I was a quite young when i met him with my father around 10 years old, my memory from then is not so good but i remember that night clear as day. I was the youngest person to yell a request. Well he played it then after the show invited My Mom Dad and myself backstage. Talked to me not like i was a child but a peer and with nothing but kindness. Dad got his guitar signed by john and it sits on the wall to this day.
    I miss him.

I'm glad you've been directed to John Prine. This is one of the most devastatingly beautiful and haunting songs that I've ever listened to. I was too young for Viet Nam, but in my brief college stint I hung out with Viet Nam vets my older brother's age, and to a man they would tear up when this song was played. I hope you'll spend a lot of time exploring Prine's catalogue. He has other profoundly beautiful and sad songs, and love songs, and songs that will make you smile or outright laugh out loud while singing along with him. I hope to enjoy watching you get to know him.

John Prine once said of this song, "I hope you hate hearing it as much as I hated writing it." Now that you've seen how John could make us all cry for so many years, you should listen to a much later version of John Prine and his duet with the talented Iris Dement at the 54th Street Sessions. The song is "In Spite of Ourselves" and I guarantee it will make you smile. Be sure and get the 54th Street Sessions because there is a story that goes with the song.

No, the "broken radios" bit was also addiction- the idea that Sam Stone was headed in a downward direction and even when things were good it was only a pause on the path. His radio was broken, and his song was never going to last too long.
John never wrote a single bad song. He's also not always this depressing. To go to the other extreme, try _"Please Don't Bury Me,"_ and in the middle- serious but not enough to slap you with a crying fit of depression- try _"Paradise"_ or _"Hello In There."_

I was introduced to John Prine's music by my ex-husband. We declared "In Spite of Ourselves" to be our song, because it was so funny and fit so well with our personalities. In the end though, "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" became our song, though it was never declared the way the first one was. It just happened. We parted ways, but John Prine will never not remind me of that time in my life.

To me, the broken radio is a metaphor for a broken man, and "sweet songs don't last too long" means the good times are few and far between. "Little pitchers have big ears" is an old saying that means be careful what you say around the children, because the kids hear and understand more than you know. I think the song is sung from the point of view of Sam's children "There's a hole in Daddy's arm..." So this is more than the story of an old soldier in a downward spiral - it's also a story of the collateral damage to his family. Sad as sad can be.

I have been performing John's songs for over 40 years, and I believe in his line about broken radios he was referring to Sam not being able to be the man to his family that he always wanted to be, thus he was the broken radio that could no longer produce the sweet songs he had dreamed of.

I first heard john prine in 1980 or 81 and I've been hooked ever since. This song is one the first three sons he sang at an open mic night at a little club in Chicago. There are so many great songs he has written. "Hello in There" and "Paradise", are the other 2 of that first open mic night, after playing there for awhile he got worried that the people would be tired of the songs so on the way there that night (on a bus I think) he wrote another of his classics, "Souvenirs" which has always moved me and shocked me at how he wrote it on a bus ride. After nearly 50 years, some bouts with cancer he passed in 2020 with Covid. A song that just happens to be the last one he recorded is one you should hear, "I remember everything." Enjoy

There are a lot of colloquialisms in here that I'm not sure if you got or not but you definitely got the idea of it and I'm so glad you got to experience the incredible John Prine. He died a while back but he left us with a ton of fantastic songs.
As far as sweet songs not lasting long on broken radios, I've always just seen that as a metaphor for the whole story, where a local hero comes home but it doesn't take long before it turns into a tragic story given all the shit he had to deal with. Little pitchers have big ears, is an older expression that means children hear a lot more going on in their environment than we think they do. I think the saying originated from the idea that pitchers, especially old-fashioned ones, the handles kind of look like ears.
When you guessed that the grass growing around his brain meant that he basically just kind of group fuzzy and foggy in his thoughts, that's half right but there is a double entendre there and of course grass is slang for weed. So he shot up lots of morphine and smoked a lot of weed.
He has so many brilliant songs. He originally was a mailman with a walking route in Chicago and the rhythm of his feet moving along had him just creating songs in his head all day long. He has written some of the most beautiful and touching songs. Hello in there. It's about old people. Spanish Pipedream is really upbeat and really fun and I've played it countless times in a band that I was in for awhile and it always got the audience dancing and singing along. The list goes on and on. I met him a couple times and he is one of the nicest people and funniest people you will ever meet. He is sweet and endearing and compassionate and brilliant. Or he was. RIP buddy.

Since you like songs that tell a story, you are very lucky to have found John Prine, one of the great American songwriters of any generation. Though his prolific career spanned 50 years, I always hear the same 4-5 songs on all the reaction channels. I recommend a few less frequently played gems: "Far from Me", "Spanish Pipedream", "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness ", "All the Best", "Unwed Fathers", "Summer's End", "Donald and Lydia" and "Long Monday".

I only "found" John after he died from covid. He had survived at least 2 bouts of cancer, one being throat cancer. He thought he'd never sing again, but he proved himself wrong. I'm 67 years old and the song that I heard first was "hello in there" and not ashamed to say I cried.
He has so many great songs with stories. I love Summers end, and angel from montgomery. From his last album, released posthumously, try I remember everything. For a laugh, listen to John with the wonderful Iris de Ment singing in spite of ourselves. Just too many to mention.

I had to subscribe just to give you credit for reacting to John Prine I first saw John Prine and the early seventies Jerry Jeff Walker didn't show up for his death if John had to play the whole night in a small College sitting with his storytelling, guitar in my high school sweetheart I continue to follow his career through his entire life is fighting cancer and making that come back after that you need to check out many phases of his career or maybe even a documentary about him I've seen that somewhere very very enjoyable thanks and I hope you continue down this rabbit hole

Hello Britt....John Prine, in my humble opinion, was the best lyricist......ever. If you listen to everything he wrote over the many years he performed.....I don't think anyone has done better. It will take you a fair amount of time to cover all of his work, but you will be a faithful lover of everything....John Prine. RIP Sweet John RIP

John Prine is all about storytelling. He started as "The Singing Mailman" in suburban Chicago in the mid '70's. "You're Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Any More" still fits American life, sadly. One of my favorites "Grandpa was a Carpenter" will sure make you smile

I know it's already been said, many times I'm sure, here in the comments, but John Prine may have been the greatest storytelling songwriter ever. Him and three or four more who understood making you feel emotion. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny. A charming yarn of yearning for true love, or a sorrowful story of unending heartbreak.

John was lost to covid recently RIP. He had such a way with words, his song writing is hard to match. I suggest listening to Souvenirs. A modern song writer and story teller that I put up there by John would be Jason Isbell. May I suggest listening to Elephant if you want a story that will affect your day. Keep up the great work Brit

John loved Jason and his wife, Amanda Shires. Jason's tune "If We Were Vampires" feels like something John could have written when he was younger. And I definitely think Amanda's song "Wasn't I Paying Attention?" would be a great reaction video - it's dark but plumbs some of the same emotional depths that "Sam Stone" does. Another great tune from John Prine is "Lake Marie" - but his entire catalog is a worth listen.

I first heard Sam Stone in high school in 1972 when my teacher brought in John's first album… The song we're still named "Great Society Conflict Veteran's Blues" back then... The line 'there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes' really stuck with me because I knew a few people like that at the time

Nice reaction Britt to the one and only John Prine. If you want to see his other side (his humor) try :"IN Spite of Ourselves" or ANY other of his songs. I can tell you he never wrote a bad song and lots of people will attest to that. I cried like a baby when he passed. Such a beautiful soul and a decent person. R.I.P. John.

My father came back from the South Pacific after WWII with what they called back then Battle Fatigue. (PTSD) He suffered from it the rest of his short life. He died at 41 from cancer. I know the feeling of being a kid at school when the other kids recognize the clothes you're wearing as the old ones their parents donated to the church. I still loved him though. He couldn't help it. The last thing he told my Mom was to never let me or my brother go in the service. I went to jail for refusing to go to Viet Nam and I'm proud of it.

Now that you've scratched the surface of John Prine you can consider some of his additional songs. "Paradise" was a song that helped start the Ecology and Green movements. "In Spite of Ourselves", sung with Iris DeMent is a song about married life. And "Angel from Montgomery" which was a huge hit for Alison Krauss, and was also covered by the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. You need to check out Tedeschi-Trucks also.
