose a huge chunk of the potential playerbase.

    If they can implement a current engine, new quests, familiar characters, more user friendly (imho, EQ2 is unnecessarily complicated), improved fight mechanics, improved A.I., improved animations, etc. However, I am very skeptical of an EQ3 because it's been talked about for years and nothing ever happened. However, if I were Daybreak, I would be thinking of the future instead of releasing xpacs for the same old tired engine. That being said, the best thing about playing an MMO like EQ/EQ2 are the friendships you develop over the years and comradery during guild events.

    UE5's multi-user approach is a godsend for development. ESO was HUGE compared to many MMOs out, and thats because the Hero Engine allows unlimited users to all build a game world at the same time. It was the ONLY engine with that feature. Ive said time and time again such a feature would double the speed of workflow. So the 7 years it took to develop ESO would correlate to 14 years on other engines. Due to only one user capable of editing the main game file at a time. UE5 now allows that same multi-user approach. So its the go-to engine now. I know people cry "the ue5 look/aesthetic" but that's because many indie devs buy assets off the asset store and use them. So many games look similar. An actual dev studio like daybreak/darkpaw would in essence make their own art/models and NOT have "the UE look"....

It's definitely an IP that has potential for growth but I fear they may make so many compromises to cast their net wide that they would end up pleasing nobody.

    I don't have any hopes for EQ3 or any other mmo because people (including devs) don't even know why people keep returning to old EQ. Not because of quests - all other mmos have this - but because oryginal EQ was a sandbox game, where players had plenty of tools so they could decide what will they do. Which path will they follow. So many things were killed in EQ over the years and not replicated in other games. Like soloing with different classes and styles (aoe soloing, charm kiting, root dotting, fear kiting) - it was fantastic experience and now it's gone. Twinking and power leveling again, fantastic way to revisit old dungeons with new alts. Was very fun to do, so it was nerfed or removed. You can't play like you want. Instead they implemented crap quests like other games, that give you plenty of things, including levels for free. So you don't need to power level alts anymore - killing all the fun. They would have to not only bring back sandbox experience and allo w players to decide what's fun for them, but they would have to make it good. And I doubt anyone will ever do this again.

    Not sure how much I trust Daybreak to build a new EQ game from the ground up. Especially considering their most recent TLP server with that FTE garbage. This is also putting the TLP servers into a different light for me. Have the TLP servers been experiments to gather data for this new EQ game? Maybe they are like feature trial balloons to seen what EQ fans would like or put up with and what they wouldn't. Who knows. Having said all that I would lean towards them doing a re-imagining of EQ1 rather than an EQ3. Like I said I don't trust them to make a new iteration of EQ that fans would appreciate because that would be hard. However, using EQ1 as a blueprint of what works and just modernizing it would be far easier. That would be my guess.

      @@Joshthegamer8600 It's irrelevant if you liked it IMO. FTE "works fine" in all modern MMOs since EQ released and most modern MMOs are trash. If you change all the things that make EQ a distinct MMO it remains EQ in name only. I know EQ is not without flaws but I prefer the original flaws that keep the spirit of EQ intact over the sad modern day MMO experience without those flaws. Trains in EQ were a "flaw" but how the community dealt with them is part of what established the community that EQ has and other MMOs lack.
      Do you really want EQ to be a sterilized, homogenized MMO experience that is exactly like every other MMO where you always know exactly what to expect and everything is on rails and safe and there is no established community built around player action? I don't.
