- Following the sad news of John's passing, we're taking a look at him back in 2001 with Iris DeMent.

John Prine once said at a concert that he always played the guitar wrong. But he observed that if you keep playing it wrong the same way it becomes a style. I saw him live dozens of times. Every performance was fresh and new. He was a very special man.
BB King said the same thing. And Joni Mitchell’s open tuning and innovative phrasing was due to her weak left hand, the result of polio.

A man with a great big brain directly attached to a great big heart. I'm 71 and John's music has been with me through all my adult life. My heart is a little broken today.
Johns words are painted all over my soul.

Their voices go together amazingly well. John Prine was a national treasure. I'm a huge fan of Iris DeMent as well.
I'm so sad today.
John Prine was my poet. I used his verse, to look so clever, not many were familiar, with his lyrics, so I could get away with it.
I first encountered his music in college in 1976 at club outside the campus, of University of South Alabama. That weekend I bought Sweet Revenge, on vinyl. I was hooked. No one I had ever heard wrote songs like this. He can make you think, he can make you laugh, and then cry. He made me just goof over his verses.
My mothers maiden name was Prine. I don't know that we were actually related, but we claim him as family.
John Prines music was more than just clever tunes. They were poetry of a very high order. He was the first song writer invited by the poet lauereate of the United States to read and play his poetry for the Library of Congress.
I have listened to Johns music today and laughed and wept. I see him shaking Gods hand, then smoking a cigarette nine miles long.
God Bless you John. Your family knows how phenomenally loved you are. Rest In Peace John Prine.

John Prine helped me get through some of my hardest times......
He made me laugh and he made me cry......
His take on life was a beautiful blend of joy and sorrow that challenged me to accept life as it is and not take myself so goddam seriously. I love him for that!
By now, I'm sure John is more than "half-way to heaven with paradise waiting"......

You got to have a lot of balls and personal commitment to do your art the way you believe you want to do your art. This is John's interpretation of music it is unique to him. There is a simplicity and honesty to it that makes it so charming. He is whimsical and childlike,- almost like listening to your favorite cartoon. Emotionally my response is that it makes me feel good. Music that makes you feel good- that's good music. I like John Prine because he didn't sell out. He cashed in.
John didn't write the average genre of somebody else's idea of cool.
Mr. Prine had his own style.

What's funny is that what really got me into John Prine's music was the song "Jesus, The Missing Years". It's supposed to be a funny song, but the first time I heard it, I cried real tears. I guess, in a very real sense, I used to reside down the block inside of 23 Skidoo.
He was born and raised in the post WWII era (boomers 1946-1964) - it was a good time to be alive and it produced nearly all artists of the '60's, '70's, & 80's (Gen X arrived in 1980s music).
A lot of people want to knock Baby-boomers but forget all the old Rock-n-roll they love listening to and are inspired by.
Fil, you always do a superb job. I drive 3500 miles a week. I listen to you for miles and miles. Now that the rest of the world has joined us truckers in self isolation, maybe more people will discover you & all you do.

John Prine came through my uncle's office to buy advertising. He left his first album with my uncle. My uncle gave me the album that was marked promotional "not for sale." I put it on the turntable and I listening to it three times. The music was good. The content was good. I didn't expect it to sell. Fortunately for us John hung in there he lived long enough for him to mature as an artist and for the audience to appreciate and accept him. John was an underdog. He was definitely not top 40. He didn't fall into the regular programming format of the day. Radio stations were based on TSL- time spent listening. That's how radio stations achieved their ratings in 15 second intervals. Fortunately at the time people were switching from AM to FM radio. John Prine grows on you. Yes there is a lot of CG CG CG- well that's country music.

John's empathy and wit were without equal. Imagine a 22/23 year old John writing songs like Angel from Montgomery, Sam Stone, and Hello In There. He could write from the perspective of so many different people, but still make it very personal. Absolutely stunning.
My condolences and hats of the Jason Wilber and Dave Jakes for being a loyal band mates.
My heart is shattered by this loss. He was such a kind, humble, generous man with a beautiful soul. "That's How Every Empire Falls", "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven", and "Angel From Montgomery" are three of my favorites (among many!) of John's songs. Rest well mo cara 💔

His first appearance was at an amateur open mic night and he sang two songs he had written...Angel From Montgomery and Hello in There. How about that for a guy in his early 20's? It just got better for five decades. A wonderful, kind man as well. RIP John. Thanks, Fil
At that open mike night at his regular pub, John got up on a dare from the bartender. He played "Sam Stone", "Hello In There" and "Paradise". As John used to say, they were the only three songs he had. When he finished, folks at the bar reacted with stunned silence (they knew him but had no idea of his talent). John figured he must have been awful.
I'm sorry J but he did 3 songs that night and Angel from Montgomery wasn't one of them. Sam Stone, Paridise and Hello in there

So sad. He died yesterday--we were celebrating my mother's 90th birthday, the big celebration of which we had to cancel. All I can say about the current situation the world finds us in is a quote from the Doors--strange days have found us.

I LOVE IRIS DEMENT. This is not a favorite song of mine, but this is clearly a video of two originals who compliment one another, loved each other a great deal, and loved performing with each other. Please do some songs with just Iris!

John's songwriting was so amazing. Filled with empathy, humor & insight on the human condition and backed-up by beautiful arrangements and wonderful playing. I saw him many times over the years going all the way back to the early 1970's. Always a great show that was spiced by his funny banter & stories between songs. He was a good man with a good heart and some major songwriting skills. A long, long time ago I got to spend sometime backstage with him & a bunch of other nuts at The Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin Texas & he had us all in absolute stitches. Broke my heart that he had to go this way...RIP John...

I haven't seen that many live musical performances in my life but I'm glad I got to see John Prine twice in L.A. back in the 1970's. Always one of my favorites John was a great story teller.

Thank you for doing a second analyst at this time of our loo. I went to The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. My friend's father owned several historical bars, she got front row tickets to any show. One day she came in and said "who is John Prime?" I was just recovery from the fact she saw The Boss and was clueless about him. The next day I brought a John Prime CD, oh she said, hmm he is kinda political. She went to the concert and said she loved him. She was about 21.

John was a songwriters songwriter. He wrote from the heart. Songs so real and soulful that every one could relate too. The voice. The music. Lyrically brilliant. Phenomenal storyteller. Boy, I wish I was thinking of the sweet profound ones...I woke up and all day long have had, "Then I got fired for being scared of bees and they only give me fifty cents and hour" playing in my head. I guess a smile is as good as a tear today.

I really appreciate your doing this. I'm in my 50s and have been listening to Mr. Prine since I was 7. He's my favorite songwriter, and it feels like I lost a member of my family. In addition to all of his own wonderful qualities, he consistently kept his buddy Steve Goodman's music alive. I know I should just be grateful that we were blessed to have their music at all, but right now it's just sad.

Good evening Fil, sad times. Its 9:17pm NY Time and I be brief. You seem off your usual optimistic self, I understand totally: first Mr. Bill Withers then , Mr. John Prine whom I never heard of until a 2 months ago you discussed his career and life in your amazing analysis Fil. Thank you. When chance I listen to this gentleman heartfelt deep inspirational lyrics/song and it makes me feel and have those imagery of that story, that journey described. Mr. Prine gives that provincial vibe not duplicitous at all but honest ,real a major lost in charisma and talent.
However, Fil this is our alternative, our parallel universe for now and things will get better , they must. I know you and, like me and most people miss their families and friends in terms of visiting and that contact we can not do period.
But, thank you for these video analysis and live stream in-spite of your own personal challenges now Fil, and trying to stay healthy as well: indeed, we all around the globe are doing the same and suffering the same too. Your the first person I've heard talk about John Prine's guitar skills and emotional playing, respect. I once said to my wife, if John couldn't sing after his cancer treatment, I'd pay to listen to his guitar playing.

I was fortunate to see John Prine in concert every couple of years since the early '70s. Always a good show. As another commenter said, this one hurts, still a year after Prine's death.

Just played the John Prine album (1971). For a young man, the scope of his awareness and empathy are extraordinary. And his ability to articulate that with compassion and humor is astonishing. I can see why his many musician friends talk about his humor and humility with great affection.

Michele, here is to the joy, amusement, and wonder that you are about to discover if you avail yourself of the John Prine catalog. He was unique in his ability to turn a phrase and a master of the ability to express his weird, wacky, and amazing view of the world around him. I almost wish that I could make that journey once again. I would not give up the pure enjoyment that his music has given me these past three decades. "Sam Stone", "Souvenirs", "Paradise", and "Unwed Fathers" are a few songs to get you started. I could have easily listed a couple dozen more and they are not in any order of importance. Everybody has their own favorite John Prine songs. Enjoy the ride!
On a more personal note, 04/07/2020 is the day the musician, the entertainer, and the man died. His music will live on and he will continue to influence all that hear his artistry. Don McLean need not write another ode. Iris Dement, Nancy Griffith, Bonnie Raitt, and hundreds of others will keep the spirit of John Prine alive.

Unique fact about John Prine's picking style. In traditional finger picking it's thumb and three to two fingers, John picking style was thumb and one finger. I think when asked about his "break through picking style" he replied"I just learned it wrong."
I will be forever grieving that John Prine, an american institution, has passed. My heart goes out to family and friends and at the very least he'll be reunited with Steve Goodman.

I had asked last week for you to consider analyzing John Prine sometime, so imagine my delight when I just came across this particular video from a while back. I came to know and love John's music fairly recently, and listened to literally nothing since. I'm not even a big country fan, but Prine is a master of his craft. I'm gutted that, as a Scot, I didn't get to see him perform live in Scotland...and sadly never will. This track is an example of how John can go from songs, like Hello In There, that communicate deep sadness to extremely funny, life affirming songs. Thanks for featuring him, Fil. I've been trying to master his Travis Picking, but still struggling.
Health problems
In early 1998, Prine was diagnosed with squamous-cell cancer on the right side of his neck. He had major surgery to remove a substantial amount of diseased tissue, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy.[46] The surgery removed a piece of his neck and severed a few nerves in his tongue, while the radiation damaged some salivary glands. A year of recuperation and speech therapy were necessary before he could perform again.[47] The operation altered his vocals and added a gravelly tone to his voice.[48]
In 2013, Prine underwent surgery to remove cancer in his left lung. After the surgery, a physical therapist put him through an unusual workout to build stamina; Prine was required to run up and down his house stairs, grab his guitar while still out of breath, and sing two songs. Six months later, he was touring again.
Fil, you're fantastic. So special to give John (and Iris!) time, he was and always will be magical. We lost so many Americana members this last year, Jerry Jeff, John, Tony Joe White, Billy Joe Shaver. Love your appreciation of all music, no borders, and YOUR musical skills! Best wishes.

Peace and Prayers for his family. John was one of a kind. I feel fortunate to see him perform a couple of years ago. The man knew how to touch your soul with his words.
