    Nice job! Looking to get a bioactive set up done for my hognose too. I just wish these exo terras had a door on the side instead of in the front. Kind of ruins the aesthetic for me. With the square tanks my mourning geckos are in, I have the side panels as the front view and it looks so much better.

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Take a look online for Western hognose habitat. It is not very "woodland" like this setup. The snake will do fine in this setup of course, but honestly a very sparse cage with a water bowl is more like hoggie habitat I think. Not all snakes need bioactive. Idk, I think bioactive has its place, but not so sure hognose are the best species for it. Anyway, check out habitat pics and decide for yourself. I have been to W. hognose habitat in Colorado only, and it was sandy/loamy soil, sparse grass, some scattered rocks - that is it. Did not look like a forest floor. One guy's opinion here.

      @@6strings735 I’d get a prairie plants in that enclosure like the false indigo

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No escaping isopods! And in regards to the other commenter - no bio activity is not a must, nor is going for a naturalistic style enclosure. And I certainly could keep it bare and boring, but by providing more inside I am giving Penelope more to do and explore - the more enrichment the better!

    Hog nose snakes have a shovel nose because they burrow so I would highly recommend adding 2-3 more inches of substrate for them to be able to be completely covered if they want to

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I put it in a pinned comment but maybe not - though it might not look it, this was more than enough substrate for her to burry in because shes so small, however I did add more substrate a couple days later since I had to order more. :)

      @@zareptiles thank you for your reply. How often do you have to spray water for plants and to keep the isopods alive. I used to have isopods and lost them when i was out of town as the soil got dried.

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chanhuang614 I spray plants roughly once a week and a trick ive found works great for isopods in more arid environments is sticking moss under the water dish, and overflowing the dish when I fill it. Doing that has also given my snakes a humid spot to go to when they are going into shed. its worked great!

    • @zareptiles

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first attempt flopped lol! But you learn as you go! I have since added more substrate and I found a hack in a fb group that I have started implementing - put a layer of moss under the water dish and then over flow the dish when ever you change the water, this gives a guaranteed damp area for the clean up crew :)

  • @saoriernst
