    Great review. I have owned one for over 3 years, and I can tell you, that this thing will never be the same as a hand held string trimmer. So if you are buying it with those intentions in mind, you will be sourly be disappointed. That being said, I have a bad back, and even though it is slow going, I use it to mow my fence lines, and around my septic tanks. Tim and Christy was correct to point out the issues with the handle, I had some issues with the reaching to put it up and down, and also with it wanting to slope to for down, when I am on a hill incline. To deal with that, I bought a small actuator off of amazon, and put it on, to allow me to adjust the pitch electrically. It is pricey, but for my needs, it works really well, otherwise most of the trimming would not get done.

      It's a "NO" for me! Don't think speed, or expense, or the frustration, think about the carbon footprint. Twice the size of Paul Bunyan!! Like running your single wedge splitter with a 100 HP tractor!! Trimming over my 'walker' is slow, but when I move it, I'm only wasting the little bitty weedeater motor, at idle! And I think I'm doing a better job!

    I’ve always wanted to do this on the side of my mower deck, just weld something on with a weedeater head and put a pulley on top. Are used to live by lake and on both sides of my property I had a drainage ditch and couldn’t get the wheels to close where they would sink and in the front by the road there was a ditch also and then weeds and cats tails around the water I tried to keep cut down. I wouldn’t need to use it next to buildings or anything so I was going to use chain for the string but the deck couldn’t quite get out over the ditch and I couldn’t get close to the side dishes when there was water running which was about three months a year.
    I love the way that retracts with the handle. That’s pretty awesome.

    I just ordered one! Let me tell you why: My dad is a paraplegic (no use of his legs) and is fully bound to a wheelchair. One of his favorite things to do is get on his zero-turn mower and cut the grass. Trimming, however, is a struggle. Trying to navigate uneven terrain while sitting in a chair and wielding a string trimmer is incredibly challenging. Even if this attachment can’t get every corner, it’ll get the lions share of the work done from the seat of the mower. This is the best solution I have ever seen to the problem we’ve been trying figure out for the last twenty years. Thank you for showing this one off today.

Not a product I would invest in. Would probably be better mounted on a front deck like Ventrac or the grasshopper. Nope not me.

  • @smoothlandin
    @smoothlandin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Pretty cool, thank you Tim, love your videos.
    When you outline the lawn before you mow the main lawn, you could easily spend an extra minute trimming with this attachment. Even if it saves some of the trimming for you or a guy, I think it's a great idea. This season our trimmers will be on racks on each mower so as to trim near where we're mowing, instead of relying on a dedicated trimmer guy to do all the work, especially when we're acres away from the truck.
    Mounting off the deck doesnt make logical sense to me, who has thousands of hours on a zero turn. What if the trimmer was mounted at a 45* angle off of, or over the front wheel instead of the deck? Then you could easily get it in tight spots, but still trim a fence line as you mow.

    Tim and Christie, happy Easter to both of you. The Peco deck mount weed eater has been out for years. I've got one in my equipment shed up on a shelf. I was a commercial property maintenance guy. I found it too slow, and not really built that well. One thing do NOT use it around a house with vinyl siding. Like all weed eaters it'll shred the vinyl. To Ron Doyle (next comment down) it's useless on a fence line, you have to crawl with it. Try the DR fence mowers. I have one I don't remember who makes it but it's called a "Post Master" Just for fence lines and around trees it's good, but you still have to go slow, but not as slow as the Peco unit.

    It makes my cordless, 20V DeWalt trimmer look fast and efficient. In addition to not being able to get into inside corners, I also trim areas that are too steep for a mower or too narrow to get the mover into. I understand that it has its place for those who cannot physically handle a standard string trimmer, this could be just the ticket. Otherwise, my bet is that the novelty wears off for most people. And, don't laugh at me for my choice of trimmers. I got tired of the hassles of maintaining a two cycle trimmer for infrequent use and already use the 20V DeWalt battery platform.

Looks good to use on fields for under fence lines and I also do a lot of medians for the city so this could help knock down labor for trimming around the trees and to trim the tops of the curbs as well. But Does it turn vertical to do edging along the curb ? If it does that it's a winner winner chicken dinner. I'll bite for 400 lol why pay a 3 man crew when i can do it all my self lol . I work for a municipality in northwest ohio. In the late 1990 we bought a Steiner 430 and the salesman who sold it to us designed one of these deck trimmers. As a professional I will want my Stihl RX111 trimmer over this attachment. 1. To much risk of damaging a customers vinyl siding, tree bark, and other soft targets. 2. A hand trimmer gives more versatility with slopes, wet areas that a mower can’t hit. 3. I can probably out preform this machine with better precision.
    This attachment could work well for certain tasks but just seems more limited than a hand trimmer.

In my case, I have 10 acres of straight fence lines on flat ground in Florida where if you don't mow weekly it looks like the set of Jurassic Park. Is it pricey? Yes. Interesting, but the reality is it's about a $12-$13K string trimmer with the obligatory commercial zero turn included... You also cannot edge sidewalks, curbs, mulched planting beds, etc. with it as it only operates parallel to the ground. In today's world we also cannot discount the cost of the fuel to run the zero turn as compared to say a 2-stroke or battery powered trimmer. It may be justifiable for long fence rows and use around guard rails and relatively large buildings but for anything else a handheld would likely be a lot faster and less frustrating! I'm using TQ on the Spencer Lawn Care channel as a point of reference here!

    I had this idea years ago, but my idea was to attach the trimmer to the front corner of the deck, not stick way out to the side like this one. My idea was that the trimmer would overlap with the outer edge of the deck, and could be turned on when mowing close to a building, tree, or other obstacle and not leave the little strip that you would have to remove with your regular string trimmer later. This one is useless IMO. You are putting a lot of wear & tear on a $8k zero turn to do what you could do faster with a regular trimmer. I'd bet once the novelty wears off, you'll stop using this.

    that attachment is only good for fence lines, that's all it does successfully. it will work for the disabled and elderly but it takes 15 times longer to get done and takes the reflexes of a cat to accomplish. after all it was designed only for fence lines, other wise there would be a control arm you operate to move this about properly just like the control arms to operate a zero turn properly.

    @Miniscapes515 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seems rather slow. I could walk that fence line in the time it took to do a few inches with that. And your not able to get in the corners well. Seems like your still going to end up with a shaft trimmer in your hands.
    Maybe if you have a handicap or something..

  • @billw.3557
    @billw.3557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Time consuming. Not efficient. Also manuevering issues which can potentially cause the mover to hit the wall and etc...

  • @gckshea
    @gckshea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That would only be efficient if you string trim while you mow. Otherwise a 35hp weed trimmer doesn't make sense.

    And to solve the problem with the reach for Christie why don’t you just put a small rope around the handle somehow and she can pull it from where she sitting I think that’ll work for her what do you think??

  • @michaelwillcutt2619

    Its slower than walking, that slow motion type of steering to adjust weedeater is bad for the hydraulic on zero turn

    Or you could get a grasshopper with mower up front, much better trimming machine than mid mount zero turn.

    Happy Easter to you and your family. I’ll stick with my Stihl FS 110 for now. Just got JD Z730M two days ago and it was my first time driving a zero turn. Naaah, I’ll stick with weed eating for now. Maybe next year, this would be a viable attachment. I would rip it off the mower now🤣

  • @szki272
    @szki272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As others have said having it further forward would be better. I would even go as far as mounting a plate to the deck to put it as close to the front tire as possible. I would also put a remote on off switch. Then replace the handle with a cheap linear actuator.

  • @JimFinlayson

    Once you mow with the zero turn, you’ll never go back. Get ready for ZZero Turn Time with Tim. I’m easily 2mph slower than your Dixie Chopper, but I fly on my zero turn. Saves an hour per week easily.

  • @JimFinlayson
    @JimFinlayson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Intriguing, but $465 before (maybe after) discount, is a bit too steep. Would buy at $200, but I’ll keep walking the yard with the Stihl FS90R in the meantime. Christy > Tim on zero turn skill right now 😀

    I could definitely see the advantage to this for an older person who can't walk as long or a homeowner who just dosen't want to walk, but for a lawn care service, it seems a little slow. I think I'll be sticking with a traditional weed eater.

    • @firstname6208
      @firstname6208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ii believe it would work better on a stander mower. I have made a bracket to hang my trimmer on a bungie and steer the weed eater as i drive the mower, mostly for long fence lines. Around buildings i still walk.

    I wonder if the one sided weight on the mower deck is going to affect how well the machine will cut? I wonder if the deck will be out of level.

    • @unclealansyard5176
      @unclealansyard5176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It shouldn't be a issue. Most mowers have wheels on the decks. Only time I think it would play into it was on slopes where you can get un even cuts. But I'm not sure how much it weights but I don't think it will do anything that much as long the deck has wheels

    tim, you need a big lawn roller 60" might do it. one with 1/4" or 1/2" steel drum just to fix your trash truck issues and smooth out your lawn so it isn't so rough and help keep the voles moles and gophers out. also so you can get some class 3 rail road type ballast for your drive way and lock all that rock into place.

    It is hard to tell, but is the trimmer on an arm that swivels back and forth? If it is, add a wheel and set the distance so the string is right at the fence so the trimmer will follow the contour of the fence line.

    This is a neat concept! One improvement i would like to see is maybe they could make it telescope out or make bolt on extentions where you could boom it out several feet to get around a pond with out getting the mower stuck.

    Happy Easter! As a professional landscaper who did lawn maintenance I've always wanted one on like this. Only thing I would think would be mounting on the front corner for better reach and faster use. For big properties I can see this being very useful. But for landscape crews that trying to get houses done in a timely manner, it still might be faster to do it the regular way. But for large properties like yours, large commercial accounts farms, etc . But I'm very glad some came up with it

    • @robertbunch8362
      @robertbunch8362 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same thought as you about mounting it on a front corner so it could be inserted into inside corners. The handle access issue could be solved using an actuator, like Glen did. Or, maybe a simple cable control.

    Looks pretty cool but even if you are an expert on a zero-turn it's not very practical, only cutting on a horizontal plane, single depth height when trimming, corners and tight space issues, non esthetic finish, short limit cut time, etc.
