    *Hey y'all! Hope this video helps you out. While we're on this topic of funk and hip hop grooves, our boy Nate over at The 80/20 Drummer dropped a great video talking about how to fix your feel for hip hop grooves. Link to that video is in my description box. G'awn and check that one out as well!* 🤘🏾

      All us Drumeos that released a video of Broadway Hustle are going “oh man, why did he release this after the deadline?” 😁 I hope my version didn’t make you cringe too hard. 😁 Seriously, I love this lesson! It’s an easy practice trick but it does so much. I’ll incorporate it in my daily routine.

    I also want to say your vid on vic firth was awesome. I used to not care about what sticks i used...I got the impression that Vic were 'better' so I went with them for a long time on principle. When I got older and did away with all that, I found promark to be so much better balanced across many of their models. Just confirms...find a stick you love...try every stick in the shop before you compromise. Im currently using the promark natural series (with the green logo). my kids bought me a pair for my 37th birthday which was very nice. My daughter also bought me 2 guitar picks. How sweet. God bless you Rob

    Love your approach to drumming . And even though I am a percussionist, I'm learning so much from your tutorials. Your long exercises are a fantastic way to groove over a long period, and as you are aware of doing doubles with just your hands is a friggin chore. Ain't no rebound, but your videos are very helpful. Great approach with great chops with a fine sense of humor . Keep it happening, your tutorials are needed.

    Basically add some accent on the “ and “ of every quarter note here and there for funk music add in some variations here and there to create this “ bounce feel “ .. and play in between a straight and a shuffle groove . I call it “ swunk “

    Let me add something here. Honestly - is either you have it or not, and you can acquire it or improve it by listening to good stuff for years. But Rob, you sound funky even in your 'non bouncy' playing. There may be not much swing, but its still there subtly :) . Not your fault...

  • @maffymaffmaff
    @maffymaffmaff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Rob, in your first example, apart from some embellishments, I couldn't hear much of a difference between your 'cross' and your 'tick'. In your 'cross' section you were a little heavier on your quarter notes but that was about it. I actually thought the 'cross' section was reminiscent of a lot of method players like andy gangadeen (incognito) who apply a drum machine loop approach to their playing. Perhaps this track isnt a great example of a straight approach and a swung approach? I could be completely wrong here.

    • @maffymaffmaff
      @maffymaffmaff 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      after having listened back to your track I get what you are trying to say and I get it. However perhaps more of a contrast between straight and swung is needed. I play a heck of a lot of blues shuffles (which bores me a bit although I appreciate it) and have come to really notice the difference between straight, swung and in between feels. I think after a while, the right feel is felt rather than intellectualised. It cant be taught I dont really think? Can it? Isnt it a result of listening and playing and your band mates hammering you? I dont know. Im not a red hot drummer but can hold my own. You are a fantastic educator...ad very refreshing drummer in the age of gospel ch*pa, but reality is like you said, you can swing or straight with quarter notes...listen to the other instruments in the band and get your feel from them especially if they are the arrangers, song writers, bandleaders.
